CHICAGO Chicago police say a man died as he tried to shield his four-year-old daughter from an auto allegedly driven by a man under the influence of a controlled substance.
Joseph Richardson was walking his daughter Kaniyah to a McDonald's for burgers late Monday when a car jumped the curb. Police say the 39-year-old Richardson grabbed his daughter just before the car slammed the two into a fence.

An honest to God hero. It looks like heaven has gotten another angel.
There’s one little girl who knows *for sure* that her daddy loves her.
Straight to Valhalla. May Saints and Angels accompany him to the embrace of Our Lord.
Sad and wonderful story.
In this day and age of scum who prey on young kids, fathers who abandon their families, it is nice to know that heroes like this man exist. I’m sorry to say that the only time we hear about them are when things like this happen.
That precious child will treasure the memories of her father forever. God bless that family at this time.
there are good people in all walks of life.
I don’t use the word hero very often, as the standard should be high. But this man has set the standard as far as I’m concerned. God blesses this earth with a special few and I guess he decided it was time to call this one home.
Very well said, MissouriConservative.
Ahhh, what a wonderful dad but how horrible for the little girl. Hope they get the perp or got the perp. I didn’t read further. Too disgusting. He’ll probably walk free though.
It cannot be said any better. Another poster is correct, heaven has a new angel.
Very well said.
Hope they lock the scum that hit them in jail and throw away the key. I am sick and tired of reading about people under the influence driving and causing accidents.
According to the article,
Police say the driver of the car, 32-year-old Angelo Thomas of Chicago, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI. Witnesses say the man was driving erratically before the accident.
High chances the perp was a senior citizen.
I suppose if middle age was like 16, then, sure.
Hi Mom,
Yes, there should be no rehab card allowed in situations like that. And as to the father, that’s the quintessential Dad, hands down Father of the Year. Rest In Peace, Joseph Richardson, and prayers up for your daughter Kaniyah, her brother, and her sister.
TRIED??? He DID shield her. She's still alive and he's not. He deserves full credit for what he DID accomplish.
Says the little girl is in serious condition. Hope she’s OK. She will always be proud of her Dad as we all are. A good man.
Prayers needed for a little girl although you can bet Dad is now in Heaven doing his best too.
As a father of two girls, I can only hope that I strive to fill the large shoes this man has left behind.
This man is what every father should wish to be like and work daily to emulate his life.
RIP.
Prayers up for the hero.
Amen
I cannot find the words between tears...
A true man. A true father. Just tears at me.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. —John 15:13
Prayers for Joseph Richardson, his daughter & family.

Amen.
Wow. What a hero and what a tragedy. What a shame. My prayers are with his family. Just awful. But he saved his baby. He did good.
From the article:
He would rather have killed himself than killed someone else,” said Patricia White, 46, whose daughter is engaged to Thomas. As she talked, tears rolled down her cheeks and stained her green silk blouse. “We’re just praying for the family,” she said.
Right. The guy never had a driver’s license and decided to drink and operate a car. I think in these cases the title owner for the car should also be responsible. If the driver does own the title, then Illinois needs to tighten up its titleing process.
Sad.
