Melanie Bowers, 13, and her parents walked into Athens High School Monday afternoon to talk to campus police. They were hoping to get some answers.
"It never should have happened in the first place. The whole assignment was a silly assignment and they should have contacted us immediately after it happened," said J.R. Bowers, Melanie's father.
It was an assignment for history class--to make a protest sign for or against an issue, and Melanie said she chose illegal immigration. Her sign read, "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration." Somehow, Melanie said the sign got passed around lunch and angered a group of Latino students.
"I didn't know any of these people," she said. One young, she claimed, jumped on her back and he put her in a choke hold. "We have brick walls in the middle school and he slammed my face on the bricks."
Melanie said a group of boys also threatened to rape and kill her. Eventually, the boys let her go and when she went for help, she was ordered back to class, and told she could not call her parents, she said.
"They handled this wrong, you know, they put a child back in danger," said J.R. Bowers. "It was a very racially motivated crime."
Athens ISD gave KLTV 7 a statement, confirming there was a disturbance in the hallway, Friday between two to three students. "We have a camera system in the building," said Louis DeRosa. "We are collecting other information and statements from witnesses and this is all the information we have at this time," he said.
Melanie and her parents said they just hope the right thing is done...and quickly.
"I won't be happy until the kids that did this are out of school," Bowers said.

Their latino hearts long for Mexico, but their stomachs look to US.

The ‘Latino’ school children should be permanently expelled for a HATE crime....

The parents should sue the school and file child endangerment charges against those in charge. This is the only way we are going to stop this kind of crap. That and parents taking the matter into their own hands, supply your own scenario for that statement.

Say what! Back in the GOOD old days the criminal kids would have been immediately rounded up and the school would have called her parents - and the cops.

Two points:
1. This was NOT a silly assignment but the response to it was far more serious than silly. And;
2. The response to it by students is testament to a) The lack of control the Administration of this school has over the conduct and protection of it's students and b) The degree of 'Socialization' (AKA as brainwashing) that the students have been subjected to such that the free flow of ideas and opinions is met with Nazi style tactics.
If I had children they would definitely not be attending any school like this.

Probably a way to find out where people stood on issues.
This is the monster that PC-coddling hath beget. Younger generations thinking they are beyond any sort of criticism or policy, directly or indirectly.
False Report Charge For Girl In Athens School Attack
After the incident, administrators reviewed videotapes of the incident - which instead of showing students beating her, instead showed Bowers scratching herself on her arm. Some students reportedly threw her project into the trash, but no physical attacks or threats were substantiated
There needs to be a lawsuit.
My daughter’s kindergarten reports if my kid hits someone else or gets hit. A gang banging / beating certainly is reportable, even as a crime, but certainly as a school event.
And if you have to call your parents if you’re late or take an aspirin, but a violent assault is a no?

First, this is one case where I’m in favor of a lawsuit just to give the schoolboard a little inkling of how stoopid this was.
Secondly, how much more of this has to go on before people realize sending their kids to public schools places them in all kinds of danger?
And what were the kids supposed to learn from this assignment? How to use crayons?

Not necessarily. If the student had stuck to only taking the politically correct side of an issue like she was supposed to there would not have been any problem.

Not unlike other reverse racial/ethnic claims. However, in this case (as in all other-ethnic complaints) it is the accusation that WILL and SHOULD stand simply because it is made. The shoe is on the other foot, and it needs to be made to fit. Turnabout is fair play. She was harassed. She was white, they were Latino and harasssed her because of her beliefs (which she was ‘forced’ to document).....the offenders should be expelled without question.

I should've known you'd overplay your hand. You lucked out when it turned out the girl in Texas was lying about being brutalized. Those of us on our side readily conceded it, including Michelle Malkin, and your response is to compare us to Al Sharpton. Surely you're aware that Sharpton fully knew the Tawana Brawley incident was a hoax, and he perpetuated it knowing it was a hoax. Has anyone here done that with this case? Did Michelle Malkin do that?

Wrong answer. When Tawana Brawley turned out to be a lying sack of crap (almost literally), or when Crazy Crystal Mangum turned out to be lying against the Duke lacrosse players, Reverend Al stuck with them (well, he did get AWFUL quiet about Crazy Crystal). When we find out that this girl lied about this attack, we rightfully decry what she did and hope she gets proper punishment for it.
One lying girl in Texas doesn’t make the problem of illegal immigration any less urgent, and it doesn’t make the solutions to it any less valid—build the fence, crack down on illegals’ employment, make them ineligible for social services, deport them when they’re found, and codify that anchor babies are not US citizens. Just because a middle schooler decided to turn into a drama queen and get herself on television as a victim doesn’t invalidate a common-sense, get-tough policy on illegals.

I stated that you were entitled to gloat in this case. But you are not entitled to lie, and lying is exactly what you are doing when you compare Michelle Malkin to Al Sharpton and accuse her of lying.

It is, but you aren't. You know perfectly well that Sharpton deliberately perpetrated a fraud in the case of Tawana Brawley, and that Michelle did no such thing.

I wasn’t digging at you. It just ticks me that when something like this happens with the case reversed (now that apparently the white girl pulled a Tawana Brawly) people are so quick to forget there WAS racial/ethnic intimidation, just didn’t draw blood.....
