Clintons push a Hillary/Obama ticket
Reuters via Yahoo ^ | 3-9-08 | Thomas Ferraro

Posted on 03/09/2008 6:07:52 PM PDT by Pharmboy

Hillary and Bill Clinton are again teaming up on Barack Obama -- this time saying the first-term U.S. lawmaker, whom they have derided as inexperienced, would be a strong running mate on a Democratic presidential ticket headed by the former first lady.

In talking up a joint ticket, the Clintons may be seeking the upper hand, attempting to put her in consideration for the top of the ticket when she so far has failed to win the votes necessary to assure that she would face Republican presidential candidate John McCain in the November election.

The maneuver may also be aimed at countering an image in voters' minds of Obama as presidential material and at helping restore an aura of inevitability as the party's nominee that Clinton had early in the campaign but lost.

"The Clintons are in a difficult position," said Dennis Goldford, a political science professor at Drake University in Iowa, who has tracked the presidential race.

"If she wins the Democratic presidential nomination, she would need Obama's supporters. But she needs to be careful. If this talk of him on the ticket is seen as a cynical maneuver, it could backfire and hurt her," Goldford said.

Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, an Obama backer, mocked the idea.

"It may be the first time in history that the person who is running number two would offer the person running number one the number two position," Daschle told "Meet the Press."

Obama leads Clinton, a fellow Democratic senator, in a bruising race for their party's presidential nomination, but neither is likely to reach the 2,025 delegates needed to become the nominee in the remaining state-by-state contests.

As Democratic leaders worry about the damage that could be done if neither has a clear lead by the August nominating convention, the party is also trying to decide what to do about election results from Michigan and Florida that do not count because of a dispute over when they were held.

The Clintons have charged that Obama, a charismatic lawmaker from Illinois, lacks the experience to handle an international crisis as president.

But since Clinton, a two-term senator from New York, won primary elections in Ohio and Texas, she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have touted Obama as a possible running mate.

When asked about the possibility last week, Obama said he was focused on winning the nomination. "I think it is very premature to start talking about a joint ticket," Obama said.

'UNSTOPPABLE FORCE'?

Sen. John Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat who has endorsed Obama, derided the suggestion. "The first threshold question about a vice president is, are you prepared to be president?" Kerry told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

"So on the one end, they are saying he's not prepared to be president. On the other hand, they're saying maybe he ought to be vice president," Kerry said.

Campaigning on Saturday, in Mississippi, the former president was quoted as saying his wife and Obama would be a dynamic duo, "an almost unstoppable force."

The candidate implied last week she and Obama may end up on the same ticket, with her on top.

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell, a Democratic who has sought to rally support for Clinton in his state's April 22 primary, backed the idea of Clinton and Obama teaming up. "It would be a great ticket," Rendell told NBC's "Meet the Press."

As I've been saying for many years, I'm worried about VICE President Clinton.
Think of it:

• Two years and one day into her term the first slotter gets arkincided
• Under Article XXII, she can still run for two full terms as the incumbent
• The Glorious Hillary!™ Decade begins
• Hillary uses the Patriot Act to it's fullest extent, and beyond
• At the end of the Glorious Hillary!™ Decade there is a National Emergency "temporarily" delaying the elections
• Under the pressure of the National Emergency, the 2nd and 22nd amendments are repealed
• By the time the National Emergency is over all the 'improved' source code for the touch screen electronic balloting will be in place......

Just as an aside, with the Clinton's well known love of 'ethnics', Obama is very expendable, isn't he?

I hope the Clintons are desperate because I want Obama to be the candidate who runs against McCain. Unfortunately, the adjective that I fear fits the Clintons this week is “emboldened”. Extensive polling indicates that HRC is getting traction with older Democrats, blue collar workers, and women. If HRC racks up wins in big primaries in April, she will NOT go away and the Dems may be persuaded she'd be the stronger candidate to run against McCain. (I agree with this assessment.) I fear that Obama has peaked and that HRC’s criticism of the media, coupled with her appearance on SNL, led to a turning point and an increase in support for her among Democrats. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear HRC really has made a comeback.

Veeps tied to the Clintons... not your best career move.

I’ll give ya Gore came awful close, but still what an anchor those two were for his run at the WH.

Given the soap opera Bill and Hill would create in the White House, Obama would be better running as a cleanup candidate in 2012.

Sounds like HillBill can see the handwriting on the wall.

This might be an attempt to recover what they can, cut their losses and reposition the troops.

If they can pull off a double bill, then they may be able to get the senator from NY in power "post mortem" so to speak.

Act of desperation, why would Obama agree to be a vice when he can not lose now, all he needs to do is to hang on and not make a stupid move.

We can’t allow a Democrat president to use the powers of thr Patriot Act. If a Dem is elected president, all Republican lawmakers must use all their powers, including the filibuster, to repeal or fail to renew the Patriot Act. It is too much power to trust a Democrat with.

I don’t think that Hillary is thinking about playing second fiddle to Hussein. She wants him to be her Algore. While that might keep his adolescent supporters from taking their marbles and going home, and would be a benefit to her, there is nothing in it for him. He’d be tarred by the inevitable Clinton scandals, just like Algore was, and see how much good it did him. Hussein is a young guy, and he would do a much better job of preserving his political viability by serving a few more years in the Senate.

Hussein is a young guy, and he would do a much better job of preserving his political viability by serving a few more years in the Senate.

His modus operandi is to create cultish hysterical following that does not care for any substance (and neither for the consequences). This method has a drawback of being once in lifetime chance; it's now or never. In 2012 he will be laughed out of primaries if he attempts the same style of campaign (and he has nothing else). If he just returns to Senate he might as well forget about his ambition to be US President.

Sport's Illustrated just came out with a gem of an issue on Brett Favre, and his retirement.

We are missing him already in Packerland.

There was a lot of bantering back and forth a few days ago on FR about Brett.

He played for the love of the game, and was exciting to watch. His consecutive games played I don't think will ever be equaled.

Hillary will get her ass whipped again on Tuesday in Mississippi. There is no way she can make much of a dent in Obama's pledged delegate lead of about 140. All she can do is try to create the impression that she is winning by changing the criteria for measuring success.

Now pledged delegates don't matter, it is which states you win and the closeness of the popular vote. Clinton actually trails in the popular vote by more than 600,000 if you subtract MI and FL. If you included FL and not MI [Obama was not on the ballot], she still trails by 300,000.

Hillary points to some of her big state wins like NY and CA, but the truth is that both states will go Dem regardless of who is the nominee. Her "victory" in Texas [a red state] was actually a loss since Obama received more delegates. The Clintons spin and spin but the math doesn't change as the number of primaries grows smaller and the number of available delegates decline.

The Dem Party [read super delegates] must decided if they want to overturn the results at the ballot box and steal the election from the black guy to give it to the Clintons. I don't think the Dems will commit political suicide and alienate its most loyal constituency for this election and many more to come.
