CBS Surprisingly Skeptical on Obama–Wright
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 04/30/2008 5:19:59 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Remember how the MSM swooned over Barack Obama's Philly speech on race after the Rev. Wright tapes pushed the story to the front pages? I expected the same kind of rapturous reaction to Obama's press conference of yesterday in which he definitively ditched the conspiracy-mongering minister.

But, surprisingly, that was not the case at all on CBS's Early Show this morning. To the contrary, the tone was set by the opening graphic shown here, which skeptically asked: "too little, too late?" And when Bob Schieffer and Juan Williams appeared a bit later, they were similarly cynical. Then again, there was one bit of perhaps unintentional candor on host Harry Smith's part, of which more later.

Here's how the exchange went down.

It’s amazing to see the shifting bias in the media. Looks like Ehrenstein was right calling Barack the “Magical Negro” who would line things up for Hillary.

I’m with you. Clinton back in the White House is my worst nightmare. I’d have to hibernate and cut myself off for the next 4 years. In my mind, I wouldn’t have a President. I will never acknowledge her as my president. Anyone who lies about taking sniper fire is not fit to command the soldiers who truly put their lives on the line for us every day.

Wonder when Barack, Wright and the Obamamiacs will realize that they were set up from the beginning to make Hillary, with her horrible favorable ratings, appear “moderate”?

Why else would you run someone with the most liberal record in the Senate against her, someone who belongs to a racist’s church, someone who has written enough Marxist drivel that would hang him? That’s Hillary and Co. at their finest.

Juan Williams was one of the first commentators to say [this past weekend] that Wright seemed to be intentionally trying to sabotage Obama’s presidential run.

In my random viewing of cable news programs last night, there was one common theme and that was, “What changed between the time Obama gave his Phila. speech and yesterday?”

To the Press Club, Wright repeated many of the same assertions he voiced in previous sermons and which have been sound bited ad nauseum. There was nothing new in what he said. So why did Obama take such offense now yet not before?

That’s what all the commentators/pundits were discussing. They deduced primarily that he was being “political” which undercuts his primary message that is is for “change”, not politics as usual.

He had to do what he did yesterday, but it was too late, IMO. The constant drip, drip, drip goes on.

There is hardly a conservative commentator who has any sense of timing or strategy in this. As soon as Obama falters, they go after him full tilt boogie, not minding that they are contributing to the success of his opponent. "Why wait until after the nomination?" they seem to be saying to themselves, "I can write an article today." Not a scholar in the bunch---all this is for their careers and showbiz.

Let me know if there is an exception to my blanket statement.

Keep in mind, Operation Chaos has only been about keeping the nomination fight going.
Obama will still go into the Democrat convention with a majority of delegates (unless he crashes and burns to the point of 30% to 40% support). Obama still has all of his supporters. They want him to be the nominee, they believe any Democrat will win, no matter what. They don’t care about his flaws, his lack of experience, his naïveté. His thinly veiled radical leftist views don’t scare them, they inspire him.

How is Hillary going to take it from Obama?
Even if she runs the table on the remaining races, he still will not only have a majority of delegates, and a majority of elected Democrats supporting him, but also a majority of states won.

All the Obama fans will give a big defiant “so what?” about his pastor problems. They will continue trudging onward with blinders on.

Over at DailyKOS, they’re poll overwhelmingly says they’ve “have his back” as follows:
80% — “I thought “It’s about time!” and I have his back.”
14% — “I disagree with Obama, but I still have his back.” 4% — not supporting him (combined choices).

So no matter what Obama does, he can do no wrong in the eyes of his followers. Whatever he does will always be exactly the right thing to do.
They aren’t going to give up on him that easily.

I still think this whole Wright tour is an Obama campaign setup. Obama has just found a way to give the public what it wanted. We finally got his condemnation of the Rev and they will say We'll have to move on (subject is now closed).

