I believe you're right by saying "designed." It's an old and effective ploy -- L.R. Hubbard used it, for example. I imagine some savvy political operators stuck their fingers in the wind and caught the "spiritual hunger" aspect of the Zeitgeist and said, "This is it. This is the the template."

I was actually walking through Harvard yard in Cambridge, Mass. during the big anti-Vietnam war teach-in which took place in May, 1965 all over the country. It was quite a sight.
