Shuler: McCain blocked immigration bill

U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler says he believes Republican presidential candidate John McCain blocked his immigration bill from getting a vote on the U.S. House floor. McCain's staff denies it.
The Waynesville Democrat spoke to the Rotary Club of Hendersonville on Tuesday. He said the Republican leadership tried to bring the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act to the House floor. They used a provision of House rules called a discharge petition, in which a simple majority can bring to the floor a bill that is stuck in committee.
The petition had 181 of the 217 signatures needed to force a vote on the bill.
"It was going great until McCain blocked it," Shuler said.
McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, called Republicans in Congress and asked them not to sign the petition, Shuler said. He said after McCain's intervention, Republicans in the House were less willing to sign onto the bill.
"We've really slowed down in the last week in Washington," Shuler said.

I’m not saying this isn’t true, but remember, Shuler IS a Rat (and a lousy quarterback!). Take his words with a large shaker of salt.

Occam's Razor requires us to explore the simplest explanation first before we go down the path with complex conspiracy theories.
The discharge petition failed because Speaker Pelosi and her minions willed it to be so.
To: Dane
It’s good to see you back on FR, Dane. At the very least, it’s amusing.
After your fellow Atzlan/Reconquista activist, End Times Crusader, got banned, things got very rational here for a while.
BTW, the amnesty for illegals bill was defeated last year with some Democrats like Byron Dorgan and others voting against it. Pro-criminal GOP politicians incl. Larry Craig, Trent Lott, and some others voted in favor of amnesty for rapists, murderers, and gang bangers.
Nice strawman....doesn’t work though.

Good point....I was thinking about the same thing as well. On amnesty, global warming, Gitmo, “education” for terrorists, and other left-wing causes, McCain is far, far worse.
Pres. Bush has his faults but those of us criticizing him might well end up yearning for the good old days before long.

Well IMO, you praising a person(Schuler) whose first vote in Congress is for nancy pelosi doesn't sound to rational to me. Most of your pro-illegal allies in the House voted for Pelosi. Now you seem to be dissing your own people. Or are you now claiming that on immigration issues that the representatives who voted against Pelosi are more "rational" than the reps who voted for Pelosi?

I don’t believe this story, because I can’t imagine that McCain would deny doing this if he did it — he’s not usually one to try to hide his actions.
If a republican comes forward and says McCain called them, I’ll reconsider it. It sounds though more like some republicans didn’t want to go on record supporting this bill, and decided to blame McCain for it.

Perhaps, but he's not above sophistry to describe his actions.

I don't know whether this story is true, false, or a misunderstanding. For example, it's possible that a McCain staffer did try to stop the bill. McCain's staff, with Juan "Immigrants steal social security numbers because they can't get legal documents" Hernandez, might have more like him.

I doubt that McCain wanted any illegal alien crimmigration bills being talked about this year. He would just as soon folks forget that issue until he is president, and then next year he’ll be able to push through the worst legislation possible, early enough for most folks to have forgotten about it by 2012.

There are quite a few dems co sponsoring this bill. Shuler is a dem. They don’t need all the repubs.
181 signed the discharge petition.

...and then next year hell be able to push through the worst legislation possible, early enough for most folks to have forgotten about it by 2012. Fat chance. If amnesty passes and the status of the 12 to 20 million illegals is legalized followed over the next 20 years by at least 66 to 100 million LEGAL immigrants who will enter thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification, this country will be in turmoil and well on its way to becoming a third world country. The bottom line is that the problem won't go away by 2012, it will be infinitely worse.

One of the lucky things we’ve had going for us was the fact that illegal alien crimingrants were breaking the law. When they are no longer breaking the law opposition will be refered to as xenophobia. It will be deemed racist to speak out against them. And I wouldn’t even be surprised to see the government enter the fray to shut folks up. I do agree with your assessment of the damage that will be done, but I also think we will soon find that it will be impossible to legally and openly object to what the government has done to us.

Agree. The country is finished if amnesty passes. Amnesty will undo all of the efforts the states and local communities have taken to combat illegal immigration. Once you legalize their illegal status, it is all over. And the costs will go up for social systems now that they are legal, which will increase access.

Right. But if Schuler's story is true (and I don't know if it is) and he can prove it, that puts more focus on the issue. So trying to keep the issue out of the news by urging House members not to sign might not accomplish what he wants.
McCain does not seem shy about urging Republicans not to be tough on immigration:

I am by no means convinced you are wrong. What I will agree to is that at this point McCain could shoot someone on a corner in New York city at high noon, and he would still get many Republican’s votes due to fear of Hillary and Barak doing to us what he most certainly will.
