I have yet to hear someone explain how the shouting with each stroke helps tennis players. If you've ever been sick and had coughing or sneezing fits, you know that making that much noise takes a lot of you. I remember one match years ago in which Maria Sharapova had to go to a third-set tiebreaker. She was so exhausted, she barely made a peep. I was thinking about how she could have saved some energy earlier in the match by shutting her trap. She may have won in regulation instead of losing.
If making a racket (pun not intended) helps striking the ball, why don't other athletes do it? You don't hear Tiger Woods scream when he hits a tee shot, David Ortiz grunt when he hits a homer, or David Beckham shriek when he has a free kick.
Rumors that theirs was a whirlwind romance in which he said, "Wham! Bam! Hank Kuehne, ma'am" could not be corroborated.
It really does help. It's a focus of energy. However, most athletes either grunt or simply expel air with a sort of burst. I do it when I play tennis.
The scream is unnecessary. It's used to hide the sound of contact with the ball and also to intimidate the opponent. There is no need to scream. If the fans don't speak up the tennis authorities will simply let it happen.
It six am. I didn't want to wake the children.
I have seen that before. It's really embarassing. However, no one seems to complain so they let it happen. Also, I believe the tennis authorities are actually afraid to tell them to stop. They are afraid of insulting the players and run the risk of them not playing in their tournies.
trust me if Wimbledon and the All English Club told them to shut their cake-holes, they’d shut up. Same with any of the majors.... if they want to earn the big bucks at Wimbledon, they have to wear white.... men have to wear collars...
So players will do what it takes to play the big events.
I think fans just need to start mocking them and laughing at them. Like screaming after each time the player screams. It would be hilarious and send a message that they sound like idiots.
I have often thought the same thing. I would be tempted to do it. It would be interesting to see what would happen if one did do it and the player demanded they remove you. Would you get support or condemnation from the other fans?
