Seismic testing in Arctic waters target of lawsuit

Alaska Native and environmental groups sued Monday to stop exploration by oil companies this summer in Arctic waters frequented by whales, seals and other marine species.

The groups are challenging federal permits that let Shell Oil Co. and BP search for oil and gas using powerful vibrations that have been shown, at times, to harm a variety of marine animals. The technology, known as seismic exploration, is used to determine the geologic makeup below the sea bed.

"The federal government is rushing to approve a burst of new seismic activity without completely studying the effects on marine life," said attorney Clayton Jernigan of Earthjustice. The Juneau-based law firm filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Anchorage.

"The immediate goal is to stop the seismic surveys this summer, but in the longer term, our goal is to see federal protection of the Beaufort, Chukchi and entire Arctic basin," said Brendan Cummings, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, another plaintiff.

The cure for this is to drop buouys that emit whale distress calls like they are being eaten alive. Pretty sure whales would avoid the area while all that would be going off.

How about going back to using whale oil for heat and light.

Its "natural"

I would like to see a public interest group start suing these environmental organizations for their share of the cost of gas. I would guess at least $2.00 of the price we pay for gas is directly attributable to their actions.

They should have to pay the first $2.00 we all pay for each gallon of gas we buy. Then we can see how much money they have left for lawsuits.

Neal Boortz on his show today (may have been a best of segment) commented that if we found the worlds largest oil reserve somewhere in America and it would allow us to import zero oil for 30 years the environmentalists would do anything and everything possible to prevent us from extracting a single drop.

And he is right.

It's ok, the Russians are claiming all of the Arctic basin for themselves and will be glad to hire Shell to come in and pump out the Russian oil when they conduct the seismic surveys.

This, of course, is acceptable to environmentalists as Russia's a protected species, which they hope will evolve again into socialists.

How about we convert all the eco-fascists into bio-fuel?

But seriously, why hasn't there been a class-action suit against these subhumans for damage to the world economy?

I think we should determine if Eskimos urinating in the Arctic Ocean or into any stream or river, or on any contiguous land mass will damage any animal or plant life in the Arctic basin. A subsidiary study should also determine if flatulence from persons eating whale blubber damage any ecological systems in the Arctic during temperature inversions.

Jason Lewis floated the idea on his show tonight, too. Given the amount of money involved, I’m sure we’d have no problem finding lawyers who would give it a shot.

The environmentalists argument is ridiculous as seismic events occur around the Arctic naturally.

Whales will be no more unsettled by artificial seismic noise than they would be by naturally occurring seismic events.

Ok, well maybe they do freak out during underwater earthquakes. But SO WHAT!
