Indiana nuns lacking ID denied at poll by fellow sister

By DEBORAH HASTINGS, AP National Writer 8 minutes ago

About 12 Indiana nuns were turned away Tuesday from a polling place by a fellow bride of Christ because they didn't have state or federal identification bearing a photograph.

Sister Julie McGuire said she was forced to turn away her fellow sisters at Saint Mary's Convent in South Bend, across the street from the University of Notre Dame, because they had been told earlier that they would need such an ID to vote.

The nuns, all in their 80s or 90s, didn't get one but came to the precinct anyway.

"One came down this morning, and she was 98, and she said, 'I don't want to go do that,'" Sister McGuire said. Some showed up with outdated passports. None of them drives.

They weren't given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back in the 10-day time frame allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said. "You have to remember that some of these ladies don't walk well. They're in wheelchairs or on walkers or electric carts."

Nonetheless, she said, the convent will make a "very concerted effort" to get proper identification for the nuns in time for the general election. "We're going to take from now until November to get them out and get this done. You can't do this like school kids on a bus," she said. "I wish we could."

Elsewhere across the pivotal state, voting appeared to run smoothly, despite the fears of election experts that the Supreme Court's recent refusal to strike down Indian's controversial photo identification law could cause confusion at the polls.

I thought you were allowed to vote provisional, having to reconcile (prove residency) within 10 days?

Fine, let these 12 cast provisional ballots, and if the election is within 12 votes, verify ‘em and count ‘em.

I don’t know, I asked for a Democratic ticket and the election judge there laughed in my face and refused, told me I had to take a Republican ballot or none at all.

True story

My mom was the judge there and my wife was the I.D. verification worker. They flat out refused in very loud and embarrassing voices, I felt so violated...

One call to the Diocese and these ladies would be picked up by a van for seniors or other Catholics would do it. Hey, I would do it.

It’s a set-up

Yes, I smell a set-up..... they knew, they were told in advance, the law is the law..... yes arrangements could have been made beforehand for them to obtain the proper ID but someone preferred a publicity stunt for the Demagogues instead.

Why did it just happen to be one of their own “sisters” turning them away? Couldn’t be that that was done to try to make the law look bad, could it?

Another woman said she was turned away from casting her first-ever ballot because she had only a college-issued ID card and an out-of-state driver's license, Perez said.

This one's BS ... if this student has an out-of-state DL, she's an out-of-state resident, and should be voting by absentee ballot in her home state.

BTDT. It's no big deal.

one person complained about the voter ID law when he attempted to use a federal identification that didn't have an expiration date on it.

If that federal identification is the sort of thing I think it is, he shouldn't have been trying to use it except at work and bloody well knows that.

God forbid the sister have to go through all the trouble of getting a photo ID in order to vote. After all, that’s so much worse than sweating and bleeding for years in uniform, which is what some of us had to do to earn her that vote.

Exactly. How long has this law been on the books? Considering it’s been all the way to the US Supreme Court, it’s been a while. Certainly long enough for them to come into compliance, if they’d wanted to. Definitely more about getting it on film than anything else.

In New York State, we don’t have to show a photo I.D., but we do have to sign to vote and there is a facsimile of our signature so the poll workers can match them. I’m not sure how alert the workers are, or how closely they compare them though.

Here's a blog entry that talks about the author of this article.

AP ignores vote fraud

The following is a qouted from one of her articles.

"These folks live in Indiana, home of the country’s most restrictive photo-identification voter law. The U.S. Supreme Court is now scrutinizing whether that statute violates the first and 14th amendments, in the most contentious legal battle over voting since the high court issued a bitterly divided decision eight years ago that stopped Florida’s recount and handed the presidency to George W. Bush."

You’re correct about the provisional ballots. It’s not important enough for the Democrats to bring these ladies to motor vehicles, because - after all - if they did that the reasonableness of the i.d. requirement would be proven.

“They weren’t given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back in the 10-day time frame allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said.”

I think the provisional is for those who say they are registered and their name is NOT on the list at the polls. When the ballots return to the registrar's office, they check to see if the individual is actually registered.

An ID is to determine if you are the person whose name is on the list of registered voters. If you give someone without ID a provisional ballot, it does not mean they are who they say they are and the registrar's office cannot ID you later on as the same person who went to the poll.

An outdated passport should have been acceptable for ID. They have to be renewed in order to be used to leave/enter the country, but that has no bearing as to their validity for identifying the holder.

1) There was priest who worked for the Mexicans in the 1800's and he advocated bring black slaves to Mexico to make it easier on his people. I think most of the nuns think the same way.

Militant feminism runs rampant in female religious orders.
