McGovern, former Clinton backer, endorses Obama

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Former Sen. George McGovern, an early supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, urged her to drop out of the Democratic presidential race and endorsed her rival, Barack Obama.

After watching the returns from the North Carolina and Indiana primaries Tuesday night, McGovern said Wednesday it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination. The 1972 Democratic presidential nominee said he had a call in to former President Clinton to tell him of the decision, adding that he remains close friends with the Clintons.

"I will hold them in affection and admiration all of my days," he said of the Clintons.

McGovern's announcement comes a day before Clinton was scheduled to travel to South Dakota to campaign. The state holds its primary June 3 with 15 pledged delegates at stake.

McGovern said he had no regrets about endorsing Hillary Clinton months ago, even before the Iowa caucuses.

"She has run a valiant campaign. And she will remain an influential voice in the American future," he said.

But Obama has won the nomination "by any practical test" and is very close to a majority of the pledged delegates, said McGovern, who is 85. Obama moved within 200 delegates of clinching the nomination with his split decision on Tuesday of a win in North Carolina and a narrow loss in Indiana.

It's time to unite the Democratic Party, he said.

If I were Clinton I would want McGovern to endorse anyone but me.

McGovern? Is that really the symbol the Dems want attached to this race?

Obama won’t have won enough delegates in the primaries to clinch the nomination, either.

I don’t see Hillary withdrawing as long as she has a strategy to get the delegates from Florida and Michigan seated.

The Rush haters on FR must be feeling really good today with more "pressure" on Hilderbeast to drop out so the RAT party can unify behind Obamessiah. Then they can spend all their time and money tearing up Republicans instead of using the ammo against each other.

The Rush haters on FR and their conterparts on DU both feel things would be sooooo much better if we had just "put a stake thur Hillary's heart" months ago and let the mainstream media hand Obama the Dem nomination on a silver platter.

Interesting how these "conservatives" have the same views as the commies on this election. All they'd have to do is add a sentence or two about how Hillary voted for "Bush's war" and their posts would identical to the garbage posted on DU.

And as my tagline notes, does anyone remember when we took the advice of the loudmouths on FR who demanded we "drive a stake through Gary Condit's heart while he's down" because "we CANNOT risk ANY chance this man goes back to Congress". Condit was a huge albatross hanging out the Dems necks and those "conservatives" kept demanding he get destroyed in the RAT primary as soon as possible. They got their wish. The Dems should thank those "conservatives" for endursing "Dem unity" in November to keep that seat in socialist hands forever.

However...plagiarizing myself from earlier:

Obama does not have enough time and is nowhere near adroit enough to rebound from what his poor judgment over ‘reverend’ Wright has cost him.

AND he is still the shallow, populist, intellectual fop with the ill-bred wife who can't open her mouth without alienating ALL the people he needs to be elected.

My money is still on Hillary. She’s staying in because Obama has more skeletons to be exposed.

I hope so but I doubt it. I think she would have used everything she had already to overcome him.

If there's anybody who knows how to run a hard, close campaign it's George “Big Mac” McGovern. Maybe he hopes that BO will erase his ignominious record of winning one state out of 50.

Well, he did manage to win more electoral votes in 1972 than Walter Mondale won in 1984.

Maybe it was because he had a weaker opponent. Maybe it is because Minnesota has fewer electoral votes than Massachusetts. But maybe it is because McGovern is just smarter the Mondale, arguably the most qualified candidate the Democrats have run for president since the disaster of the Carter administration.

GREAT! One loser now endorses someone who has about the same chance as he did.

As RUSH says, never, ever take advice from losers, they are always happy to give but have no success to back them up.

Will Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, John Keerry be next, of course.

People who are tone-deaf always think that they are singing on key and sound great!

I would think that having that far-left, senile old fool, and has been (George McGovern) endorse anyone would be the "kiss of death."

In 1972, McGovern lost by the 2nd biggest landslide in history, carrying only D.C. and Taxachussetts.

I agree it's still possible for Hillary to grab the Democrat nomination now, but with only six states left to go and her behind by over 100 elected delegates and losing more and more superdelegates by the day (I think she only has 10 more superdelegates than Obama now), it's exordinarily difficult.

Basically she can only get the Dem nomination at this point by using thuggery tactics and rigging things behind the scenes. She and Bill will have to get on the phone and strongarm dozens of superdelegates into supporting her by using bribary or blackmail (alot of them owe their jobs to her husband), forcing the party to seat Florida and Michigan delegates and awarding ALL of them to Hillary, contesting races like Guam where Obama only "won" by 7 votes, and using the credentials committee to disqualify a bunch of Obama superdelegates and elected delegates from weird contests like D.C., and refusing to seat them.

All of that would probably turn the tide to Hillary's favor at the convention and allow her to wrestle the nomination from Obama, but it would also have the effect of a nasty, underhanded fight that would tear the democrat party apart and doom any nominee to lose in the fall. (Plus Obama would be able to claim he won the most states and delegates and was the choice of "the people" only to be cheated by unelected party hacks behind closed doors -- a third party run by Obamas "the people's candidate" would have a perfectly legit case)

So in short I'd be quite happy with that scenario.

Also, it will never happen, but the best case scenario would be the Dem party implodes and fails to run a Presidential candidate nationally for the November election, allowing a bunch of us to vote for a conservative candidate over McCain without having to risk electing a communist Democrat. ;-)
