History Channel - The Universe - Before the Big Bang
February 25, 2008 | Chuck Plante - aka backtothestreets

Posted on 02/25/2008 1:30:39 PM PST by backtothestreets

Heads up! Tomorrow night (February 26, 2008 at 9:00 PM), the History Channel will air a new segment of their Universe series that could be very interesting. It will try to address what was before the Big Bang. This is a subject I don't see anyway of discussing without raising religious beliefs.

TOPICS: Culture/Society; Editorial; News/Current Events; Philosophy

Because religion does carry significant political weight in our society and elections, I thought it appropriate to list this under News/Activism.

I will watch...some scientists theorize that the universe has been expanding and contracting for eons. Interesting stuff, religious implications aside.

“This is a subject I don’t see anyway of discussing without raising religious beliefs.”

This is the media we’re talking about. Of course they will find ways to discuss it without religious beliefs. They might have the guts to mention God, but I suspect that the fact that they reference the Big Bang means that its primarily going to be about cosmology. They’ll probably focus on two theories: 1) the ocillating universe theory, adn 2) the notion that there was nothing before the Big Bang, ie. time simply began at that point, and there was nothing before it.

You wonder why it’s on the History Channel, though.

Before the big bang the universe was in a marble played with by gigantic beings with sucker fingers. Haven’t any of you seen “Men in Black?”

It has been a good series and yes this will be interesting. I’m not going to hold my breath expecting them to honor our Creator. I do expect a lot of multi dimensional string theory theories postulated.

Some people see science and religion as mutually exclusive things. I don't share that view. As far as I'm concerned, the Almighty unquestionably created the heavens and the Earth. All science is trying to do is figure out how He did it.

Unfortunately, the History Channel seems to be going the way of sensational crapola to compete with reality tv. They’re starting a new series about what amounts to Ultimate Fighting Championship...how sad.

Or they’ll throw in references to religion and then debunk it or slight it or make fun of it. The truth is that the Universe before the bang is so long ago it’s irrelevant.

The Universe was just like it is now then, .............there was a big bang.

We’re probably WAY overdue for another.

Please don’t tell me this show will take away from Ice Road Truck Drivers or the search for Big Foot? I mean if the History channel starts looking into the origins of the Universe, how on Earth can we track Bigfoot?

I guess I will have to turn the Weekly World News.

I will watch...some scientists theorize that the universe has been expanding and contracting for eons.

This expansion and contraction is not purely harmonic. Each successive expansion reaches farther while each successive contraction fails to replicate the original mass by a greater magnitude. This means that there is a beginning that cannot be replicated - ever.

LOL - Quick!

On a serious note: I looked up the program description and it is;

Exploring the myths and mysteries of the universe. Included: the possibility of life on Mars; time travel; the theory of a dark star that’s a companion to our sun. Also: the big bang theory.

Doesn’t look there will be much about the BB but I’ll watch. This has been an outstanding series.

Nothing happened before the big bang, as the big bang was a singualirty where matter, time, and space were created.

What was there before the ‘big bang?’ A very interesting philosophical and scientific question, to be sure! Scientists will demur, saying that only with the ‘big bang’ does science actually begin. Everything and anything prior to that is not in the realm of science. But it is in the realm of our thought. Surely, there was a ‘something’ before the ‘big bang.’ If not, are we real or are we illusion? Quantum physics has raised far more questions than it has answered, but one extrapolation of quantum findings might suggest that there is no definable difference between what exists and what does not. If that should be the case, what are we? — men who dream of being butterflies, or butterflies dreaming ourselves to be men? And, if either, where and why?

At the level of the pre big bang, there is no
human empirical science, no observers, no humans.
So everything mankind says about that epoch is
purely speculative. All comments will not be based
on any type of western scientific evidence.

Since no human was there.

P.S. since we cannot really determine where and how
fast the subatomic phenomena are at the same time
(Heisenberg, y’now)...
how do you think we can figure out what happened
before there was “physics”?

If you believe in probability and wave functions,
try it at the crap table some night in Vegas...

the notion that there was nothing before the Big Bang, ie. time simply began at that point, and there was nothing before it.

Time along could not have created the universe. Matter and energy would be needed for time to work its magic. Oh, and a few rules for that matter and energy and time to get things done.

What I''d like to see, after the program tomorrow airs, is for the History Channel and cosmic theorists and religious theologians to get together and create a program theorizing and debating what came not just before the big bang, but before the "marble" that was used to create the big bang. In other words, when there was absolutely "nothing"; that would be before the "big bang marble", and before time and before space itself. If we're going to discuss the beginning of the universe, then we need to discuss what created even the "pre-universe marble".

I was just going to post a similar line from the book STRANGE MATTERS which I read a few weeks ago. Under some models of the universe, you don’t get a “before time” or “before the universe”. It dosn’t make sense to us, because it’s outside of our experience, but so is a time where the four fundamental forces of the universe (electromagnetism, gravity, and strong and weak nuclear forces) were one unified force. It’s beyond our senses, and the only way anyone can imagine it is through the math.

The theory I heard was that a universe is created when a black hole explodes.

Our universe has lots of black holes because of evolutions: those universes which have lots of black holes will spawn more universes which will be similar to them.

When a black hole explodes, there is no telling exactly what will happen. So there could be lots of different universe out there with different basic constants, etc.

The ultimate evolutionary theory

Surely, there was a ‘something’ before the ‘big bang.’

The problem is that time itself was created in the big bang along with space. So there was no "before" to come before time was created. It's like asking what were your thoughts before your dad's sperm inseminated your mom's egg. There wasn't yet a "you" there to have thoughts. There was no time before the big bang created time-space.
