Rep. Fossella Arrested on Charges of Driving While Intoxicated
The Washington Post ^ | May 1, 2008 | Daniela Deane

Posted on 05/02/2008 8:14:02 AM PDT by RDTF

Rep. Vito J. Fossella (R-N.Y.) was arrested overnight in Alexandria and charged with driving while intoxicated, court records showed today.

Fossella is scheduled to appear in Alexandria General District Court on May 12 for an advisement hearing, the records said.

No other details were immediately available.

Reached by phone, Fossella's communication director had no immediate comment on the report.

Fossella was elected to Congress in a special election to represent the 13th Congressional District of New York in November 1997, according to a biography on his Web site. The district includes Staten Island and the Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and the Bensonhurst and Gravesend neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

I clicked on the headline fully expecting to find no reference to party affiliation in the article.

What a shock that it is in the first sentence. Not so shocking that the author and the WaPo were eager to get it in as soon as possible considering that Rep. Fossella is a Republican.

Take note that Congressman Fossella’s party affiliation was mentioned in the first few words of the article. Were he a Democrat, his party affiliation would have been buried several paragraphs down, if it were mentioned at all.

Good grief......I guess with a big election coming up, it is time for our Republican Congresscritters to start being ‘self destructive’ again and hurting our chances to take back Congress! (eye roll)

Of course, the media will jump all over it while ignoring the dem scandals!

Heavy sigh.................

Didn’t he even have the presence of mind to say that he was “on his way to vote” at the Capitol Building?

So I’d bet there are MANY of us....that say “Oh but for the grace of God.....that would have been me”.....Not now...I’m too old....but certainly once or twice in the last 30 years!
Sad for he & his family.

Fossella should survive this if he plays his cards right, and he has already issued a public apology. He is popular in his district, the only Republican-leaning CD within NYC, and his Italian surname is definitely a big plus there. The feeling here is that voters will cut him some slack, and that the case will quickly be plea-bargained so as to get it out of the NY media ASAP.

Fossella won re-election 57-43 in the 2006 election. The Dem he defeated is trying to run again. The Dem primary is in September for that district.

Did he forget the Kennedy contingency plan? When a DWI arrest is imminent, say you are rushing back to congress for a vote.

Rank stupidity.

He will take his lumps and get reelected.

His district encompasses probably 80% of the conservative neighborhoods in NYC - excepting the holdout conservative enclave in south Queens.

BTW, the Democrat who represented part of that Queens enclave in the NYC Council - Dennis Gallagher - pled guilty to sexual abuse last month and resigned.

He had been being groomed as a potential successor to Nydia Velasquez in Congress.

Vito Fossella is an asset to Staten Island. I hope this act of stupidity does not garner us a Democrat in the up coming election. Vito Fossella is Irish-Italian. He has lots of fans on Staten Island as well as detractors. As for his surviving this dreadful incident, I don’t know. A year or so ago he was being trashed in the NY newspapers over some stupid thing. I can’t remember what for All I know is that Elmo the Muppet was in the photo with Fossella. I wish him and his family the best of luck.

Speaking of Kennedy (I assume you mean Patrick Kennedy in this case), at least Fossella wasn’t drunk enough to crash his car. No injuries, no property damage. My guess is that Fossella’s blood alcohol level wasn’t all that high, because it wasn’t released by the drive-bys.

My first impression at seeing Fossella in person was that he looks a lot like a young Robert DeNiro.

Because Fossella is a Republican, this should get some news. And it gives the DemocRATS an opening in his district.

DWI is the least of offenses a politician can commit, IMO.

It doesn’t come near what Spitzer did.
