Steven Kazmierczak had been taking three drugs prescribed for him by his psychiatrist, the Northern Illinois University gunman's girlfriend told CNN.
Jessica Baty said Steven Kazmierczak was irritable but not erratic before his shooting rampage.
Jessica Baty said Tuesday that her boyfriend of two years had been taking Xanax, used to treat anxiety, and Ambien, a sleep agent, as well as the antidepressant Prozac.
Baty said the psychiatrist prescribed the medications, a fact that made her so "nervous" that she tried to persuade Kazmierczak to stop taking one of the drugs.

..you know....to stop him from acting like a boy.....
AMBIEN! You’ve heard me before, but I’ll say it again: DON”T TAKE AMBIEN! Ask your doctor for something else. I almost burnt down my house cuz of that drug!
Three very serious drugs mixed in an anguished mind in unknown ratios and quantities.
Hmmmm.
Smiling raindrops and magical butterflies wouldn't mass-murder people with a shotgun, would they?!
Oh, someone hold me!
That was “normal” when I was in grade school, back in the 50s. Now, we’d all be drugged beyond belief.
Xanax and Ambien are sedatives, but sometimes they cause a paradoxical excitement. This is especially true if they are taken recreationally in larger dosages than prescribed.
The Prozac has been implicated in a few vulnerable individuals developing a mania. This is more likely in individuals diagnosed with a bipolar disorder-depressed.
Recipe for disaster, destruction and death.
Jack Nicholson has been quoted as saying:
I warned him (Keith Ledger) about Ambien. I took it once and somebody called me in the middle of the night and I woke up in my car 50 yards from my house. I almost drove off a cliff. I didnt know where I was. Ambien can get you. Not through excessive use, its just some people react more strongly than others.
Why do you think God gave us beer?
After reading about those three on Google, I can’t even imagine a doc prescribing that toxic cocktail. Insane!
To prove that He loves us and wants us to be happy.
What other drugs will affect Ambien?
Before taking Ambien, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
antidepressants such as imipramine (Janimine, Tofranil), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), or sertraline (Zoloft);
If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use this medication
I subscribe to a magazine called SALVO (www.salvomag.com). It's very anti-PC. It runs fake advertisements that ridicule things that deserve ridicule.
The current issue has an "ad" on the back cover that reads:
Does your son act too much like a little boy?
Does he have trouble listening or have a puerile sense of humor?
Is he easily distracted?
Does he have a propensity to get dirty?
Does he enjoy playing with violent toys?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then it might be time to medicate your son.
E-MASQL8 Plus
A cure for the common boy.
Well, the obvious answer is more gun control.
I have a good friend who’s a cop. He’s told me stories about stopping cars in which the driver was “sleep-driving!” One guy was nekid! Always AMBIEN involved. I kept wakin’ up in the morning and finding the remains of a meal. One night I put chicken on to fry, then stretched out in front of the tv. The tv wasn’t on, but I guess I was watchin’ something! Woke up when the smoke reached me on the floor. I used to sleepwalk as a kid. AMBIEN reawakened my sleepwalking in a most dangerous way. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!
I used to drink before sleeping, but after the alcohol wore-off, I’d wake-up. That sucked at 2am!
lol. Green tea coming out of my nose. Yuk.
Just opening the door and coming home from school is enough to literally destroy any semblance of clean and orderliness in ... ohhh .... sayyyyy .... 5 minutes.
His room is a disaster ... I emptied it the other day ... took the bed down and everything ... cleaned walls, vacumned etc. ... (just about the most amazingly fine job a single dad has ever done in human history!)
The other day ... remember that .... I'm trying to.
His room is ankle deep in clothes, prncil shavings, discarded drawings .. etc.
Bless his heart, he don't stop from the time he opens his eyes until the time he passes out (yes ... he refuses sleep)
But he gets up ... does his life thing with vigor ... and by God!, he'll be a man to be reckoned with someday.
What did they talk about?
