Blue Dogs on Hoyer’s FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] leash

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.), the House Democrats’ point man in negotiations on an overhaul of intelligence surveillance law, is keeping his eye on conservative Blue Dog Democrats who might defect on the issue under Republican pressure.

The topic has reached a critical point because surveillance orders granted by the director of national intelligence and the attorney general under the authority of the Protect America Act begin to expire in August.

If Congress does not approve an overhaul of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by Memorial Day, intelligence community officials will have to prepare dozens of individual surveillance warrants, a cumbersome alternative to the broader wiretapping authority granted by the Protect America Act, say congressional officials familiar with the issue.

Conservative and freshman Democrats are growing skittish. These lawmakers expect campaign opponents to accuse them of imperiling national security if Congress does not enact new intelligence surveillance legislation.

Conservative and freshman Democrats are growing skittish.

In 2006, the Dems picked "conservative" candidates, especially for the House. They also kept their mouths shut. After the November victory, they claimed a "mandate" for immediate withdrawal from Iraq and other pacificist positions. This claim, however, was in sharp contrast to what actually transpired prior to the election. Dems were ordered by their handlers to keep mum. They made no claims about an Iraq early pullout or other dovish moves. That all came later. The Dems tacked those claims onto the election results -- and the MSM never challenged them on it.

These deceptive practices won't work this year, and the Blue Dogs are afraid of getting slaughtered at the polls by security-minded voters.

One of the key Blue Dogs in this equation is Heath Shuler, freshman Congressman from the 11th District of North Carolina, and failed NFL quarterback. Throwing Heath for a loss is my purpose and reason for running in the Republican Primary on 6 May.

FISA is a key issue for my race.

Please help.

God bless you and good luck with your campaign.

I don’t have much, being on a fixed income, but I went to your website and donated $20.

It’s important to me to help conservative candidates when I can, and you definitely are a good investment!
