U.S. Wary Of Small Boat Terrorism

As boating season approaches, the Bush administration wants to enlist America's 80 million recreational boaters to help reduce the chances that a small boat could deliver a nuclear or radiological bomb somewhere along the 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline and inland waterways.

According to an April 23 intelligence assessment obtained by The Associated Press, "The use of a small boat as a weapon is likely to remain al Qaeda's weapon of choice in the maritime environment, given its ease in arming and deploying, low cost, and record of success."

While the United States has so far been spared this type of strike in its own waters, terrorists have used small boats to attack in other countries. Read More

Iraqi Special Operations Forces capture Special Groups commander (Baghdad)

Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Special Operations Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces captured a Special Groups commander in Baghdad April 30.

ISOF conducted the operation to detain the Special Groups commander who has been leading attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces in the area. The man is believed to be a weapons smuggler, and is reported to conduct improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks.

Intelligence reports link him to an IED attack in October 2007 that killed four U.S. soldiers, and a mortar attack in October 2007 that killed one U.S. Soldier.

During the operation, ISOF received small-arms fire from enemy fighters.

Two armed individuals were seen running towards ISOF soldiers and were shot and killed.

“The detention of this suspect will likely affect the ability of Special Groups criminals to conduct attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces in the area, and will possibly lead to the detention of additional criminals in the area,” said Col. Bill Buckner, Multi-National Division – Iraq spokesman.

MND-B, ISF find several weapons caches thanks to precision raids, Iraqi citizens (Baghdad)

Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers, along with their Iraqi Security Forces partners and Iraqi citizens, confiscated multiple caches of improvised-explosive devices, bomb-making materials and weapons across Baghdad May 1.

At approximately 8:40 a.m. in southern Baghdad, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, seized two Dragonov sniper rifles, an Explosively Formed Penetrator IED, and an MP-5 machine gun from the back of a vehicle.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Soldiers with 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, discovered a weapons cache west of Baghdad, hidden in a field that contained a bag of unknown explosives, two 122 mm mortar rounds, 120 rocket boosters, 544 antitank rounds, seven Russian made rockets of various sizes, 100 .50-caliber rounds, a box of miscellaneous IED-making materials, two command detonation wires, 100 blasting caps, detonation cord and four unknown rocket caps.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. April 30, MND-B Soldiers acted on tips from local citizens within the Rashid district of southern Baghdad and seized various weapons and munitions.

While conducting a combat patrol, Soldiers from Company A, 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, attached to the 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., were approached by a local citizen who informed them about a cache consisting of three rocket propelled grenades and a launcher.

Elsewhere in the Karb De Gla community, a local citizen approached the area’s Joint Security Station to turn in a 60 mm mortar round he found.

Iraqi National Police from the 1st Battalion, 7th Brigade, 2nd National Police Division, working in the Abu T’shir community, reported finding a hand grenade.

“Thanks to the increasing efforts of Iraqi citizens, the Raider Brigade continues to find and destroy enemy munitions in efforts to provide a safe and secure environment,” said Maj. “Investigative Project Releases Gov’t Memos Curtailing Speech in War on Terror”
by Steven Emerson
IPT News
May 2, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is refusing to identify the “influential Muslim Americans” and “leading U.S.-based scholars and commentators on Islam” who met with Secretary Michael Chertoff in helping shape a softer approach to government lexicon about terrorists and their ideological motivations.

“Our policy is we don’t comment on the Secretary’s private schedule,” spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the IPT. Nor would she identify any of the participants’ organizational affiliation.

DHS and the State Department’s Counterterrorism Communications Center each issued reports urging government employees to avoid words like “jihad,” “mujahedeen” or any reference to Islam or Muslims, especially in relation to Al Qaeda. The Investigative Project on Terrorism is making the documents available for the first time here and here.

As we reported last week, the memos say a change in language from the U.S. government is needed to win the hearts and minds of moderate Muslims and avoid glamorizing terrorists motivated by religious ideology. “Moderate” is also frowned upon in the memos, though, with “mainstream” or “traditional” suggested as replacements.”
