1972 All Over Again

Forget all the pundit chatter about post-partisanship, maverick candidates, and New Media driven campaigns. The 2008 presidential race is shaping up to be a nice old-fashioned race between a conservative and a liberal, indeed an ultra-liberal who makes the conservative seems more conservative with each passing day.
On the Democratic side, Barack Obama is pulling away to victory. In perhaps her final contribution to Republican solidarity Hillary Clinton called Obama's bluff and did the GOP a great service. By ridiculing his empty rhetoric and messianic style of politics, Clinton forced Obama to show his hand.
After his victory last week in Wisconsin and again at the Austin debate, Obama revealed himself to be the most liberal candidate since George McGovern. He is not thrilled with building a border fence. He wants to meet with Raul Castro. He will raise taxes and spend a boatload of money on new programs. He will exit Iraq pronto and spend that money on domestic programs. He opposes any restriction on partial birth abortion and thinks the District of Columbia's total handgun ban is a "common sense" regulation.
This is no "third way" and, other than a few rhetorical flourishes, there is no sign of "reaching across the aisle."
By comparison, John McCain is running as a conventional conservative. He at least is interested in border security first. He has offered a no-new-taxes position. He will stay in Iraq as long as needed to achieve a stable, functioning state which does not harbor terrorists. He will appoint conservative judges. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Second Amendment by signing on to the Congressional amicus brief to the Supreme Court urging the District of Columbia handgun ban be struck down....

I see three liberals. I see a John McCain who gets an F- on gun issues from Gun Owners of America; who is committed to silencing Congressional critics during election campaigns; who wants amnesty granted to tens of millions of illegals. So how is this 1972 again?
Who is the conservative that they are talking about?
Where’s Barack Buddy Brother Farrah Con Man?
Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Ok so he is slightly better than comrade obama, but cmon, lets not pile the BS higher than it needs to be piled.....
So how is this 1972 again?
You’re forgetting about his pandering to the enviro-kooks with his “cap-and-trade” program. Oh, and I almost forgot: He doesn’t like torturing a terrorist even if it could prevent a major, imminent attack. I really do want to like John McCain. Unfortunately, his lefty tendencies make him awfully hard to admire.
Nixon circa 1972 opened up Red China, founded the EPA, and pulled the U.S. out of Vietnam.
Not exactly conservative compared to Barry Goldwater circa 1964...
HYPNOBOMA is so far left—— He’s left handed.
Correction: Waterboarding & sleep deprivation are not torture. Our boys and girls go through that, and worse, during SERE training.
The R’s may win but I doubt it will be a landslide.
The only way he can run as a conservative is to run AWAY from himself and all he has actually done over the past 20 years!
I remember 1972 very well. I fail to see very many (if any) similarities.
Don't forget wage and price controls.
It's so easy a caveman could do it! LOL!
On these threads, I'm always glad to see a guy like you show up, Senator!
No. He sloughed that off onto Gerald R. Ford and his V.P. Nelson D. Rockefeller. Congress cut off all the money and hog-tied ol Gerry Ford on a date that will live in ignomy!!!
I tend to agree with you. The line between “aggressive interrogation” and “torture” is a blurry one, but if we do actually torture someone who meets the criteria above (i.e. has knowledge of an large, imminent attack), why is that objectionable? The argument that we are “becoming like them” is ludicrous. They torture to politically humiliate/intimidate; we do so to save lives.
Excellent point and so true.
F- from GOA, C from NRA. Why doesn’t the NRA count?
And you know Barack and Hilary would never sign the congressional amicus brief urging that the handgun ban be lifted.
McCain isn’t all we 2nd amendment fans want, but he’s not rabid anti-gun either. H. and O. are.
1972 - Richard Nixon - off the top of my head - wage and price controls, National Public Radio, Environmental Protection Agency, racial quotas, the Berger Supreme Court, larger domestic spending increases than LBJ, detente with totalitarian regimes in China and USSR.....
2008 - John McCain - off the top of my head - global warming mandates, open borders and amnesty, anti-Bush tax cuts, blocked Conservative judges with Demo help, government financed election campaigns, viciously and publicly attacks Conservatives using Demo Party attack language.
Don’t you think Obama and McGovern have similarities?
Failure to see is not an option.
It is my understanding the Democrats initiated “Super Delegates” in response to #1 Senator “Kook” McGovern’s failed candidacy against Nixon, and #2 “Kook” Carter’s failed Presidency. “Super Delegates provide the Party more control over whom runs on their ticket. After those two “Kooks” the Dems wanted no more.
I’d s’pose Obama will be attacked as a “Kook” in an empty suit sooner than later, actually deluged with such attacks, and probably sourced to his own Party.
Perhaps that is what the Clinton’s are banking on, because those “Super Delegates” cannot simply override the locked in delegates if they are overwhelmingly in Obama’s court. It would probably create one “H” of a racial issue. The Dems will need to knock him down first to change the delegate backing he now has.
Well it’s just a thought, but will be interesting to see what happens.
I only use the word snarky because the lefties understand it, it has been a word in my personal vocabulary.
“HYPNOBOMA is so far left Hes left handed.”
John McCain is left handed too . . . I wonder what that says . . .
Some, yes. Not all that much though. Well, other than they both are socialist idiots.
I certainly fail to see similarities between Nixon and McCain.
I voted for Nixon both times and didn't think a second about it.
I cannot say that for McCain.
Not saying I won't vote for him. I'll wait and see. Still in all I'm not comfortable with it.
It's always that way. Some folks just like to read their own snarky posts. I only use the word snarky because the lefties understand it, it has NEVER been a word in my personal vocabulary.
Sheesh, I hate when I leave a word out! :)
So if Obama is McGovern, then McCain would definitely have to be Nixon. Yes, I have to admit I see the similarities.
If Obama is McGovern, then Hillary is Muskie. Muskie was also the pre-primary frontrunner, but he seems to have been an honorable man, so he was completely unlike the Clintons.
You'll vote for McCain unless you just don't give a hoot, which I doubt.
Jennifer Rubin must be doing some good old fashioned 1972 acid.
Not completely, all three can weep on cue.
Thank you. I have a close friend who in “Army games” in the Swiss army, received numerous cigarette burns on his arms (permanent scars now) during the elicitation of confessions (he would not confess). How is that any less “torture” than waterboarding?
McCain took an oath to defend the Constitution.
He then proceeded to turn the First Amendment into toilet paper with his signature legislation.
Sorry, I don’t vote for liberals and traitors.
I'm not singing the praises of John McCain either, but I will vote for him.
I think they mean McNuts, whose ACU rating has been sinking like the Titanic.
