Man Who Took Lampshade 'Lie Detector' Seeks Settlement
TheJacksonChannel.Com ^ | 4-25-08

JACKSON, Miss. - A mentally disabled man who was given a fake lie detector test is still waiting for a settlement after six years. Pearl police admitted that officers put a lampshade on Huey Granger's head in June 2002. Granger had filed a police report claiming that his daughter was attacked by her boyfriend in their Pearl home. While at the police station, officers Keith Peterson and Jeff Thames gave him a "fake lie detector test."

Granger is adamant that two former Pearl police officers should pay for his pain and humiliation. He is asking for $2 million in a civil lawsuit against the two men.

"I'm asking for $2 million tax free in my pocket and my insurance paid for the rest of my life," Granger said Friday following a hearing in federal court.

I wonder if this is the case where they put a sheet of paper in a xerox machine with the words “HE’S LYING”, and everytime he answered a question (with the lampshade on of course), they’d hit the button of the copier, and then show him the sheet that popped out the side “HE’S LYING”.

2 million dollars and his insurance premiums paid for life?

How about a buck-two-ninety-eight and the 1-800 number for GEICO?!?

LMAO!

The police apologized and for restitution, they provided Huey with very rare mind reading device he can wear around his neck to gain the powers (aka a toilet seat from the station bathroom).

The reward he is asking for is excessive, but the stupid city authorities refused to settle it earlier. Frankly, they deserve a little pain over this.

The story doesn’t say what happened in the alleged crime. Was there ever an investigation of the man who he said attacked his daughter? If guilty, was he punished?

It’s funny, but it’s also not funny, to have people picking on this guy and his family because he doesn’t have all his marbles, and then the police coming and joining the fun.

I agree with you. This is outrageous...mental torture of a mentally disabled person. For a judge to rule the City isn’t responsible for the actions of it’s police force is very disturbing to me. They should have to pay every dime. For the other posters making light of this I find it inappropriate.

A mentally disabled man

What's wrong with your moral compass? He's mentally disabled. Maybe the cops were just like you, having fun at the expense of a disabled man.

Not me, I’m from a whole family of fruitcakes.

Granger was mentally abled enough to find a lawyer and ask for $2,000,000 +. How disabled is that?

"I'm asking for $2 million tax free in my pocket and my insurance paid for the rest of my life,"

ClarionLedger--In 2005, a federal judge dismissed all claims against the city, Slade and Brenemen.

"Plaintiff's case against the remaining defendants has remained inactive for 18 months, with no action by plaintiff to prosecute the sole remaining claim," Tims and Peterson's attorney, Mark Fijman, said in court papers.

Fijman wants the case returned to the inactive docket.

A videotape reportedly shows that on the night of June 2, 2002, Peterson took Granger into an interrogation room, placed a lamp shade on Granger's head and told him it was part of a lie detector test. An electrical cord ran from the lamp shade to a nearby computer terminal.

It also reportedly shows Peterson striking Granger on the back of his neck.

Peterson and Tims had taken Granger and his daughter to jail after Granger attempted to file a complaint against a juvenile male he found in his home. Granger said his daughter, then 16, told him the young man, a former boyfriend of hers, forced his way into the house while Granger was at work.

In the original lawsuit, which represents one side of a legal argument, Granger alleges false arrest and police brutality. He also says Brenemen pressured him into signing a hastily prepared agreement that he would not file suit against the police if any criminal charges against him were dropped.

Granger told The Clarion-Ledger he knew the contraption Peterson was using wasn't a real lie detector but said he was scared and went along with the charade.

Granger, who wears a battery operated neck massage brace, said he still has a lot pain in his neck.

Granger, 49, who has a learning disability seems like a "pretty shrewd fellow". Perhaps the attorney is the shrewd one. If embarrassment was a factor, announcing the case to the whole world in the press, when none of us were previously aware, would appear more humiliating coupled with the lawsuit for $2 mil. bringing it front and center into "snicker-doodle" territory.

I swear, some people on this site are more sensitive and easily offended than any liberal I know.

Yes, it was obviously wrong what these police officers did. But it's not a multiple homicide or something; it's a stupid, and somewhat silly, story, and there's nothing wrong with making a few jokes about the story (NOTE: many of these jokes that are offending you are making fun of the story, not necessarily the victim) on a discussion board.

“it’s a stupid, and somewhat silly, story,”

FROM THE ARTICLE:

“He hit me in the back of my head and messed my neck up pretty bad and put a lampshade on my head with electric wires hooked to it and was trying to shoot electricity to me and get me to change my story to what happened to my daughter,” Granger said. The incident was videotaped and the city admitted the officers were wrong. Peterson and Thames were suspended and both eventually left the department.”

Physical Abuse, and possible electrocution by LE, to an innocent mentally retarded American Citizen, is a joke?

I was told by my insurance agent who is "hometown" in their advertisement and whom I have always had great satisfaction with; that when I added a "blanket coverage" to my homeowners insurance in case some uninvited moron hurts himself on my property and wants $$$..I should pick the figure $2 mil as that is what will satisfy the attorney. I had asked if more would be more protective, but was told, "No..$2 will make them happy". For the small amount added to normal coverage is well worth the investment in Sue Happy, USA.

A little investigation might find that the ‘boyfriend’ had some ‘police buddies’ who were protecting him.

Like....”Peterson and Thames were suspended and both eventually left the department. “

I don’t understand....he goes to the police dept. to file a report on what he believed to be a crime against his daughter and they pull him into a room and fake a lie detector test? Do they do this to everyone that comes in to the police station to file a report? I don’t get it...something is missing here.

“Does anyone know if his daughter really was attacked by her boyfriend?”

A good point to consider.

However, do the police have the right to hit a retarded person in the back of the head, and connect wires to a lampshade, put it on his head, and possibly electrocute him?

Or make him think they are going to electrocute him?

Isn’t that truly sad, despicable, immoral, and illegal behavior by the police?

Seems the LE management thought so.

These two are no longer cops.
