RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) -- A Mideast peace agreement will require "painful concessions" by Israelis and Palestinians who must work together to defeat those "committed to violence," Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.
After meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Cheney stressed the U.S. commitment to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, saying it was "long overdue."
"Achieving that vision will require tremendous effort at the negotiating table and painful concessions on both sides," said Cheney, whose stop in Ramallah came just two months after President Bush's trip to the West Bank.
Abbas, a moderate, controls the West Bank and is battling Hamas militants who have taken charge of Gaza from Abbas-allied forces and have bombarded southern Israel with rockets.
"Terror and violence do not merely kill innocent civilians, they also kill the legitimate hopes and aspirations of the Palestinian people," Cheney said.
In their meeting, Abbas asked Cheney to help stop Israeli settlement expansion and military operations targeting militants, said Saeb Erekat, an Abbas aide.
Speaking at the news conference, Abbas thanked Cheney for U.S. support. But he also lashed out at Israel's settlements and checkpoints, and called for an end to Israeli military operations.
"Peace and security can't be achieved through settlement expansion and building barriers," he said. To reach peace, Abbas said, "what is required is will, courage and strong support from the international community, especially the U.S."

“peace and security” ping
“peace and safety”? - (1 Thessalonians 5:3)
Fine. Carve it out of Jordan and/or Syria.

“..Achieving that vision will require tremendous effort at the negotiating table and painful concessions on both sides..”
You mean both sides of Israel?
Or out of Saudi Arabia or one of several other islamic countries.
works for me ...
Yep. Israel is the only one that actually has tried for peace.
I think people really need to go beyond the newsmedia coverage to really understand what is being said. The conditions for a Palestinian state are so strict, they are illusionary in my opinion.
He was also quoted in saying that the administration would never pressure Israel.
As I stated before, which has fallen on deaf ears, these efforts are the price that is being paid to the British for their involvement in Iraq. Plain and simple.
“If you are a terrorist, you harbor terrorists, or you aid the terrorists, we’re coming for you.”
Man, were we ever punked!
How is creating a state for a bunch of terrorists who invented a history and nationality out of whole cloth “long overdue?”
I have had much respect for VP Cheney but spending Easter with terrorist scumbags and aiding Pali propaganda is not my idea of his proper role. Apparently the whole Bush team is in this legacy mode and that’s scary - it would be far better to publicly review all of the appalling shortfalls of the PA, discuss the nightmare of Gaza, and say that the USA will not support one inch of further concessions to Pali terrorism. What happened to the Bush Doctrine and the War on Terrorism?
Israel gains nothing by any more territorial concessions except a few meaningless words that will quickly be ignored. Allowing Pali terrorists and better position in the West Bank and Jerusalem, OTOH, would be a catastrophe of historic proportions.
Abbas, you want checkpoints relaxed? First prove that you and your people are not still a band of bloodthirsty terrorists. Think you can do that?
Right. The financier of the Munich Massacre, which launched the modern era of terrorism.
Abbas, along with his boss, Yassir Arafat, sired this scourge of the world, and now they're rewarded. It's sick.

I would hope you are correct. However I believe strongly that this “division” will eventually happen. And it forebodes very perilous times.
Obama has clearly stated he would divide Israel. I don’t know what Clinton or McCain have said, but given world “opinion”, I’d guess they might be on board too.
This was the proposed land of Israel :
The Muslims objected! The Country of Jordan was created. It was created for the Muslim Arabs. It was the first "Land for Peace" agreement. If Cheney were a student of History,The state of Israel was created at the end of WWI.

he would already know that there is a Palestinian state,
it is called Jordan.
Jordan is Arab “Palestine.”
Period. End of story.
Another terrorist state, oh yea, thats what we need. Oh man, I can’t believe we’ve got people like this in charge of our nation, and have three more just like them or worse running again.
Yep, for 40+ years, terrorism has paid handsomely.
It got scumbag Yasser Arafat to the United Nations to speak, made him a “president” and idiotic high school teachers teach that Arafat “was like George Washington”. My friend’s son told me this and he believed it after all I had told them.
Good grief
Well let’s see Cheney wrecks or rather begins the wrecking of our military and if that isn’t enough now he’s going for finishing to destroy U.S. foreign policy in the M.E. as well.
Oh there will be “peace” eventually. A man of “peace” will come.
And he will speak great words and the majority of people will worship him.
Daniel 8:25
Cheney in Mideast: Palestinian state ‘long overdue’...
cheney just stating the jorge bush legacy ~ clueless condi party line....road map to peace...that will NEVER happen...
the pali state is jordan....gaza & the west bank are just f’n pali muzzie terrorists lands.....
If the Arabs put down their guns, there would be no more violence.
If the Israelis put down their guns, there would be no more Israel.
Yes he is and let's also build a shrine to the Religon of Peace at the WTC Towers site so we can all get along /sarcasm

