Senate Approves Federal Budget That Would End Bush Tax Cuts (Disgusting)
Associated Press via FoxNews.com ^ | March 14, 2008

Posted on 03/14/2008 8:41:44 AM PDT by Kaslin

WASHINGTON — The Senate rejected calls from both parties' presidential candidates to take an election-year break from pork-barrel spending as a Democratic-run Congress passed budget plans that would torpedo hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts won by President Bush.

John McCain, the GOP nominee-to-be, couldn't attract even a majority of Senate Republicans to vote with him Thursday night behind the earmark moratorium touted by party conservatives as a way to restore the GOP's credibility with voters.

It failed on a 71-29 vote. Only three Democrats joined with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in voting for it.

The underlying House and Senate Democratic federal budget plans for 2009, though nonbinding, drew blasts from Republicans for allowing some or all of Bush's tax cuts to die in about three years.

The House passed its $3 trillion budget plan by a 212-207 vote. It would provide generous increases to domestic programs but bring the government's ledger back into the black, but only by letting all of Bush's tax cuts expire at the end of 2010 as scheduled.

The Senate passed a companion plan by a 51-44 vote. It endorsed extending $340 billion of Bush's tax cuts but balked at continuing all of them. The competing versions head to talks in which the House is all but certain to accept the Senate's position endorsing tax cuts for the working poor, married couples, people with children and for those inheriting large estates.

This is what we get for sitting home during the 2006 congressional elections.

That is an important lesson.

As the old Ad Council spot used to say years ago” Vote and the choice is yours. Don’t vote and the choice is theirs.”

That has never been truer.

The economy is bad, so we’re going to increase taxes to make it better, and we’re going to spend money like teenage girls loose in the mall with daddy’s credit cards...........

Yup and the "true" conservatives are "fixin" as we say here in the South to do it again. To teach the Republicans a lesson don't ya know.

I saw a guy's tagline yesterday that said, "Four years of Obama pain for longterm gain". How incredibly stupid.

Nobody is going to cut spending and pork in an election year. As for the tax increase, the media and congress will make sure it’s spun as impacting “the rich” only (knowing that most Americans think rich is Bill Gates, not a single person making over $31.5K) or there will be a wall of silence surrounding the increase. By the time it hits them in the wallet, the election will be over.

Why do they equate porkbarrel with earmarks? They must be different things or we wouldn’t need two different words. Maybe it’s that earmarks are my projects and porkbarrel are yours.

Agreed. First, it won’t be four, it WILL be eight years. He will be shielded from criticism in the MSM just like Clinton was for eight years. They spiked bad news, fabricated good news and spun everything to his favor for two whole terms. We must not let Obama or Hillary enter the White House. The fight is now, because we have a better chance to stop them now than later.

Every government is a parliment of whores. The problem is, in a Democracy, the whores are us.

This quote is the last 2 lines in the PJ O'Rourke book Parliament of Whores written in 1991.

BS

Bush had a Republican majority for most of his terms. Why didn't they make the cuts permanent when they were in the majority?

Don't blame this one on 2006 election. Put blame where it belongs -- on the Republicans for doing zilch when they had the opportunity. They were too busy raking in their share of the pork to worry about tax cuts.

As the article said, McCain -- the new conservative leader (/s) -- couldn't even garner a majority of Republicans for support. That speaks loudly of the priorities of the Republicans in Congress.

Anyone have more detail on which cuts would be left hanging? (along with us taxpayers?) I am so disgusted with our politicians, infuriated.

Great book. I love it.
Of course Shrillery and Obamanation don’t want taxes impacted this year. They need to be able to raise them NEXT year to pay for all those giveaways they’re planning.

We have barely 30 votes now. So we lose MN to Frankenberry, NH, possibly VA and NM. Throw in Snow and Collins, and we can't even filibuster.

All this because a) these morons couldn't quit spending money; b) they pandered to the illegals; c) they tried to be "friendly" on judges; and d) they didn't support the war as a bloc.

And consider that the bozos on the other side are so pathetic, McCain STILL has a chance to win despite all this.

What an incredibly stupid ah*le mentality! An Obama or Hiltery could do damage to this great country that might takes DECADES to undo. Think Jimmy Carter and Iran. This is a dead serious time in history with the War on Terror and the ecomonic system under great strain and yet we have these little BABIES who want to disregard that to make some petty little point.

Wrong, this is what happens because of corruption and out of control spending by the republican party.

The cool-aide drinkers do not want to hear the truth!!

Any Senator can put a hold on any bill at anytime and it would have taken sixty votes to get past his hold.

Vote and the choice is yours. Don’t vote and the choice is theirs.’

Exactly! I’m not a McCain fan by any stretch...but, as McCain’s Mother said.....I’ll hold my nose and vote for him. We need God’s help now but if the Dems hold all 3 branches of our govt, we’ll need miracles....

Prediction: Almost all, if not all, of the 51 who voted for this will be reelected. So much for an informed electorate.

No, the pubbie sheeple need to clean house at the GOP. The problem is within. As long as the big-business country-club globalists control the GOP, it will continue to do business as usual.

I agree the pubbies need to clean house...that’s why I no longer contribute to RNC, etc. But, having the Dems in charge for 4 or 8 years is, imho, way too dangerous for our country.

I agree with you there. It can have ramifications much longer than 4 or 8 years. Supreme Court choices will have consequences many years into the future as well as many other judicial appointments.

And the Republicans did what between 2004 and 2006? Seemed like a good time to make the tax cuts permanent to me.

There were zillions of posts on here about Freepers pledging to stay home and not vote in 2006.

I failed to see the effectiveness of such a strategy.

The GOP lost a lot of House races by a hair. Could have made a difference in control.

Yeah, the GOP had its chance between ‘04 and ‘06, but you really cannot say that what we have now is better. It’s worse. Much worse.

Your point is well taken, however.

I think it is just the pure frustration with the GOP since the victory of 1994. They win with conservatism and then do nothing or compromise with the Democrats to pass legislation that is only less socialist than the Democrats would pass. Other than not voting for RINOs, what else is there to do?

I need the house side. We have a very good candidate running against Holden this year and she will need all the ammo she can get. Holden likes to pretend he is a moderate but he has voted over 95% with Pelosi this last year.
