OCALA, Fla. -- A 77-year-old man told a deputy he roughed up his 74-year-old wife because he was upset about the high cost of gas for driving her to and from dialysis treatments, according to police.

Authorities say 77-year-old Richard Close has been charged with aggravated battery and battery on a person over 65.
Authorities said Richard Close was charged with aggravated battery and battery on a person over 65.
Close said that his life turned upside down when doctors in Illinois placed his wife on kidney dialysis.
Over the Christmas holidays, the retired mechanic said his wife of 26 years went to visit her family. During the visit, doctors placed her on dialysis.
Deputies went to the couple's home Thursday night because of an altercation. Close's wife told them that her husband had beaten her up, police said.
It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

What a pitiful excuse. The guy’s probably been beating on her for years. Maybe she’ll wise up and finally leave the worthless POS.
This is an awful story.
Perhaps a touch of Alzheimer’s is involved here?
I’d hate to think he was just this mean.
....sounds like the love is gone from that marriage.....
...aggravated battery and battery on a person over 65.
Once again, a special crime designation. Perhaps they should add ‘assault on a female’. Over 65. On dialysis. And perhaps he did it with hate too.
Every group (except straight white males) has to have special legal protection.
A friend of mine took a beating on gas futures .... but gas prices?
Why don’t you just put her down, fella. Trade her in for a new one that doesn’t need so may repairs.
Awful story. I’d guess that a) he was desperate because he can’t afford rising gas prices on a small fixed income with no margin, and b) as he gets older he is losing his mind.
This reminds me of a neighbor of ours at one time, who was old and crippled, and one day beat up on his wife by hitting her repeatedly with his aluminum walker.
The quarrel started because he had sold his house to his step-son to raise money to live on, and then forgot he had done so and tried to sell it a second time to his son.
He was put away somewhere, and passed on amidst the divorce proceedings.
Get the Prius, dude!
I am leaning towards B
