McCain Slams Swiftboat Vets

Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 1:19:32 pm PST

Has anyone ever really shown that the allegations made by the Swift Boat Veterans against John F. Kerry were false? If someone has refuted the charges conclusively, I’ve never seen it—which makes John McCain’s continuing antipathy toward the Swiftboaters inexplicable: McCain Scrambles to Control Backers.

Speaking to reporters aboard his campaign tour bus late Tuesday, McCain acknowledged that conservative independent groups pursuing a similar line to Cunningham’s could be impossible to control.

“I think you have to worry about that, particularly the 527s,” McCain said, referring to the independent advocacy groups that are not subject to contributor limits.

“We’re aware of many of the things that 527s have done ... where unlimited amounts of money can pour into negative campaigns such as we saw against John Kerry and his combat record, as we saw against (former Georgia Sen.) Max Cleland ... they’re really very not accountable to anyone. At least I have to say ‘I’m John McCain and I approve this message.’”

And no, I’m not saying ‘down with McCain’ here. But in this case, I think he’s scoring some cheap political points at the expense of people who don’t deserve the bad rap.

I wouldn’t read too much into a man simply wanting to run a clean campaign.

Hypersensitivity to perceived “insults” is the path to liberalism.

There is an email to Jon Christian Ryter on his website from a man who was in the Swift Boats in Vietnam, and served with John Kerry. He backs up the SwiftBoatVeterans against John Kerry. Go to: http://www.jonchristianryter.com

You have to remember that McCain is a friend of John Kerry.

which makes John McCain’s continuing antipathy toward the Swiftboaters inexplicable:

Why is McCain sliming veterans who came forward and told the truth about a man who told harmful lies about then before congress then? That is not now and has never been running a clean campaign.

I think Mr. McCain would get a lot more votes if he kept his mouth shut and stayed home and played scrabble and drank green tea for the rest of this campaign season.

NO.

McCain has explained his antipathy to the Swiftees on grounds that he believes it wrong to attack someone's combat record. He allows that Kerry's anti-war activities were fair game.

I don't agree with him at all. If someone has falsified his combat record, I see no obligation to remain silent.

Thanks to McCain, we have 527’s. Now they’re evil?

This guy is dumber than I thought.

He would rather stand with his lying traitorous friend Kerry, than with honorable fellow Vietnam War veterans who called Kerry to accountability.

No surprise—he and Kerry turned their back on the left behind Vietnam POW/MIAs in 1993 and dissed their families.

Okay, as a Viet Nam vet I'll say it, "down with McCain."

For crying out loud, the moron helps draft creates 527's with the idiodic McCain-Feingold bill and then complains.

I was, and continue to be, proud to stand with the Swift Boat Veterans, and will always believe that we made the difference in keeping John Kerry out of the White House.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder if we need to reconvene the Swifties to keep McCain out as well.

I was also stationed at An Thoi and left 2-3 weeks before the idiot skerry 'reported for duty'. While I wasn't on any of the patrols in question with him, I've met personally and talked with most who were at the Swift Boat Sailors reunion last May. There is no doubt that the idiot Kerry is a lying sack of cr*p. None of their statements about Kerry has been disproved and Kerry quietly passed up any opportunity to sue. When that idiot O'Reilly and McVain spew crap about brave and honorable men, I boil. And Southack, none of us have thin skins.

There are a lot of Vietnam Veterans who don’t hold John McCain in very high esteem, especially Navy pilots who served in the same time period as McCain. McCain doesn’t want to be swiftboated.

You may be correct. The problem is that McCain consistently attacks/belittles/criticizes the right (pun intended) people and sides with the wrong people. I believe it is a basic character flaw in the man.

You're right Eva. While I was not a Navy pilot, I was a radioman in the Navy at the same time as McCain. In fact, I served aboard the same aircraft carrier he flew from when he crashed his plane in Viet Nam, the USS Oriskay (CVA 34).

I respect his POW status, along with the thousands of others who were held against their will. It is what he has done since he was a POW that troubles me and many other Viet Nam vets.

they’re really very not accountable to anyone

The Swift Boat Vets were accountable to us, the citizens of the United States, unlike politicians who are accountable to Soros.

The vets I saw and heard at the "Kerry Lied" rally in D.C. in 2004 were telling the truth. I'd vote for John O'Neill over John McCain any day.

The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth wasn’t some dirty trick concocted by professional partisans. When John Kerry chose to make his four months—including 30 days training at Cam Rhan—in Vietnam as the cornerstone of his campaign, these people came forward. Kerry’s campaign rhetoric and his official biography were full of distortions, lies and slander. The Swift Boat Veterans were boycotted by the news media until their best-selling book, “Unfit for Command,” created a stir the media could no longer ignore. The Swift Boat Veterans not only represented their immediate comrades, dead and alive, they spoke for the majority of all Vietnam veterans. Their courage and tenacity in the face of a viciously partisan and hostile press helped unite millions of veterans into a decisive voting bloc. God bless them all.

I met a man at our caucus who was a Navy pilot at that time, who hated McCain so much that he couldn’t even say his name. One of my neighbors was in McCain’s class at Annapolis. The story about bumping a pilot isn’t exactly true. They asked for volunteers to train on a different aircraft. My neighbor raised his hand because he was happy to fly something else.

“It was Republican McCain who called Sampley ‘one of the most despicable people I have ever had the misfortune to encounter’ and said ‘Sampley has a nose for publicity and knack for making money from invented controversies’
*** I think that this is the key to McCain’s denunciation of The Swiftboaters. He had been dogged by Samplely for years with this type of vacuous crap. Kerry had been Sampley’s second target. Samply had tried to align himself with the Swiftboaters and implied that he had a leadership role there. McCain looked at the Swifties and saw Sampley or similar.

He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Did you know that not a single member of McCain’s flight class made it out of Vietnam, except McCain? I have to wonder if the information that McCain gave the enemy in exchange for medical treatment, had anything to do with that. It could have been, as my neighbor suggested, just a bad plane.
