Plainfield man faces desertion charges (CT)
WTNH Television ^ | 5/8/08 | Puppage

Posted on 05/08/2008 10:12:01 AM PDT by Puppage

Plainfield (WTNH) _ It's called going "AWOL" or absent without leave. A Plainfield man is facing desertion charges, which is a crime punishable by time in a military prison and dishonorable discharge.

Davis Schriener, 20, is behind bars for skipping out on basic training. "Now basically his life is ruined," Michelle Franco, Schriener's mother, said.

Franco says her son came home in March after leaving Fort Knox, Kentucky and after she says he was shown pictures of the realities of war. "He wants to help people. He doesn't want to be in the position of killing people," Franco said.

Schriener was signed up for special forces and wanted a change. When he didn't get it, he left.

Franco says her son had been in touch with his unit early on and was planning on leaving home on Monday to go back to his unit. He just wanted to wait until his basic training class graduated, but that ended up being way too late.

Instead, Plainfield police (armed with a world-wide felony arrest warrant) picked Schriener up as he walked along Prospect Street.

Crystal Thompson lives nearby. "Every 10 to 15 minutes there were cops driving by the past few days," Thompson noted.

Zackary Holden lives in the area too and knows Schriener. And, when asked if he was surprised that Schriener left the army, Holden replied, "Surprised, I thought he was gonna be in there."

Schriener's mother remains proud of her son's short service and his decision. "I'm also proud of him that he doesn't want to be there, it's not the path he wants to go with."

He needed pictures for that? Why did he join the Army, to milk cows & play frisbee?

In the right hands, the military would be about helping people... But if he wanted to help people, why the military and not the Red Cross??

It amazes me that some people think the military is all games and play and when they face reality, they run. He is a coward. One of my grandson’s friends left for the Army yesterday or will leave this week. He was not sure of the date. GS and this friend took military skills in high school and loved it. I won’t be surprised if gs joins up, too.

This seems like a lot of hype.

Unfortunately, lots of trainees fail to graduate Basic Training. I suppose that the difference here is that most simply don’t just walk off post and go home.

Not so fast. All he had to do was NOT volunteer. Nobody made him sign up. He’s an immature little punk and shoulda stayed home with his mommy.

World-wide felony arrest warrant? Is this article even believable?

That's pretty cool. No problems with jurisdiction - but what if he'd managed to get to one of the non-aligned planets, or even out of the Solar system entirely?

Taking the oath at the time of formal enlistment is a commitment that irrevocable.
Like the you said, did he think he enlisted to milk cows & play frisbee?
According to the law, in the time of war, desertion is punishable by death by a firing squad.
Sorry Franco, you voluntarily enlisted and took the oath to defend your country. You reneged. Now you pay the piper.

I agree."World wide"? It's common knowledge that there's not a police agency in the world, outside of the US,that would execute such a warrant.

“This seems like a lot of hype.”

Much ado about nothing. It may be different now but when I was in you had 90 days. It was not advertised but within 90 days of enlistment a recruit could quit at will and there would be no repercussions. “World-wide felony arrest warrant”? BS, they could care less about this kid. Probably grateful he ran off before they spent a bunch of money training him and trusting him with sensitive info.

I have a cousin thinking of joining the Army because (quote) "He does not want to work."

Mrs. WBill told me this. After I had calmed down from laughing so hard, we both decided that he was in for a rude shock.

What possessed this kid to volunteer for Special Forces? Did he think it meant putting on USO shows? I’d bet that this kid never had to take responsibility for anything in his life. NOW he understands what responsibility is.

And, of course, mom is SO proud of her little darling, F’ed up and marked for life. Just try getting a job.

Ah yes, yet another page out of the old Vietnam playbook. When these scum are finally successful in geting American troops out of Muslim countries, will the left blame the resulting death toll on Bush the way they blamed the millions killed after the Vietnam congressional surrender on anticommunists and cold war extremists??

Monty Python covered this very topic:

Colonel: Come in, what do you want?

Private Watkins enters and salutes.

Watkins: I'd like to leave the army please, sir.

Colonel: Good heavens man, why?

Watkins: It's dangerous.

Colonel: What?

Watkins: There are people with guns out there, sir.

Colonel: What?

Watkins: Real guns, sir. Not toy ones, sir. Proper ones, sir. They've all got 'em. All of 'em, sir. And some of 'em have got tanks.

Colonel: Watkins, they are on our side.

Watkins: And grenades, sir. And machine guns, sir. So I'd like to leave, sir, before I get killed, please.

Colonel: Watkins, you've only been in the army a day.

Watkins: I know sir but people get killed, properly dead, sir, no barley cross fingers, sir. A bloke was telling me, if you're in the army and there's a war you have to go and fight.

Colonel: That's true.

Watkins: Well I mean, blimey, I mean if it was a big war somebody could be hurt.

Colonel: Watkins why did you join the army?

Watkins: For the water-skiing and for the travel, sir. And not for the killing, sir. I asked them to put it on my form, sir - no killing.

Colonel: Watkins are you a pacifist?

Watkins: No sir, I'm not a pacifist, sir. I'm a coward.

My son did his basic at Ft. Knox, two in his platoon went AWOL the day BEFORE graduation. And apparently with the help of family members. Never did hear what happened with them.

is behind bars for skipping out on basic training

Failure to assimilate. It ain't for everyone and some don't quite figure it out until they're in Basic. I wouldn't want the pussy to stay in anyway.

Every morning, our Drills would ask "Who doesn't wanna be here?" and they weeded out about 20 guys that just weren't right for the infantry. Some sort of discharge as if they'd never put the uniform on.

....but to go AWOL.....that's just bein' a puss.

Exactly - “I want to serve my country but I will not carry a rifle or kill another human. I wish to enlist as a medic.” We always need medics, so I suspect a recruiter would be more than happy to sign the guy up.

At least one conscientious objector has earned the Medal Of Honor.

Those with religious or philosophical constraints against killing can still volunteer for service as a medic or corpsman.

Attention all Americans:
When joining any of the armed forces you may be called upon to actually have to kill an enemy soldier of another nation.
The enemy wants to fight and die for his country, and it is our duty to help him with that desire.

Schriener was signed up for special forces and wanted a change. When he didn't get it, he left.

First off- I can't believe that the Army is once again recruiting for SF off the street. The ones that made the course were some of the worst soldiers you ever saw. They had no idea, beyond what they were taught in the Q-Course, of what the Army was about.

Secondly- this kid was nothing more than a whining jerk-off. Good riddance. I hope he gets to break some rocks before he goes back to his loser-of-a-civilian life flipping burgers at MickeyD's, but some lib will probably get him off.