Israel had an ideal chance to deal with this problem immediately following the 6-day war in '67. They should've focibly deported every last Arab from Gaza and the W. Bank to the lands of their defeated enemies -- Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. And there weren't nearly the number of Palies back then -- it could've been done.
But Israel was shortsighted, and now the problem is close to unsolvable. The options are: 1) keeping the status quo (which nobody likes); 2) forcibly deport (what has now grown to be) many millions of Arab squatters (which isn't going happen, obviously); 3) neutron bomb them out of existence (again, not going to happen short of a World War scenario); 4) give them a state.
Unforunately these are the only available options. ...and all because Israel didn't act in '67. I suspect Ariel Sharon came to this same conclusion.
So what should we do? Probably just stay out of it and let the chips fall where they may. And most importantly, stop sending Muslim terrorists billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars. ...a number that will only increase if a Palie state is ever established.
Mr. Cheney, the Palestinians have had a state since 1922. It is called Jordan.
WTF? Reductio ad absurdum my impress the kids, but won’t fly here at the big people’s table.
Dear Lord, wake me up from this nightmare.
It is true!
They both died.
Personally, I wanted something like this:
Then maybe Poppy will let you sit betweeen George and Dickie for supper at the Globalist Convention. Look the Pali's are as much terrorist as anyone else in the M.E. as bad as Syria. So you explain why Israel should be forced to except them? If Israel must except Pali's then should we not be forced to excepted Radical Islam?
When we along with the Quartet divide Israel, God Himself will deliver (eventually) the nightmare of Armageddon. This is the metaphor “The Valley of Jehoshaphat” refers to in Joel 3:2.
As you probably already know. But there will be some sort of peace deal. And it will seem to “work”.
At first ...
Time for prayer, folks.
lol
I can’t believe we have idiots like this teaching such “history” in American high schools. Then again ... Rachel Corrie comes to mind. Who stirred that idiocy in her head to support terrorists? First you suspect the parents. But I wonder if it was in a school like the one I mentioned.
Who’s passing out the Koolaid in DC these days?
I don’t know. Bush claimed he was the first President to call for a Palestinian state. And it’s on the White House website:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/07/20070716-7.html
He says more than 5 years ago in a 2007 speech. 2002, or so I guess.
Here's what that site looked like on April 26th, 2006:

Took this picture myself. Still looks the same today, big hole with a tall fence that floods every time it rains.
I'm sure the Israeli’s would love to have a more civilized neighbor next door but thats not going to happen.
I don’t understand it. But there is the “legacy” thing, it seems. As I noted earlier, Bush said he was the first President to call for a Palestinian state. Those are his words, not mine and they are on the White House website.
Watch. If Israel is divided, the parties involved will all get Nobel Peace Prizes. Then again, Yasser Arafat got a Nobel Peace Prize.
It is blasphemous to divide the Lord’s land. Why would Cheney speak about dividing it on the day we celebrate the Lord’s resurrection from the grave?
Keeping an eye on all current events Eagle, as I know you are, this has been an very interesting year so far to say the least...
Happy Easter my Brother!
lotsa stuff going on ...
Here we go again: the MSM (in this case CNN) stupidly keeps on referring to Abbas as a “moderate.” But the MSM never tells us what he has done to earn such a label.
Still think he'd be a great president?
Completely disagree.
I was being sarcastic :)
Cheney couldn’t possibly be more wrong.
What brings you here? You’re against everything this site and this country stands for. Like a new born babe in a wool suit.
Thank God, LOL. Had me going there for a sec ...
Fell for that one like a ton of bricks, hehe
Eagle, just found this story and didn’t see it posted on FR yet. Netanyahu obviously disagrees with Cheney on the Bush Peace Doctrine. I am praying for our country because the Lord is clear in His word about the consequences of interfering with Israel.

thanks for the ping
If you review my posting history you will see how absurd your accusation is. Just because I don't go along with your "four legs good (Israel), three legs bad (Palestinian)" view of the world doesn't mean I am either un-American or anti-Israeli. Regardless of the rhetoric of its so called leaders or the brutality of the actions of many of its citizens, Israel cannot prevail if it denies basic human rights or political parity to the millions of non-Jews in the region. Will doing so be easy? No it won't, but that is not a reason to discard the concept.
