Obama once visited '60s 'terrorists' By: Ben Smith February 22, 2008 06:15 AM EST

In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

While Ayers and Dohrn may be thought of in Hyde Park as local activists, they’re better known nationally as two of the most notorious – and unrepentant — figures from the violent fringe of the 1960s anti-war movement.

Now, as Obama runs for president, what two guests recall as an unremarkable gathering on the road to a minor elected office stands as a symbol of how swiftly he has risen from the Hyde Park left to a man closing in fast on the Democratic nomination for president.

“I can remember being one of a small group of people who came to Bill Ayers’ house to learn that Alice Palmer was stepping down from the senate and running for Congress,” said Dr. Quentin Young, a prominent Chicago physician and advocate for single-payer health care, of the informal gathering at the home of Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn. “[Palmer] identified him as her successor.”

Obama and Palmer “were both there,” he said.

Obama’s connections to Ayers and Dorhn have been noted in some fleeting news coverage in the past. But the visit by Obama to their home—part of a campaign courtship—reflects more extensive interaction than has previously reported.

Neither Ayers nor the Obama campaign would describe the relationship between the two men. Dr. Young described Obama and Ayers as “friends,”

Ayers is unrepentant regarding the deaths and Ddorhan was in the NYC bomb factory townhouse that exploded. Those bombs were being built to use at a dance at Fort Dix. Had they not exploded prematurely, they would have killed hundreds.

Maybe MSNBC was trying to tell us something a few days ago.

"Ayers and Dorhn" as in "violent leftist lunatics."

These two are only leftist "leaders" if you mean that to say "leftist leaders of the violent and lunatic Weathermen."

Senator Obama certainly is letting his true colors fly early.

H! was all about supporting the Black Panthers while at Yale. McCain is all about opening the southern border. So what? They are all BAD. Write up the impeachment papers and fill in the name in early November 2008.

I recently read a book titled The Destructive Generation by Peter Collier, which is an insider documentary on the activities of Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, and other rabid anti-USA activists. Their efforts were stated in anti-war terms, but their true goal was the defeat of USA. I strongly recommend the book; it was an eye opener for me.

William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn: Why are these Nazi Traitors not in jail for helping to kill thousands of Americans?

I think both are direct descendants of Hitler and Stalin and should not be allowed to roam free in this great Nation.

“Is this all the Hillary campaign can dig up?”

No kidding. Considering the pardons of the Puerto Rican terrorists when she was running for Senate, she’s on thin ice with this if it’s her releasing this info.

You have to understand (from a Chicago perspective) the important words in the article are Hyde Park.

That's the home terf of the Univ of Chicago and 'leftists' (commies) by the dozens. It was and still is racially mixed. Used to be heavily Jewish, I 'think' a few remain.

So Obama being there for support isn't a shock.

(That area also has the Museum of Science and Industry - a great place for kids especially boys, it's eye popping with gadgets, and the U-505.)

I think Dohrn is currently professor at Northwestern and adjunct at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Crime pays, if it’s sufficiently large and evil.

They once scheduled a speech by George Lincoln Rockwell. Got moved from one venue to another because of a bomb threat.

It was a freeze-Hillary's-mammary weather. I was among the many demonstrators frostbitten on that fair eve.

The last time I was on the Univ Campus was for the final meeting on the 'new' George Mitchell Hospital. (I was a Project Manager for a Subcontractor)

Oh yes - I’ve seen these two leftist scum on TV and movies. They make one’s skin crawl with their smarmy self satisfied smugness. You get the usual “our intentions were right, but our tactics were a bit misguided” BS and then typically a “F Bush” thrown in for good measure.

I’m not surprised Osama is hanging around with these two.

I think the first time I went to the museum was as a kid in 1956. Loved all those things from 'days gone by' and the planes hung from the ceiling. The Stuka was my favorite, one heck of a plane. And that 'toy railroad' was every boys dream.

The last time was like with the U of C, as a Project Manager. 'We' were building the Henry Crown Space Center, and the Imax Theater. I was all the way up to the top of that dome on scaffolding with our Super over a problem that came up. It is a looooong way down. But not too big of a deal after going up 56 Stories in one of those 'caged' outside the building Man Hoists.
[but the 1st time I went in one, and only for 19 stories was .. 'interesting' :-) ]

Sometime I’ll have to tell you the story about hanging over the edge of the Hancock Center roof to get a photograph down to the street.

Around 1997 or so I heard Bernadine Dohrn give a vehemently anti- (Bill) Clinton speech. From a left perspective, of course. Then came Monica.
