Police and federal agents have been raiding indoor marijuana growing operations at houses in the Seattle area.

The U.S. attorney's office says 14 people and two companies have been indicted.

Federal agents and police called a 1 p.m. news conference Wednesday at the federal building in Seattle to discuss the raids and the investigation they call "Operation Green Reaper."

DEA and ATF should be merged into the FBI.

Anytime an agency is dedicated to enforcing only one type of law, increasing the reach and restrictiveness of said laws gains an automatic constituency. Overzealous enforcement also becomes an agent of bureaucratic survival.

LOL!

That's not the only one.

Hemp, that industrious little plant of the cannabis family, was once used almost exclusively for canvas on sailing ships.

The plant that helped win the Revolutionary War and create our federal government has now been outlawed by that government.

How bizarre is that?

I don't understand. Are you saying that someone should only be arrested if they hurt someone else? And what do you mean by "hurt" -- does that include "offended"?

How bizarre is that?

The previous ruling party of Afghanistan has funded many military operations, including 911 from the proceeds of selling naturally occurring opium scraped off the innocuous little poppy plant.

When you buy illegal drugs, you're handing your money over to criminals to fund whatever messed up plans they have for that money to further increase their wealth (like buying guns for a home invasion robbery- maybe yours) or buy much more potent and addictive drugs.

What did you think they do with the money, build daycare centers?

BTW, no one sells hemp for drug use, it did not create our government or win the war, it was phased out because, besides having a low tensile strength compared to modern fibers, it's prone to rot, just like the brains of pot smokers.

Why do you think they call it dope?

“You also opposed to enforcing laws against harvesting & selling “natural” mushrooms, and hashish, and opium?”

Not the “selling” part. The govermnet has the right to regulate commerce. It has no right to dictate what plants you may or may not grow in the privacy of your own home.

You are obviously ignorant as to what LE is going after in these most recent raids. These are LARGE GROWING OPERATIONS, certainly not for "personal use." This isn't a libertarian issue. The size, financing, commercial quantity, and foreign influence (Canadian, Vietnamese) makes going after these ops necessary for the protection of children and others in our society.

Operation Green Reaper

After you read what is going on here, then come back and tell us LE "has no right to dictate,..." blah, blah, blah.

I could give a crap less.

The federal government should have NO power to tell people how many of what plants they may grow in their own home.

“The size, financing, commercial quantity, and foreign influence (Canadian, Vietnamese) makes going after these ops necessary for the protection of children and others in our society.”

So you care about “safety”? FAR more people are harmed and killed participating in, or as a by-product of, the illegal drug trade than by the drugs themselves, which is negligible. If you cared about “safety” you would welcome an end to all the needless bloodshed caused by prohibition.

“Vox_freedom”, indeed. Humph. “Vox_as much freedom as I say is enough” is more like it.

Oh, I now get it. You aren't just libertarian about growing a bit of marijuana for personal use, but also don't mind huge commercial growing operations with hundreds/thousands of plants with foreign financing and gang involvement. By your statement above, you also don't think the gov't should enforce laws associated with meth, crack cocaine, or heroin or any other drug? Holding that position is not only untenable but stupid.

BTW, if you actually read the article you would have learned that five people have already been killed as part of these growing operations.

Get lost.

“BTW, if you actually read the article you would have learned that five people have already been killed as part of these growing operations.”

Were they not illegal, those lives would have been saved. Thanks for making my point for me. Additionally, were it leagal to grow your own, these “large commercial operations” would not exist. Thanks again for the help.

“...you also don’t think the gov’t should enforce laws associated with meth, crack cocaine, or heroin or any other drug?”

Nice attempt at a strawman. Well, not really. It was kind of lame. None of those drugs occur in nature as a plant that requires no refining or processing.

My problem lies in the fact that if I put a certain seed in some dirt and pour water on it, I can go to jail for a LONG time. In my opinion that is a severe abuse of government power.