Sounds like our tent at Scout Summer Camp, back in the late-50s. We knew where everything was, but as soon as we were ordered (at gunpoint) to clean it, we lost track of it all! All kinds of critters scurried for their lives when the cleaning commenced!
Back in the day.
I’m not sure I’d want to know “those details”, knarf.
Back about nine or ten years ago I was dealing with cancer and other problems, and my doctor put me on Zoloft. I got so peaceful and pleasant I couldn’t stand myself. I quit taking them without any serious effects, but wouldn’t recommend it. Any time there is a murder suicide, the first thing to look for is antidepressants. The problem seems to start when people quit taking them without tapering off..
well that means you didnt dance enough
Did you stop to think that maybe the drugs were doing their job ~ keeping him from murdering people, and stopping the drugs led to the murders.
I'm thinking that for some cases we need to eliminate outpatient treatment and move these guys behind walls.
I lost a day of my life due to Ambien, and could have lost my job. I was falling on my desk on the day we met our new manager. I don’t remember much that happened.
4%
That would be an ugly sight...
Yes I did stop to think of that.
The Luddite whispering campaigns against SSRIs irritate me to no end.
Sage advice.
Well, I didn't do that and took them all at once. Something in there was making me sick. Swelling in my mouth, choking sensations, stomach ache, etc.
Since this stuff is not regulated there's no notice anywhere on "side-effects".
Long story short ~ I just discovered yesterday that it was the "rose berries" that had been ground up and processed for the vitamin C pills. They have the same nasty chemistry that apple and peach skins do that gives me welts in the mouth and an upset stomach.
Probably a full 1/2 of 1% of the population has some reaction like that ~ but no one cares, and when it happens, I don't go out and kill a bunch of people.
With drugs you must always be more careful because even if almost everyone else is "equal" in terms of their reaction you may be the 1 odd guy out ~ a veritable cornucopia of neuroses, anxieties and maniacal madness ready to leap out and do nasty stuff.
Ambien, the scariest drug I have ever taken!
I know for a fact that coming off of prozac can make some folks pretty crazy....
Possibility of a sleepwalker?
Are sleepwalkers capable of hiding stuff and finding it while sleepwalking next time?
ping
I'm thinking that they probably have their place in the treatment regimens, but abrupt withdrawl is what triggers the violent reactions, and shootings.
Quite a few years ago my doctor prescribed Zyban for me to help me quit smoking. We had no insurance coverage at the time and it was a fortune. I took it one day and I stopped. I was never so screwed up in my life. I’ll take the cigarettes over that anyday.
I meant no prescription coverage.
I’ve heard of similar reactions from several others, like Zoloft, as well. It’s the abrupt ending of it, which seems to be responsible for the violent behavior in some people.
See my post #38, pls.
Savage is wrong and, by the way, also an ass.
I'm thinking that they probably have their place in the treatment regimens, but abrupt withdrawal is what triggers the violent reactions, and shootings.
That has not been established.
Thanks for providing such a trenchant example of the Luddite attitudes I mentioned above.
All that's happening is Prozac, et al, are zonking them just a tad and keeping them quiet, and then they get antsy (as their problem progresses), quit the drug and now we have the full blown crazy guy we would have seen develop slowly over several months rather than over night.
I have taken all three, Xanax, Zoloft and Ambien without any problems at all. Trying to get off the Zoloft now after many years. The side effects from withdrawal are awful. Xanax when used properly is a great drug for dealing with anxiety. As with anything, moderation and knowing your own body make a big difference.
You are correct...
Bring back the asylums and institutions? I’d second that after seeing so many wacko and violent ‘homeless street people’ in the major cities, over the years I traveled on business.
I can take cold remedies - like Nyquil . It seems that a week or two after stopping, I get the most horrific nightmares that are surrealisticly bizarre and summon up so much angst that when I recall they months later, they are still chilling.
“I have taken all three, Xanax, Zoloft and Ambien without any problems at all”
At the same time? Or at different times?
I couldn't agree more.
“...I get the most horrific nightmares that are surrealisticly bizarre and summon up so much angst that when I recall they months later, they are still chilling.”
You know my ex, too?