Wright was hidden by Obama so well before the story became a “hot topic” that Obama showed he had control over him then and since Wright is now retired and setup in a new house (also a book deal) The Chicago Dem machine will take care of Wright now, maybe he'll run for a city council or some other city job. I'm from Illinois, that's how it always worked before. Let's keep an eye on the Rev. for awhile.

Let's see how they solve the Ayers question now.

Little green Footballs notices that the little Lefties at Daily Kos are upset about Obama throwing Wright under the bus the way he did:
I have been a huge supporter of Barack. He is the guy I've been behind for quite awhile now. Check my older diaries if you wonder about that. And while I've been steeling myself for a Barack loss in November, because I think the Repug machine is too good for him to beat, I had resigned myself to still working hard for him and for the Progressive cause!

But today something changed for me...

Today, the scales fell from my eyes and I saw Barack Obama for what he truly is: a weak man and a standard politician. I really never thought I would say this...

But I am disgusted with him!

I wouldn’t count Obama out just yet. We don’t know what damage he’ll do to Clinton on his way down. As long as they keep scraping and exposing each others uglyness to the bitter end in June, neither of them will have much of a chance of winning the Whitehouse.

This is an interesting exchange. I had similar thoughts as Harry Smith expressed after Iowa. Obama’s politics are frightening and completely wrong to me- but at the same time I found- as an American- it was a strangely wonderful moment. But the moment has passed- and while we may not be back to racial divisions as usual- we are certainly not seeing Obama as a post-racial candidate anymore. He is now an almost surreal candidate- and the more we learn of him- the less we know.

How can the Democrats really fool themselves into believing the explanation set forth by Obama yesterday? It’s simply not credible. A little while ago on Morning Joe they read an e-mail from someone named Chuck. Chuck asked Joe how was it possible for Joe to change his mind so completely in 24 hours? Yesterday Sacrborough was writing the obits for Obama’s campiagn- this morning Joe says -well good, now THAT’s done- time to move on and leave this behind. Now Obama has addressed the Wright mess and it’s over.

Huh? Scarborough is REALLY delusional.

DailyKOS is in the middle of an Obama “money bomb.”
They’re throwing good money after bad at him.
Any question that he will stay in the race?
He’s got enough money to keep on going, keep on fighting.
No reason to drop out now.

Whenever you get worried about what might happen in the Democrat nomination fight, just remember this simple truth:
It doesn’t matter who wins the nomination anymore. The Democrats have to pick between two sure losers.

"Wright seemed to be intentionally trying to sabotage Obama’s presidential run."

It's all an act. Obama and Wright spent the last few weeks planning this show so Obama could distance himself from him and appear the victim, the rational "healer" that will solve America's racism problems. Even Sharpton is in the act, appearing to be angry at Obama for his calls for restraint and no violence in NY.

We see already that's exactly how media is spinning it.

“I wish all this negative stuff about obama would have come out after he was a sure thing for the dem nomination.”

It’s pretty much a catch-22. These things came out because Hillary is STILL fighting and the press that supports her will go after Obama and allow Hillary to get in her swipes. If Hillary was taken out too early, Obama would still be considered a messiah and no MSM would even touch the controversy surrounding him. At least, they are both dirty now. Hillary can’t win and superdelegates are announcing support for Obama even with these controversies. If Hillary steals this, We can hope that the outrage from the Obamaniacs will destroy her chances.

It is TODAY'S news

I fully agree with you, it is the current coverage of current events.

I'm lamenting the exclusive focus on one issue by virtually ALL conservative commentators. Now, for reporters, this is in keeping with their assigned duties. For op-ed as well? I guess so, for the most part. But I always look for and appreciate a piece by someone who stands back, only just a bit, and uses a broader context.

In very short order, and owing to the intensity of his current pratfall for example, we'll know what Obama's likely fate is. What I don't see is thoughtful analysis of the next, immediate step this will all take and its meaning for conservatives (or the GOP for that matter.)

There's two targets out there, but one is being obscured by the "haze of battle." That's careless at best.

