Obama: Sermon on Mount Justifies Same-Sex Unions By Terence P. Jeffrey CNSNews.com Editor in Chief March 03, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told a crowd at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sunday that he believes the Sermon on the Mount justifies his support for legal recognition of same-sex unions. He also told the crowd that his position in favor of legalized abortion does not make him "less Christian."

"I don't think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state," said Obama. "If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans." (See video here) St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans condemns homosexual acts as unnatural and sinful.

Obama's mention of the Sermon on the Mount in justifying legal recognition of same-sex unions may have been a reference to the Golden Rule: "Do to others what you would have them do to you." Or it may have been a reference to another famous line: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

The Sermon, recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, includes the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, an endorsement of scriptural moral commandments ("anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven"), and condemnations of murder, divorce and adultery. It also includes a warning: "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."

Well...according to my interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount, I deserve to be the ruler of the world..../s I’m not a religious person, but I’m pretty sure Jesus didn’t say anything about homosexual unions. I could be wrong....but I don’t think so...

I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount,

I found the part in the Sermon on the Mount that is applicable here. But it is the part about sheep in wolf's clothing.

LOL! Now Barack is getting to specifics, we know where he stands:

1. He’s in favor of adultery (homosexual unions).
2. He’s in favor of murder (abortion).
3. He thinks the Sermon on the mount permits these things, in spite of its instructions not to kill and not to hate, nor to look upon a woman with lust.

Well technically that would be true, being anyone who condones or is in favor of the killing of babies is not a Christian in the first place so it would be impossible to be less Christian.

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." refers to who is saved; humans cannot make that determination for it is God's providence. It is very often used to justify some ultra-liberal malevolent societal change; a phase used to stymie dissent. Of course people must make judgments everyday. It must be the most abused bible quote.

Ahhh but the Sermon on the Mount said nothing about looking upon another man with lust did it...(Kidding)

At least he has to get points for creativity, because I've never heard anyone use the Bible as a basis to support abortion and homosexuality. He should win some sort of prize for that sort of ingenious plan, I just hope the prize isn't the presidency.

You are 100% correct. I am a Christian and have read the Bible cover to cover. Not only can one NOT find any approval of homosexual unions, you will find exactly the opposite in both the old and new testaments.

These liberals treat the Bible the same way they do the Constitution. They claim the Constitution to be “living and breathing”, which is to say, it will mean what I decide it means, not what it says.

The more I hear from him the less I understand him, he certainly doesn’t seem to be a faithful Christian regardless of what he claims but neither does he seem to fit what I would expect of a Muslim Manchurian Candidate. Actually he seems to be just an overconfident clown with a gift for speechifying and very little to say that amounts to anything, yet he is held up as some kind of genius. Am I missing something or is he just the proof that the dumbing down of this country is nearly complete?

Perhaps Obama, being the current Democrat Messiah, knows what Jesus really *meant* to say, since you know, he’s sooooooo close to God and all.

It’s a ridiculous position for him to take, and I cannot believe his handlers let him state this in public, as they have to know that most conservatives, when they got wind of this, will publicize this to no end, and a lot of people, left and right will be turned off by these types of idiotic statements.

The passage in Romans is only obscure because Obama doesn’t read his bible. He is, at best, a Burger King Christian (he’s going to have it his way). And there is nothing about sodomites being married in the Sermon on the Mount.

I can agree with all except the word young, he may be young compared to McCain but he is several years older than JFK was when he ran in 1960 and is of an age when a man should be of mature judgement. Granted we should all keep learning all our lives but he is middle aged by any reasonable definition.

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

Why do people misquote and misuse this scripture as an example of trying to tell people you can not judge others? It's ridiculous!

The scripture doesn't say, DO NOT JUDGE. It only says you will be judged. And Jesus further elaborates to finish this sentence I belive, by stating you will be judged "in the same manner."

All it's really saying is you're going to judged as you judge others, so be careful how you judge people.

You know about that verse (Rom 1:27) and I know about that verse, but it might well be obscure to liberals. The Episcopal Church has not officially read that verse either at Mass or in Morning or Evening Prayer since before 1928. They didn’t miss much of the NT, but they have always stepped around that first chapter of Romans.

The liberals have been adroit as avoiding what they don’t want to know for a lot longer than any of us have been alive.

I suspect he has scarred his thinking to the point of always doing what is right,...in his own eyes.

IMHO, that is one of the most dangerous characteristics in any leader and first one to disqualify him from any position of leadership, let alone Commander-in-Chief.

He has manifest his sense of wherewithal places his own independent thinking ahead of the Word of God.

To phrase this differently, everybody chooses a language of inerrancy. Either they choose the Word of God, or they choose the utterances of their own heart as being inerrant.

He invokes a lot of scripture references and then distorts them into his world view. A world view that he is twisting into a “virtue,” he is literally teaching people about his higher virtues. But people are so disconnected from any kind of moral basis they will accept his philosophy.

For the Obamaniacs: So they’ll bless and follow anyone who gives them justification for not thinking. Anyone who makes a virtue— a highly intellectual virtue— out of what they know to be their sin, their weakness, and their guilt.” —Atlas Shrugged

Just another example of why I will vote for Hillary tomorrow. The double speak of Obama is far more dangerous to the country. It is one of the lessons he seems to have learned very well from his muslim teachers.

Looking at this a different way. In the time of Jesus, they had no such concept as “civil union”, just marriage.

So if there is any support in the Sermon on the Mount for gay marriage, it would be for marriage itself, not some sexual partnership outside of marriage.

Biblically, it was only the act of Marriage itself that provided the right of sexual activity. Not some contract for services (prostitution by another name?).

So even if he was correct about Jesus supporting gays having sex (which is most certainly is not), his position AGAINST Gay Marriage would itself be unbiblical.
