Sen. Biden: Troop buildup is failure

A leading Democrat on Saturday declared last year's troop buildup in Iraq a failure.

Sen. Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the military push didn't succeed because U.S. troops remain committed there in large numbers and political reconciliation has not been achieved.

"The purpose of the surge was to bring violence in Iraq down so that its leaders could come together politically," said Biden, D-Del., in this week's Democratic radio address. "Violence has come down, but the Iraqis have not come together."

He later added, "There is little evidence the Iraqis will settle their differences peacefully any time soon."

Biden offered an early rebuttal to next week's testimony by Gen. David Petraeus, the top military commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador there. Petraeus and Crocker are expected to say the recent buildup in troops has succeeded in improving security. But they also likely will say that a period of assessment is needed this summer before officials can decide whether troop withdrawals can continue.

By Biden’s measuring stick, the Dimocrats should have totally ended poverty and crime in the U. S. many years ago.

Sheesh, I wonder who Biden heard say what he’s quoted as saying here so he could “appropriate” their words?

I think Deleware, New Jersey, Maryland and the Philadelphia SMSA should be combined into one state, and their allotted number of senators would then decrease to 2.

Hey joe.....pay attention.

The war is won. The political process is now free to sort its self out.

Life and history are not a football game. They are an ongoing process.

By your reasoning the USA is doomed because for the last two years the party running the hHouse and Senate have failed miserably to accomplish any thing.

Despite hair plugs and years of help from staff, the presence of Joe Biden of Delaware in the US Senate has turned out to be a failure. Consider that when he gives a stirring speech it turns out to be stolen. When he speaks on his own, he's dismal.

It's like the short and nasty review of a new play. "This play is both good and original. The parts that are good aren't original, and the parts that are original aren't good."

The Democrats admit The Surge was a military success but its killing them to acknowledge that change is coming slower than they would like in Iraq.

Let’s see, American declaration of Independance was issued in 1776 and wasn’t it 1787 before it was a reality and our differences settled? So let’s see the war started in 2003 and it is now 5 years later. I’d say that they have about 6 years to go before buffoons like this get to complain.

The Dems are being smart. They are laying he groundwork so that Gen Petraeus’ testimony next week in the Senate on the positive events in Iraq will not be believed. The Dems desperately do NOT want the American public to think that Bush is right and that we are winning in Iraq.

Seems democrats can only look for failure. Failure in the God ordained climate, failure in protecting America, failure in understanding the real reason we went to war, failure to understand cutting taxes helps the economy, failure in understanding most countries use their lands to provide for their own energy needs - not to keep a large vast supply for a pristine site that no one ever sees.

Seems everytime I look at a democrat - I see total failure. Failure to be educated, failure to preserve the country, failure to trust its people.

Well, it is time Americans wised up to the media and its desire to give them only propaganda and lies.

Maybe that should be our main thrust in the coming democrat years. Reveal the truth of the media day in and day out until every idiot in the country understands they are being lied to by the mainstream media.

They have sure been successful in hindering our message - time to turn the tables on them.

Biden offered an early rebuttal to next week's testimony...

re·but, verb, -but·ted, -but·ting.
1. to refute by evidence or argument.
2. to oppose by contrary proof.

Civil Society Is Beginning To Grow In Iraq

The surge is yielding major changes in Iraqi political life. With security improving, local citizens have restarted the political process in neighborhoods, cities, and provinces. Grassroots movements have sprung up all around the country. These groups of citizens are determined to protect their communities, they are determined to fight extremism, and they increasingly participate in civic life.

* Today, some 90,000 Iraqis belong to local citizens group bearing the name "Sons of Iraq." The Iraqi Government has pledged to incorporate about 20 to 30 percent of these "Sons of Iraq" into the Iraqi army and police forces.

* Leaders in Baghdad are responding and the legislative achievements in Baghdad over the past four months have been remarkable.

* In December, the government enacted a pension law that will allow tens of thousands of Sunnis to collect the retirement benefits they were promised.

* In January, leaders enacted a de-Ba'athification law that allows mid-level Baath party members to re-enter political and civic life.

* In February, leaders enacted a budget that increases spending on security capital reconstruction projects and provincial governments.

* The same day in February, leaders enacted an amnesty law to resolves the status of many Iraqis held in Iraqi custody.

* Last week, leaders reached agreement on a provincial powers law that helps define Iraqi federalism, and sets the stage for provincial elections later this year. That is an important piece of legislation because it will give Iraqis who boycotted the last provincial elections – such as Sunnis in Anbar or Ninewa provinces – a chance to go to the polls and have a voice in their future.

All this from a government that is only TWO YEARS old!

What has the US CONgre$$ accomplished in the same time frame, JOE?

Should read their own Benchmarks. Iraqis have accomplished 12 or 13 of 18 Benchmarks. Congressional Democrats have accomplished..I think about 1 thing they promised the Voter in 2006.

Comparing the Iraq Parliament’s batting average to the average for the Democrat controlled US Congress, Iraqi's record is a huge success story while the Democrat controlled US Congress controlled record is one of total, absolute, failure.

>>Why do the folks in Delaware keep voting this piece of trash into office.

Having lived in Delaware for 34 years (not by choice), I feel somewhat qualified to answer.

The reason is simple - Delaware has only one political party, the Democans or the Repubcats, not sure which.

Witness the debacle this year: Republicans will NOT field a candidate for Governor. This despite two announced candidates = but they don’t meet the party’s idea of what a candidate should do and say.

Or that most state races for House and Senate are decided at the primary, or worse, running unopposed.

Good Lord, I wish he'd retire. Everybody we've put up against him has lost, because he promises Wilmington their welfare. The rest of the state collectively cringes and groans whenever that jackass appears in public. Ugh.

Him publicly threatening to shove his Rosary beads down someone's throat was the last straw for me. He should be excommunicated.