That may be so, but don't forget, Hillary's supporters will probably vote McCain rather than vote Obama. The Democrats have to know they haven't got a prayer with Obama.

I agree with the opinion that Obama was put there to make Hillary look more centrist and less dangerous. She will get more votes in the general election from Democrats and swing voters than Obama ever could now that he's been 'exposed'.

Even if Obama supporters stick with him no matter what, that's still only half the Democrat vote. Maybe that will climb to 3/4 in the general election.

Hillary is still very dangerous, and Obama could still pull off the "victim" act.
So they both need to keep tearing each other down till the last day.

Democrat superdelegates are more concerned with retaining their own power than a Democrat winning the White House. That’s not their job on the line.
We must view this through that prism.

Democrat party leaders have already stabbed the Clintons in the back — prematurely. I’m sure they’re kicking themselves now. It is too late for them to back away from Obama. If they give Hillary the nomination, the Clintons will begin a systematic Stalinsist purging of the Party of Disloyalists.

That means goodbye Howard, goodbye Nancy, goodbye Harry, goodbye Teddy, goodbye Kerry. And yes, goodbye Bill “Judas” Richardson. The fact is, Obama now leads in support from elected Democrats. That’s a lot of people who are going to be very worried if Hillary gets the nomination. They’ve fought hard to push the Clintons out of the Party. They’re not going to let them take over all over again just because Obama probably won’t win in November. The superdelegates now are going to be locked in a battle over which candidate is going to have a more deleterious effect on down-ticket races. It will be every man for himself. Party leaders will desperately want to protect their turf from the Clintons. Elected officials will be split over who hurts them more. The answer will depend on who their constituents are, what part of the country they live in. Some will fear the blue-collar backlash against Obama. Others will fear the anti-Clinton Republicans and independents. And of course front and center in this debate will be the all important issue of fundraising. Either candidate is going to hit a large number of Democrats with negative coattails. However, all can agree that they want Obama’s money.

Interesting. It depends on when the poll was taken though. before or after Obama's break up with his minister?

It Shows that he's still too strong, and needs more punishment from the Clintons, which, unless the bottom drops out from under her, she will deliver.

And if Obama thinks he can win, He'll do what he has to her as well.

Hopefully it ends up that no matter which of them win, both appear too disgusting for Americans to want as President.

Both are still too scary for me at this point.

http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2008/04/30/2008-04-30_barack_obama_pal_is_an_enemy_too.html

Obama was indeed only 8 in early 1970. I was only 9 then, the year Ayers’ Weathermen tried to murder me.

In February 1970, my father, a New York State Supreme Court justice, was presiding over the trial of the so-called “Panther 21,” members of the Black Panther Party indicted in a plot to bomb New York landmarks and department stores. Early on the morning of Feb. 21, as my family slept, three gasoline-filled firebombs exploded at our home on the northern tip of Manhattan, two at the front door and the third tucked neatly under the gas tank of the family car.

I still recall, as though it were a dream, thinking that someone was lifting and dropping my bed as the explosions jolted me awake, and I remember my mother pulling me from the tangle of sheets and running to the kitchen where my father stood. Through the large windows overlooking the yard, all we could see was the bright glow of flames below. We didn’t leave our burning house for fear of who might be waiting outside. The same night, bombs were thrown at a police car in Manhattan and two military recruiting stations in Brooklyn. Sunlight, the next morning, revealed three sentences of blood-red graffiti on our sidewalk: Free the Panther 21; The Viet Cong have won; Kill the pigs

Yep, plus it allows Wright to keep campaigning for him without worrying about hurting him. A perfect ending.

All Obama has to worry about appearing non-racist to is whites, and media is doing there best to make it so after yesterdays performance. It will be just as before, nedia omitting all Obama's Marxist, Jihadist and Panther black power supporters.

IF he survives this week. Hillary's turn now. She has to drop another bomb by weeks end for people to stew on over the weekend.
