What a drama queen. It’s not like France has liked the US for the last 200 years or so.

This article is so WRONG-—on Sooooo many levels! A Frenchman that “thinks”, indeed.

This “humanitarian, diplomat, and political activist” sits in FRANCE, a fly-infested shit-hole, where everything including the government is falling apart, and dares criticize US? The Euro-styled intellect diminishes daily.

One on one, Aussie and Americans get along great, however, just like the USA, the media is dominated by the left and many of the anti-American articles from the US and UK are repeated in the Aussie press. Also we have the equivalent of your PBS and NPR, which is the ABC and also SBS and they are very anti-American. Even the financial paper here, The Financial Review (equivalent to Wall Street Journal) is controlled by a leftist family and is pro-Labor Party and runs anti-American articles almost every day. Also, for some reason, the theaters push anti-American movies, although I think only the leftists go to them. Also, like the USA, the universities are dominated by leftist professors and they help create anti-Americanism on campus.

However, if you are just an American tourist, you would normally only see very friendly Aussies. But you would see many anti-American articles in the press and on TV.

A lot of projection there.

You don’t hear many songs about Paris any more, as you did in the Nat King Cole days. Maybe there’s a reason?

How is it contrarian when a whole society is shot through with anti-Americanism. In that case, you're just going along with the crowd. I think it's less contrarianism and more a natural herd instinct. It's a means by which a less powerful group of people contends with a more powerful group. I just think it's the natural order of things. I'm not even sure if it's really a conscious thing -- which is why it takes the form of a hard to pin down, hard to justify, mood.

That was my take on this whole overwrought, overlong “interview”, as well.

It must really, really suck to be a Frenchman! (French man, isn't that a contradiction in terms?)

Well it kind of makes the case that most so-called ‘non-conformists’ actually like to hang around other non-conformists, and therefore do wind up being conformists.

It can't suck that bad if you have Melissa Theuriau living near you.

the worldwide anti-us opinion is entirely media driven: there is no factual basis, it eminates from the mouths of arrogant frogs and tyrants with broadcast antennas. Most of these US haters would give an arm and leg to get here

I believe that one of the reasons for the formation of the Euro-dollar was to attack and wrestle away the power of the US dollar. It looks like it is working so far.

I think the weak dollar in the world economy is caused by a lack of production,

the USA is a consumer economy based on debt.

the three main causes of poverty are :

1. lack of production

2. lack of resources

3. government opression ( socialism, over-taxation, tyrany)

the USA has two out of three

*snort* Yuh, right. And just who will the European nations call when they start having even MORE trouble with their ‘oriental’ immigrants? Somehow I don’t think they’ll look to Germany, Italy, or Spain.

The “magic” has been over since G.I.’s liberated Paris and then moved east to finish off the Germans.

I believe you. And it all will have consequences. And not good ones at that.

The message broadcast throughout the world for a long time now is that we are polluting the world, that we are causing global warming, that we are fat ignorant uncultured slobs that by accident of history became wealthy, that we didn't earn it and will soon lose it.

But in my opinion, the roots our our success lie in basic property rights, freedom and rule of law.

As long as the rest of the world continues along with a different formula for success I think they will lag behind or worse. The EU is bureaucratic to the n’th degree. Poison for free enterprise and innovation. Russia has simply become a fascist state. China has no real freedom. Slaves don't produce efficiently even if cheaply much less innovate. Much of south America is going heavy socialist again and will have the same outcome as all the times before... Africa, well one doesn't really need to say much there... Asia has more to fear from Islam than we do. It is growing leaps on bounds there and wherever it takes control it descends backwards through time. No Islamic country produces anything of value from their own labor and innovation. They have only natural resources to exploit for wealth.

So in the end, as bad as things look here in the US, they look far worse elsewhere. We will make adjustments, learn and move on. That's what we do well.

How are we going to save them this time when the Islamist are French?

Hasn’t been any civil wars in Europe in a long time. I suppose most people couldn’t even fathom the notion. Tick tick tick...

You’re hitting on a lot of it right there.

Our growing waist lines and our unwillingness to expose ourselves to other cultures are massive public opinion disasters on our end. The only nation I’ve seen where the people are even close to as fat as we have here is Britain, and even they’re better off than we.

And truthfully, when you’re in a foreign city, you can spot the ugly American from a block away—the blimp who addresses random people in English knowing full well that’s not the language of the land. And there’s no humility in doing such, either.

There’s also a particular laziness that pervades your average American regarding international politics, as well. Most couldn’t name a nation’s prime minister, much less identify if that nation has a prime minister, president, king, or parliament.

Add that onto the fact that a large portion of the rest of the world has begun to catch up up with us in terms of financial affluence (e.g. Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan), and well, you have growing anti-Americanism.

The others are right in that our national media and the international media is absolutely slaughtering us. I’ve dated internationals on several occasions, and I’ve had to invariably correct them on numerous issues regarding portrayals of our nation by the media. There are absolutely sides to stories left completely unturned in the name of slandering our nation, and it happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week now.

Finally, I think our nation does suffer a bit from our infrastructure. If you want to see England, Japan, or even Australia, you can hop on a train. You want to see the US? That only works for a very small portion of the east coast and then a bit of the west coast. The rest is wholly unaccessible unless you have a car.

And finally, as others have said, a lot of this just comes from being the only nation really capable of exerting its will on a global stage. Spain wasn’t exactly loved when it had this power, and nor was Britain. It’s our turn to share a bit of the distrust/dislike/jealousy.

We should have a mail in lottery. God, we’d be flooded by hundreds of millions every year.

Forget the idea.

Too nimble for Bush, the GOP, to wrap their pork filled jowls around.

Due to a series of missteps under both Democrap and Republican administrations and presidents, things have indeed changed.

Good Lord, with so many nations out there how can we not "misstep' according to somebody.

The truth is we need to concern ourselves with our hemisphere and keep a smaller presence abroad. Asia wants to be with Asia, Europe with Europe and so on. We have two continents here we need securing making sure all other nations keep their nose out.
