As the fate of a nailbiter Indiana primary -- and possibly the course of the Democratic race -- hung on his city, Gary Mayor Rudy Clay said just now that it might take a while yet to finish counting the vote in Lake County, which includes Gary, and said that his city had turned out so overwhelmingly for Barack Obama that it might just be enough to close the gap with Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"Let me tell you, when all the votes are counted, when Gary comes in, I think you're looking at something for the word to see," Clay, an Obama supporter, said in a telephone interview from Obama's Gary headquarters. "I don't know what the numbers are yet, but Gary has absolutely produced in large numbers for Obama here."
Clay said the results were late coming in from Lake County because of the large numbers of absentee ballots that had to be counted -- about 11,000. Under local practice, all of the cartridges from voting machines in Gary and nearby East Chicago are first collected at the local airport before being driven to the county headquarters to be tallied with the results from the rest of the county, he said. He said there were major technical problems holding up the count.
"It takes a little time. We want to be sure that every vote is counted fair and right," he said. "I just talked to the director out there and they are working like junkyard dogs to get that done as soon as possible. They are taking some time but I told them to do it right. That's what taking the time."

Looks like my worst fears might be confirmed.
Looks like the fix is in.
Smells dirty to me.
Something is rotten in Gary.
“I don’t know what the numbers are yet, but Gary has absolutely produced in large numbers for Obama here.”
Does this sentence sound extremely odd to anyone else out there?
I’m glad its Obama,we finally get to dump the Clintons.
If Hillary goes out looking like the shocked, disenfranchised and hurt victim, she’ll play that card for the next 4 years.
Something for the world to see? Oh oh.
Look, I’m no Hillary supporter - far from it - but I think this a preview of what we can expect in November.
And I thought the GOP was supposed to be the party of corruption.
Wouldn't that be delicious?!
Chaos at it's finest!!
Sounds like voter fraud to me. They have been waiting to see how many votes were needed to overcome before announcing, can’t make a mistake and let Hillary actually win!
In OTHER WORDS, They Are holding out to see EXACTLY how many votes they need to send in...
Gee....
Chicago-area politics.
Imagine THAT.
Gary loves Barry.
Liberals steal elections. Whether they are named Clinton or Obama.
The math is the following 200 precincts in Gary with about a 180 vote margin in each plus those literally absentee ballot (like 10 voters living in a vacant lot) will add up to a squeaker.
Trouble is Rudy Clay mayor of Gary ain't too good at math and probably did not manufacture enough to put Obama over the top...
Some CNN tool (Jeffrey Toobin I think?) was just talking about how suspicious it is that all of Gary’s votes are being held back while they “count”
Just listened to Lanny Davis babble his desperate Clintonista spin — wow, that guy is the most devoted Clinton whore, a man devoid of character and decency, a worm crawling out of the Clinton cesspool
“They are taking some time but I told them to do it right.”
Uh...how does he define “right”?
“Right” as in proper, or “right’ as in desired outcome?
someone on CNN was just talking about this.
holding out to see how many votes are needed is something done when fraud takes place.
even if she doesn’t win this go round, hillary will rear her ugly head again in ‘12 or ‘16. then there is always her daughter somewhere down the road.
So they’re going to steal Indiana for Obama.
Good. What this race needs is more controversy and division.
Usually it’s Democrats stealing an elections for a Democrat.
This time, it’s Democrats stealing an election from a Democrat.
Before, we only could look forward to Hillary stealing it from Obama.
Now either candidate’s victory will be stolen and illigitimate.
“And all the world will wonder after him.”
maybe howard dean knows? lol.
Toobin also took a shot at our 6 PM local poll closing, like that was something new instituted to screw Hillary.
Running late and he’s predicting an Obama win who is 40,000 votes behind?
Sooooooo, how much was he paid to rig it?
The ghost of Richard Daley the father inhabits Gary too. I am VERY suspicious of this absentee ballot situation being talked about. If Obama wins, I suspect MASSIVE vote fraud after this 52-48 situation going on for several hours.
Doesn’t sound too legit to me, and he IS the ACORN candidate, after all....
If here were to win the Presidency, that sentence just might actually apply. Bizarre.
Juan is smiling tonight
Two wannabe Pharaohs.
Two huge competing hordes of enslaved minds. Competing for now, anyway.
One huge hanging Chad.
I guess we can thank Operation Cheops, I MEAN Operation Chaos.
We were getting that with either of them: Obama OR Clinton.
Gary on the left
Whoa. An Anti-Operation-Chaos Operation in the works?
Chaos?
Hillary will cry foul.
"No! Guys! That's too many! Oh, Jeez!"
To paraphrase Ann Coulter...”In football, it’s called running out the clock. In politics, it’s called cheating.”
Some “judge” demanded that the polls stay open longer in “Obama Country” so Osama could catch up to Clinton. “Judges” in this country are out of control. They have made themselves into some kind of freaky little gods.
Democratic pundit Bob Beckel strongly suggested earlier this evening on Fox News that Gary, Indiana democratic operatives were corrupt. Beckel said, and I don't think he was kidding, that he had once asked, in connection with an Indiana democratic primary election, an unnamed mayor of Gary when that city's votes would be reported. The unnamed mayor supposedly replied to Beckel that he would send them in as soon as he was told how many were needed.
It was interesting to hear Beckel talk about this. He seemed to think it was a given that vote fraud is just a fact of life; a part of the election process.
This could become a primary version of Gore v. Bush in 2000.
I fully expect something like that within a few hours.
On FOX tonight, Bob Beckel told a story from his campaign days. On election night, the city of Gary had not called in any vote totals. He called the mayor and said “Mr. Mayor, when are you going to call in your numbers?”
The mayor responded, “As soon as you tell me how many votes you need.”
I have no trouble whatsoever believing this story.
Instead of the Dems pulling a Seattle on the GOP, they are pulling it on each other.
But will they let her run against a sitting Democrat president in four years?
ROFL
I agree and think this will be investigated and debated until hades freezes over, thaws, and freezes again.
The Clinton machine is at work, but Gary may put Obama over the top. Rove just said it could be as close as 700 votes.
lol
From a county population of 484,500 in Lake County, Indiana there could conceivably be enough votes ‘found’ or created for Obama to erase a 40,000 vote margin, so it ain’t over yet folks.
Don’t know how many of the adults will vote in this primary but there could be well over 100,000 votes cast plus who knows how many dead people, fictitious people, etc. It won’t be hard to pretend Obama won by 110,000 to 60,000 or so, though whether anyone will believe it is another question.
