Clinton on Obama’s Speech: I Haven’t Heard It
New York Times ^ | 3-18-08 | Patrick Healy

Posted on 03/19/2008 12:43:30 AM PDT by kingattax

PHILADELPHIA -– Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton appeared at Philadelphia’s City Hall this afternoon, a few hours after Senator Barack Obama delivered a major speech on race not far from here. But despite the speech’s high profile and intense media coverage of it, Mrs. Clinton said at a news conference she had not heard it yet or read the text.

Many reporters muttered in disbelief during and after her remarks, surprised that a candidate as diligent as Mrs. Clinton -– who always talked about being well-prepared and doing her homework -– would not have read the speech yet. The fact that she was not prepared to comment on it, however, will keep the race issue alive for at least another news cycle, since reporters will keep seeking her reaction.

In her opening remarks, Mrs. Clinton said she was “very glad” Mr. Obama had made his speech, given that she said that race had been a “complicated” issue in America that had been marked by “pitfalls” and “detours.” Asked why she was glad, she said that issues of race and gender are “important” and twice called them “difficult issues.”

Asked if she thought Mr. Obama had done enough to denounce racially divisive remarks made by his pastor, the Rev, Jeremiah Wright, Mrs. Clinton replied, “I think that question should be directed at him” -– referring to Mr. Obama.

She was also asked if she could do anything more to tamp down the issue of race in the campaign, since some Obama supporters have blamed her campaign for stirring it up. She said she and Mr. Obama have called truces on numerous occasions, and added that “we have admonished our staffs and supporters” to avoid incendiary language.

Two comments

1) The Clintons are amazingly on message once again, and their silence on this since last week has been deafening. I have a feeling more is to come on this topic.

2) Whoever thought the day would come when many Freepers would consider Hillary to be the more palatable Dem candidate, and actually hope she gets the nomination over Obama.

POLL SHOWS RACIAL DIVISIONS AFTER WRIGHT COMMENTS (Boston Globe)

Even as Barack Obama preached racial unity today in a much-discussed speech that sought to put controversial comments by his former pastor in a broader context, a little-noticed poll shows racial divisions in how the remarks were perceived and might affect Obama’s campaign.

While 77 percent of white voters surveyed by Rasmussen Reports said the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright's remarks were racially divisive, only 58 percent of African-American voters said so.

While 56 percent of all voters and 44 percent of Democrats said that Wright's comments made them less likely to support Obama, 29 percent of African Americans said the remarks made them more likely to vote for Obama and half of black voters said they had no impact.

And while voters overall were evenly divided over whether Obama should leave his Chicago church, 68 percent of African Americans said he should not.

The survey, released Monday, was conducted Friday through Sunday among 1,200 likely voters across the country and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

UPDATE: A CBS News poll released this afternoon found that one-third of voters who had heard at least something about Wright's remarks said their views of Obama had become more negative. Republicans and independents were more apt to say the remarks gave them a less favorable view of Obama.

#2. Never ever in a million years! I want her gone and off the scene as quickly as possible. She knows all too well how to use power; Obama only knows (or has a good idea) how to get it. He’s not near as dangerous as she is.

For once, good for her.

Like all of Obama’s speeches, it’s rhetorical nonsense spiked with vapid platitudes for brain dead idiots. The more Obama talks, the lamer he seems.

SInce I believe Hillary got this race thing to the front pages...via bringing out Wright and Ferraro, it turned out to be a "Foster moment" backfire.

Couldn't happen to a nicer lady. :-)

Obama is VERY clever...and if there's a Universal oratory award....he's got it in the bag.

As President though....he's a liberal freak and pure socialist. Buyer beware!!

Hillary is far more dangerous candidate. Anyone thinking otherwise has amnesia. Rush has been playing with fire trying to keep her candidacy alive. She needs the proverbial wooden stake. I’m also sure Hillary’s people dug up the loop of the Pastor saying “G-d damn America”. Obama is being held accountable for the things said routinely in Black churches. He is in a bind, but is the last clear chance to stop the beast.

“...and their silence on this since last week has been deafening...”

Agreed about the silence from the Clinton Party. Everything has been about Obama and Wright for so long, I went to bed last night wondering if anybody was watching the Henhouse.

“...Hillary to be the more palatable Dem candidate, and actually hope she gets the nomination over Obama.”

Not this Conservative. Saddened that Hillary is still in the running. Obama I believe would be an easier knockout for the General Election bout.

The Clinton’s are dangerous.

I absolutely agree. That "ballabusta" is too dangerous.

If she loses the nomination, she is all done and will be devoured by the DemocRATS.

If she wins we may be stuck with her and that "momser" she is married to for eight years.

Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason —
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...

Hillary has the sign “racist” nailed to her forehead with a railroad spike. She won’t wiggle out of this one. The inner city voting fraud machine is “out of order” for her. And if hillary continues the attacks, it would not surprise me to see black election officials come forward with loads of documents and “confess” about democrat voter fraud.

Obama would do less damage than Clinton. She knows HOW to do damage, he’s a greenhorn yet. If we have to have a Dem president, I can stand anyone but Clinton. (A.B.C.)
