Every four years a relic of a dark period of American history emerges from cryogenic stasis to infuse a bit of radical leftist idiocy into presidential politics. Recently, feminist icon Gloria Steinem charged that misogyny is keeping Sen. Hillary Clinton from becoming the Democratic presidential nominee. Steinem spouted boilerplate gynosupremacist rhetoric at a Texas rally for the New York senator before launching into a rant against Republican Sen. John McCain. The 73-year-old remnant of the bra-burning crowd criticized Americas penchant for choosing veterans to serve as Commander in Chief and ridiculed McCains five-and-a-half years of captivity as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Steinem mockingly asked, "I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I dont think so."
Media reaction was subdued, not because Steinem was an individual instead of a 527 group disparaging the military service of a Vietnam veteran, but as the result of an Old Media double standard that permits scathing attacks of any kind if the target is Republican, conservative or Christian. Steinems vitriolic outburst led me to begin thinking about another liberal gasbag that has yet to comment on this years presidential stakes: Jane Fonda.
In 2004 Fonda led a get-out-the-vote effort on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate and fellow anti-Vietnam War activist John Kerry along with Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler called Vaginas Vote. During an interview that same year on ABCs Good Morning America" the actress expressed a desire to travel across America to speak out against U.S. involvement in Iraq, but conceded her Vietnam War protests left her with "too much baggage" to "do a tour like I did during the Vietnam War, a tour of the country."
I doubt Fondas baggage will constrain her from weighing in on the 2008 election considering that four years after Vaginas Vote American troops are still in Iraq. There is little question about Fondas choice since the Republican candidate has pledged to keep U.S. forces in Iraq as long as necessary if he is elected. Democrats are in the midst of deciding between two contenders competing to determine which one can wave the white flag of surrender faster. Note that Democrats only talk about ending the war in Iraq, never winning the war in Iraq.
Jane Fondas active participation in the debate will expose the energized and coveted youth vote claimed by Democrats to the ugly face of her antiwar ilk and the tragic legacy they inflicted on their own country over 30 years ago. Fonda can stand shoulder to shoulder with Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama while America recalls the classic photograph of Hanoi Jane mounted on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun the same type that shot down the plane of a Lt. Commander John McCain. A generation misled and undereducated by the leftists of the Old Media and academia will be able to learn about the collaboration of Fonda, Kerry and others with the North Vietnamese to undermine the war effort while McCain suffered torture at the hands of his communist captors.
Because the new media universe is significantly different from that of 1972, the sickening truths of a nations betrayal can finally come into view. All it will take is a word from Jane Fonda. Considering her recent appearance on the "Today Show" during which she blurted out a vulgarity that refers to a part of the female anatomy, I would expect that Fonda cannot hold her tongue much longer.

Fonda and Steinem are holdovers from the 60s...and the world has passed them by.
Yet Democrats and the Old Media pay attention to them as if ancient sages revealing pearls of wisdom.
And hillary even makes that distinction very clear when she says we need to "end the war in Iraq, and win the war in Afghanistan".
Great point!
If the point of this article is that these two women are irrelevant relics of the past, it makes a legitimate point.
Of course, if these two women are irrelevant relics of the past, why bother writing the article?
This is such a laugh coming from Steinem. Steinem is one of the worst and vilest misogynists on the face of the planet.
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
“Wither”
I would much rather be represented by someone who has a few kinks but understands that Roe should be overturned, the military needs to be supported, firearm ownership is a right, and that it is a really, really bad idea to open divorce courts and automatic Social Security transfers to homosexual relationships while teaching to public school kids that anal sex is just fine and dandy, than say a happily married professing Baptist like Jimmy Carter.
Argh! Can Admin fix it?
I didn’t know that Iraq and A’stan were ‘different’ wars for the U.S.
I guess the MSM lets Evita gloss over that one.
“Vaginas vote”. Real mature.
Her wikipedia entry doesn't even mention her tenure as a bunny. Another example of wikipedia's lack of honesty and need for editorial help.
Steinem at her peak:

Steinem today (ugh). No wonder Hillary wins the old woman's vote. Can't see any appeal beyond that demographic, however.

McCain is from the same era. If age alone makes you irrelevant then he would be too.
McCain is relevant because he has accomplished something in the last 40 years. We may not like all of the things he has done, but he has been a player all along.
Fonda, OTOH, is living in the past.
I’m sorry, but every time that horrible play “The Vagina Monologues” is mentioned, my mind conjures up some very comical images in the other direction. Would a play called “The Penis Dialogues” receive uncritical, popular attention from the media? You know the answer as well as I do. I also think about how far gone, truly demented is the state of minds of most arch-feminists.
I guess when that hag finally got married a few years ago fish started riding bicycles.
When asked about the Pol Pot slaughter after the Americans left, Jane Fonda the brain surgeon, said something about we shouldn’t have bee there in the first place. She didn’t care about massive amounts of people dying. That guy who spit tobacco juice on her should have done more. I know Vietnam war vets who say they “will break her legs” if they ever see her.
“The Penis Dialogues ROTFLMAO!!!! Would they be.. lengthy?
“The Penis Dialogues” you suggest might not get media attention, but would probably get a grant from the National Endowment (no pun intended, really) for the Arts.
And a couple years into the mariage, the hag’s husband DIED. He’s probably happier where he is.
“Whither”
There was something similar: puppetry of the penis - lower manhattan-show I believe, where the male performers fashioned their penises into various things./Just Asking - seoul62.
I disagree, but respect the right of the moderators to make the decision they think is best for the forum.

I don't think so.

You are correct, however I’m guessing that the author might have been thinking:
with·er
verb (used without object)
1. to shrivel; fade; decay: The grapes had withered on the vine.
2. to lose the freshness of youth, as from age (often fol. by away).
verb (used with object) 3. to make flaccid, shrunken, or dry, as from loss of moisture; cause to lose freshness, bloom, vigor, etc.: The drought withered the buds.
After all, he is talking about Jane Fonda!
I was amazed to find out that Gloria Steinem’s still alive. She has been out of the limelight for so long.
Having seen the recent pictures, I think I’ve figured out why she’s been out of the limelight...
minor point, but IIRC, Senator McCain was shot down by a missile, not an anti-aircraft gun - I can understand the author’s use of hyperbole, but these things are always more effective (IMHO) when they are factually accurate...
