Accidentally left one of these in my briefcase while passing through TSA Xray Security at SJC -- they were a little wigged out by it.

Is that a Cray? It's a fake Photoshopped image purporting to be an old IBM mainframe - the wheel is actually from a submarine. It's been kicking around the Internet for while.

I hear some guy had a cold fusion device built that he was taking to a manufacturer that would allow our cars to run off of coffee grinds but it was mistaken for a terrorist device and blown up.

I think they are trained to look for spinning drives on the X-Ray. No spinning drives means “suspicious”, as far as the TSA is concerned. The eeePC looks like a big block of battery connected to some electronics, which is not a profile the screener wants to see.
They are going to have to get with the program. Solid state is going to get more and more prevalent. I don't need to haul around a disk drive everywhere I go, when 4GB of flash memory costs $40.

I’ve been wondering what it is. Does anybody know?
It looks to me like the controls for a nuclear reactor simulator (seems like a simulator, not the real thing). Judging from the TV monitor, I’d say it’s from the 1950’s.
BTW, the terminal in front is DECWriter, circa 1980. Somebody’s pasted it into the pic.

Why does the computer in your photo need a STEERING WHEEL? Where is it supposed to be going? Even today, your PC is useless without the necessary drivers.

Found it over at
Lady Ada's (MIT Geek) website. She calls that little gem:
Minty Boost. She also has plans for a Minty Mp3 in a full sized Altoids tin.
If you like to do geeky DIY stuff, she has some interesting projects.

The wheel gives the supervisors something to do while the computer techs are operating the real computer.
