WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush urged Congress Thursday to approve $770 million to help alleviate dramatically escalating food prices that threaten widespread hunger and increasing social unrest around the world.

In a surprise midafternoon appearance at the White House, Bush announced he is asking lawmakers to approve the additional funds for global food aid and development programs. The money — to be directed primarily at needy African nations — is being included in a broader $70 billion Iraq war funding measure for 2009 that the White House sent to Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"In some of the world's poorest nations, rising prices can mean the difference between getting a daily meal and going without food," Bush said. "The American people are generous people and they're a compassionate people. We believe in the timeless truth `to whom much is given, much is expected.'"

Um-I am struggling, how about keeping our tax dollars here, and tell the rest of the world to take a flying leap.

Dear President Bush,

I have tried to love and respect you, but .. well .. sir ... y'ain't no different than the socialists that create a problem and then tax us to fix the problem.

I wish you were running again ... so I could not vote for you.

Sincerely,
knarf, a registered voter for over 40 years.

Where is this $770 million coming from? Do we have a safe full of cash somewhere in Washington? This endless spending of money we don’t have is insanity.

we shouldn’t flush hard earned $ down the drain of any toilet, even if the toilet was ‘made in America.’

THe issue is they hate us, they want to kill us, etc.

If they want to eat then they should reconsider their hatred of us.

You want to strangle us with oil then we will starve you with food.

Exactly, I recently inquired about the commodities for Seniors here in my community, I finally found out where they were distributed, after making several phone calls.. one to DC, one to Sacramento, and finally two locally, and then I had to bring proof of income, and residency, go thru the red tape of signing up, and then finally getting my small box of commodities...It was like begging for this..

How about we drill for oil in ANWR, open up some new oil refineries, build some nuclear power plants and stop using corn for gas. Then we can talk about aid to countries that we have been giving aid to for ages.

Peanuts. I have 3 times that! Say, I'm looking for some cheaper food myself. American citizen that is. Where is my handout?

I thought Africa was the UN's permanent welfare case problem now. What the heck do we give them money for?

If Bush wants to give 770 million in direct food aid, then deduct 770 million from the UN contribution.

Until the UN smartens up and stops supporting all those murderous African dictators, Obama's murderous cousin and brothers Islamic extremist take over of Kenya, Stops twiddling around in the Sudan and take action against the genocide going on there by murderous Islamic militias, forget about food aid.

All that money will just end up in the hands of those Islamic murderers anyways.

The UN should stop meddling around with Africa completely, and let them develop their natural resources so they can support themselves and build their economy instead of this envirowacko idiotic plan of farming with hand tools, living in mud huts with no real electricity except for a crappy car battery and a 'enviromentaly friendly solar panel. A goat for milk, and a couple stupid chickens for eggs, and if they are lucky, they can "market" the extra ones.

What stupidity, it's no wonder they are poor and can't afford to buy food. The Un plan is for them to be a permanent welfare case for the world to support. Screw that plan. If the UN wants to do something usefull in Africa, start giving the men visectomies. Casterate them if they want to stop aids at the same time.

There's nothing wrong with using corn for gas, unless you feel pig feed is in such short supply. Not that making fuel from corn causes that either. Only the starch in corn is used for ethanol, the rest still goes towards pig feed,(and other animal feeds, dog food etc.) as well as the other tailings from ethanol production, like the nutrient rich yeast tailings. Corn grown for Human consumption, which is less than 1% of the corn grown, isn't used for ethanol production.

drilling for oil in Anwar isn't going to change anything. First, it will be years before we see a drop of it, secondly, oil is sold at world market prices, so it won't make the price of oil go down, nor will it reduce demand. All the arabs will do is cut back on their production to keep the price up. Our best bet is to develop bio fuel production and reduce our oil use. It is a excellent fuel, cleanerr, plus all the money stays in America, as well as the jobs it creates. No, it does NOT impact food supplies.

What does cause commodity prices to increase is the high costs of producing them, namely fuel and fertilizer prices which have doubled and tripled, not ethanol production. The same people that brought you 'global warming' are now telling you that commodity prices are high because of ethanol production. It's a lie. There are no food shortages either. It's a lie. What they are saying is poor people can't afford to buy it because of the higher commodity prices.

Well guess what. We can't afford to grow it at any price lower because of the higher fuel and fertilizer prices.

Maybe the taxpayer should give farmers even more subsidies, so poor people in turd world countries can afford to buy it, right?
