Barbour touts moderate McCain
The Washington Times ^ | 4-29-08 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 04/29/2008 10:59:15 AM PDT by JZelle

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour yesterday said that he is too conservative to be John McCain's running mate but that the Arizona senator's maverick reputation will help him in an election in which moderates and independents will be more important than in recent years.

Mr. Barbour also urged Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, not to name his pick for vice president until after the Democrats' convention, when he can draw the sharpest distinction between the parties.

Mr. McCain will depend on "persuasion" to snare independents and disgruntled Democrats on Nov. 4, unlike George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections when victory depended on maximizing the turnout of each party's hard-core partisans, said Mr. Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman.

"I am a lot more conservative than John McCain," Mr. Barbour told The Washington Times at a luncheon meeting with the newspaper's editors and reporters. "It may help him that he is not as conservative as I am."

He’s going to need them to replace base conservatives!

thats good political advice, but to be the 'maverick', mcCain will probably not follow it

Haley is right on both counts. He is more conservative than McCain, but that may help McCain win as well in the currents climate. The electorate has gotten soft and has gone centrist with the years of having a good economy and general peace and stability. I don't even thing they are center right, just center, even apathetic.

The masses are not ready to return to the days of Reagan, because those days are just now really ending. The economic and political disaster that were the Carter years is a distant memory, but sadly we are now looking down the barrel at a stark reminder.

You think they would learn...

The November 2008 choice will be between McCain and Clinton or McCain and Obama.

Not McCain and YOU.

Not McCain and ME.

And sure as h*ll not McCain and whoever you wanted to get the nomination.

Can we just get on with things? Elections are not wish lists. They are choices and in America on presidential general elections they are choices between TWO people.

I cried the day Ronald Reagan past away. But he ain’t coming back and he won’t be on the ballot.

So, while McCain is certainly not everything I wished he was and there are several problem areas that he has failed us on. The fact is, he is head and shoulders above ANYTHING the democrats have to offer.

There are hundreds of reasons to vote for McCain and push him as opposed to the other candidate. Here are a few:
McCain will tax less...
McCain will hold the line on terror better...
McCain will do better on borders...
McCain doesn’t hate the military...
McCain will do more to protect the unborn...
McCain will spend less...
McCain will have more respect from foreign leaders both friend and foe...
McCain will do more to keep the death tax suspended...
McCain has a more attractive spouse...
McCain will hold the line on communist expansion in South America better...
McCain is LESS succored in re: global warming...
McCain will appoint better judges...
McCain will give more respect to the right to keep and bear arms...
McCain will give more respect to free speech...

Dunno. It might be pretty self-destructive to BE McCain’s running mate.
It would certainly open Mr. Barbour up to all sorts of abuse.

Whom should Sen. McCain choose, for his running-mate? I think that, since he’s a westerner who has been a U.S. senator and representative, he should balance the ticket by choosing a conservative who has been a governor from a state that is in the eastern half of the U.S. John Ashcroft would be the perfect choice.

If McCain wins the election, whom should he nominate for some cabinet positions? I think that he should nominate these people: Secretary of State, Dirk Kempthorne; Sec. of Treasury, John Hoeven; Sec. of Defense, Mel Martinez; Sec. of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchison; Attorney General, John Sweeney; Sec. of the Interior, Richard Pombo; Secretary of Agriculture, Frank Keating; and Chief of Staff, Newt Gingrich.

I am presuming that Haley believes that McCain needs a left-leaning RINO to capture the Presidency.

If that does happen, I can guarantee that he'll never even get a glimpse of the view from the desk of the Presidency in the Oval Office!

John McCain is way too far over to the left side for most conservatives like myself (I can speak as a Republican leader of a County Office) to vote for him but we are hoping that (1)he only plans to serve 4 years, Lord willing, and (2)he will choose a conservative as his running mate.

McCain is a totally unacceptable choice for the presidency if he (and the completely lost RNC/GOP) pair him with someone even more left leaning than he is.

I will not be able to get any of our volunteers to work the election, walk the precincts, hand out bumper stickers, or even man the phones, if we have two liberals at top of our national ticket, or even feel like doing so myself!

Much different that McCain's attack on fellow Republicans when he called the NC Republican Party “out of touch with reality and the Party” and “dead wrong”.

So where exactly are you planning on putting your Obama bumper sticker? I suggest the window as the adhesive ruins the paint.

There are only two choices dimwit. McCain is better on every issue than the DEMOCRATS. Not just a little bit he is mile ahead of the Democrat.

Good luck supporting the DEMOCRATS though. Enjoy your new party!

Whether they really like McCain or not, why wouldn’t any conservative Republican seriously want to become McCain’s VP should McCain ask? McCain isn’t young, and he may end up serving just one term anyways should he become the next POTUS and live during that whole time. The way this present Presidential race is going with both Hillary and Barack still “shooting each other in the feet”, McCain may win it without most of the conservative base even voting for McCain on November 4. I’m still more concerned with what the next Congress will seriously look like after January ‘09.

The color of my daughter’s eyes, with wispy blond clouds the color of my son’s hair. It all serves to remind methat I’m a grown up and I don’t get everything I want or even need. The constitution can’t make people smart, it just gives them the right to be so or prove they are not.

There are hundreds, even millions who I am sure would make a better president than McCain. In the end it will either be McCain or the Democrat candidate who wins. I will try to make sure that it is McCain.

Any Conservative who ties himself to McCain will tie himself to the disaster to come, and will be consumed by it. Conservatives in politics smell what is coming, and they will continue to politely remove themselves from the midst of it, or suffer the consequences.

In a word, yes.

I want to make it really clear too: It is my greatest desire to stand with my defcon friends. I really do want to do so. It pains me not to, and it pisses me off to no end to be put in a position where I cannot.

I can’t criticize you for thinking the way you do. I have struggled with this myself. We have to follow our consciences.

Thank you for that.

America has never stood in greater peril.

Truer words were never spoken. IMHO, the most imminent danger is the poor faith of the Republican party. If we lose our sovereignty, by way of the nefarious designs of the Republican leadership, the war, the democrats, and every other thing amount to naught.

There is no other fight if the Republicans will not stand and fight for what we all know is true, and all the more so if they would aid and abet our enemies. It is for that end, for the restoration of conservative principles, that I will strive.
