The World According to John McCain
Newsweek.com ^ | March 30, 2008 | Newsweek

Posted on 03/30/2008 9:05:15 AM PDT by stockpirate

We need to listen," John McCain was saying, "to the views … of our democratic allies." Then, though the words weren't in the script, the Arizona senator repeated himself, as if in self-admonishment: "We need to listen." A lot of meaning was packed into that twice-said line, which was a key theme of McCain's first major foreign-policy speech since becoming the GOP's nominee-apparent. McCain was telling America, and the whole world: if I'm elected there will be, at long last, a return to what Jefferson called "a decent respect to the opinions of mankind." There will be no more ill-justified lurches into war, no more unilateralism, no more George W. Bush. Above all, McCain seemed to be saying that while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama tear each other to pieces, I'm going to be the wise and welcoming statesman patching up America's global relations even before I get to the Oval Office. Not surprisingly, after the speech last week at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, McCain's campaign could not talk enough about international cooperation—what McCain had called a "new compact." "He has such a deep relationship with so many Europeans and those in other regions, including Asia and the Middle East," said one adviser, Rich Williamson, who added that McCain has kept up his global profile by "going each year to the Munich Security Conference."

It was all very reassuring. There's just one problem: John McCain doesn't always behave according to his own statesmanlike script. In fact, while attending that same Munich conference in 2006, the Arizona senator had another one of what have come to be known as McCain Moments. In a small meeting at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, McCain was conferring with Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the foreign minister of Germany—one of America's most important allies—when the others heard McCain erupt. He thought the German was being insufficiently tough on the brutal regime in Belarus. Raising his voice at Steinmeier—who's known for speaking in unclear diplomatese—McCain "started shaking and rising out of his chair," said one participant, a former senior diplomatic official who related the anecdote on condition of anonymity. "He said something like: 'I haven't come to Munich to hear this kind of crap'." McCain's old pal Joe Lieberman jumped in. "Lieberman, who reads him very well, put his hand on McCain's arm and said gently, 'John, I think there's been a problem in the translation.' Of course Lieberman doesn't speak German and there hadn't been any problem in the translation … It was just John's explosive temper."

Let the beatings begin by the MSM on Juan McCain.

His philosophy is starting to sound a bit too familiar.

These are similar words of another John that ran for Pres. His name was John Kerry.

It’s amazing. One party’s nominee is determined to lose the war on terrorism and nationalize the health care industry. The other party’s nominee wants implement the Kyoto protocols, leave our borders unsecured and bring terrorist detainees to the U.S. after closing Gitmo.

Whether it’s Clinton, Obama or McCain, America’s economy and national security will badly compromised.

Got room for one more in that bunker? :)

He won't be President through any effort of mine. The liberals have won this round, one of their three candidates are going to get in...

We have to come back in 2012 or 2016; and it won't necessarily be through the Republcan Party.

You should be a little tired of settling for the lesser of the evils or perhaps McCain is right up your alley.....

But by the time the Democrats gathered in July for their convention, the GOP-inflicted image of Kerry had taken hold. That's why the Swift Boat attacks against Kerry's war record in August were so powerful. So many voters already saw him as a waffling wimp that, despite his clear heroism and uncontested Silver Star in Vietnam, they easily bought into the slander. In the last six weeks of the fall campaign Kerry finally changed course and came out swinging, but by then it was far too late.

Do you and the other posters on this thread agree with the above (excerpt)?

It was taken from an article written by Michael Hirsh of Newsweek. The same Michael Hirsh that penned the article on John McCain

stockpirate omitted the author in his posting.

I for one would never believe anything espoused by Newsweeek or Michael Hirsh, even to use to bash John McCain.

It would be more correct to say he might not be quite as bad as the other two.

But the problem with that is, then Republicans get blamed for the coming economic/International mess. In the aftermath, we would be lucky to get another real Conservative elected for any office for decades, if even that soon.

We would be much better off, letting them have it, then start planning to take it back in 2010 from the Legislature up.

Let the beatings begin by the MSM on Juan McCain.

The sooner the quicker. It seems to me the last real chance to avert the disaster would be at the Republican Convention. Maybe if enough serious folks get the picture, someone not quite so disastrous could be put forth. But a Republican who is outspoken in his rejection of the global warming agenda; rejection of Federal meddling and use of tax funds in moral issues like homosexuality and abortion; rejection of Federal give-aways that entice illegal immigration; rejection of tax increases and national health care in concept and principle -- to cite just a few examples of Liberal Creep ... which Republican would that be? The so-called "serious" ones are all for Federal global warming regulation, Federal or at least State health care legislation, and endless Federal oversight to "solve" market, education, and social problems.

Where and who is the Republican who rejects all that crap like I do and, I believe, that a whole lot of average level-headed Amerians do? I think there's a chance that such a Republican presidential candidate could be electrifying enough to jolt many into voting Republican for the first time.

No guts, no glory. Draggling along with Wacko McCain or opting for a younger version of the same Big Daddy Government mentality, is suicidal for the Republican party and hence, America. People need to get the picture.

No, you will probably vote for a Lame Duck who will be over ruled even his veto powers if he tries to show Conservative restraint.

You say he will keep us in the war? Not a chance, after the Democrat majority defunds the war and our troops are forced to come home like they did in Vietnam. And McLame will be powerless to veto much of anything with the coming Democrat super majority.

Besides, McLame will side with the Democrats, his “Friends and colleagues”.
