CIA director Michael Hayden said today al-Qaeda was training operatives who "look western" and could enter the United States undetected to conduct terrorist attacks.
General Hayden said the terror network over the past 18 months has established a safe haven in tribal areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan where they are preparing militants for attacks against the West.
"They are bringing operatives into that region for training - operatives that, a phrase I would use, wouldn't attract your attention if they were going through the customs line at Dulles (airport near Washington DC) with you," Gen Hayden told NBC television.
The new recruits "look western" and "would be able to come into this country ... without attracting the kind of attention that others might", he said.
In an annual threat assessment released in February, US intelligence reported that it had detected an influx of new western recruits to al-Qaeda safe havens in Pakistan's federally administered tribal areas since 2006.
Gen Hayden said the improved intelligence techniques in the region were due to "good cooperation from a variety of allies" that the CIA has received in Pakistan's tribal regions.

AQ has always been a highly disciplined intelligence organization. That’s why, I’m sure, that OBJ rejected that “American Taliban” guy from Marin County. He screened him, personally, and decided that he wasn’t tough enough or secure enough to let in past that of a low level fighter.
Opening to “western looking” types will allow them to be more open to infiltration.
It also will make airport screening more fun, I’m sure.

Why be so secretive about it? All you have to do is to apply for an immigration visa and join your terrorist buddies already in the country.
While the border fence crowd have theirs, and the entire nations attention focused on Mexico, AQ will slip in from Canada.

I would not discount this idea at all, Al-Queda and the Taliban were among those who provided manpower for the Mujahdeen battalions of the ABiH during the war in Bosnia. Those battalions often recruited locally as well as internationally to replace losses. So, the network of contacts is already there.
