BAGHDAD - The overall U.S. death toll in Iraq rose to 4,000 after four soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, a grim milestone that is likely to fuel calls for the withdrawal of American forces as the war enters its sixth year.
The American deaths occurred Sunday, the same day rockets and mortars pounded the U.S.-protected Green Zone in Baghdad and a wave of attacks left at least 61 Iraqis dead nationwide.
An Iraqi military spokesman said Monday that troops had found rocket launching pads in different areas in predominantly Shiite eastern Baghdad that had been used by extremists to fire on the Green Zone, which houses the U.S. Embassy and the Iraqi government headquarters.
"We hope to deal with this issue professionally to avoid civilian casualties," said spokesman Qassim al-Moussawi.
The four soldiers with Multi-National Division Baghdad were on a patrol when their vehicle was struck at about 10 p.m. Sunday in southern Baghdad, the U.S. military said. Another soldier was wounded in the attack less than a week after the fifth anniversary of the conflict.
Navy Lt. Patrick Evans, a military spokesman, expressed condolences to all the families of soldiers killed in Iraq, saying each death is "equally tragic."
"There have been some significant gains. However, this enemy is resilient and will not give up, nor will we," he said. "There's still a lot of work to be done."

At any rate, losing fewer than 4,000 troops to enemy action in FIVE YEARS OF FIGHTING is an unbelievably good performance! Yet our traitorous press continues to portray it as failure...
There is only one reason this is an 'unpopular' war and that there may be 'calls for the withdrawal of American forces as the war enters its sixth year'. I hope you're proud of yourselves, mainstream media...
It is many times safer to serve as part of the United States military in Iraq than it is to drive a car in the United States.
I was reading about the planned Japanese invasion last night and the US war plans for WWII called for 7M in forces total —1H for the first wave, and estimated 325,000 casualties in the first 120 days.......
While the media is constantly taking credit for things it had nothing to do with, they would be accurate to take credit for most of these deaths.
What a bunch of nonsense.
IF you support the War fine, but don’t be disingenuous about how “safe” it is over there. Hint: It isn’t.
My brother served over there and never made any claims even close to what you are making.
1H= 1M
How Original.
What a load!!
It reads like Tet all over again. The article claims that the Green Zone was “pounded,” yet not a single casualty occurred in the Green Zone. Not one.
It is safer to serve as part of the United States military in Iraq than it is to be an unwanted child on its way to an abortion clinic. Has MSM ever alerted Americans how many children have died since Row v. Wade was enacted?
Where is the story when they built the 1,000 school or killed the 10,000th insurgent?
Agreed, ANY casualty is one too many, but in war, you can't help but have some, and often, many.
On one day in the Battle for Iwo Jima, we suffered approximately 3,000 fatalities
With regards to D-Day, the breakdown of US casualties was 1465 dead, 3184 wounded, 1928 missing and 26 captured.
TOTAL US CASUALTIES (DEATHS) IN 4 YEARS OF WW II---416,000
Sorry to offend, I was just comparing the average 115 automobile deaths per day in the U.S. to the 4,000 deaths in Iraq.
Well, my math isn’t great, but with some 40,000 folks dying each year in the U.S. to automobile accidents, the number of 4,000 over 5 years seemed less dramatic.
This is the point that I was trying to make, but I got a black eye instead. ;) Next time, I’ll follow your example.
