UC Police remove supplies from tree-sitters platforms at Memorial Stadium (Berkeley)

BERKELEY - Two men climbed into trees at the University of California, Berkeley oak grove this morning and tossed down supplies used by tree sitters, a grove spokesman said early Tuesday. The tree sitters themselves had not been removed by 8 a.m.

Doug Buckwald, who has been involved with the tree sit since it started in December 2006, said two men climbed into an oak tree and a redwood tree and tossed food, water and other supplies used by tree sitters onto the ground. It was not immediately clear if ropes and pullies were being cut as well. The tree sitters yelled "extraction, extraction" as the goods fell to the ground at least 40 feet below, Buckwald said.

A group of people have been living in the trees for more than a year to protest the university's plan to build a $125 million sports training center on the site. The plan is tied up in court and a decision on three lawsuits - including one from Save the Oaks and one from the City of Berkeley - isn't expected until at least late spring or early summer.

The university has promised to plant three trees for every tree that is removed but tree sitters and their supporters are against that idea because they say many of the existing trees are old and mature.

The university over the last few months has put up two chain-link fences to prevent people from going in and out of the tree grove but tree sitters have set up an elaborate rope and pulley system to get food, water and other supplies into the grove.

A UC Berkeley spokesman was not immediately available for comment this morning.

Symptomatic of the craziness in that area. Why don't the police just arrest these idiots for trespassing?

I wonder how the tree sitters feel about human euthanasia.

The tree sitters yelled "extraction, extraction"

I wonder what they would yell if you pulled their head out of their butt.

The tree sitters must be wondering what they’re doing up a tree; when the good times are happening down by the USMC recruiting center.

Did these idiots even ASK the trees if it was okay to sit in them? They need to be arrested and charged with ass-ault. After all, trees have rights, too you know.

A group of people have been living in the trees for more than a year

And where does all the feces and urine land? On the tree. Disgusting.

These apes are living in trees, as a form of protest. They presumably do not descend to ground level for the duration of said protest.

Some Questions:

Do they simply "void" up there in the tree? Is there an accumulation of "hippie guano" at the base of the tree? Do their "friends" on the outside send them empty buckets, for later retrieval when full?

One can only wonder why the sitters didn’t attack the interlopers and save their food?

One wonders who were the interlopers?

Is the platform public property? could I be an interloper. Would it violate any law?

Liberal thinking:

Save trees and kill unborn children.

Coincidentally, I just happened to have some business there in the area about 4 days ago and took a walk on the back side of campus up Grizzy Peak while I was there. Unbeknownst to the hippies down below, I found this "tree murder" site up at the peak complete with an axe throwing target that was obviously used by University personnel. That was good for a chuckle.

A 55 gallon drum of Round Up at the base of the tree will take care of this problem.

Just strip the bark off the trees and let the tree sitters protect their “dead” trees.

Obviously, these tree sitters feel as one with the trees..
They wish to save or share their fate...
I can live with that, if they can..

The tree sitters are opposed to the trees being cut down to make way for construction..
So don’t cut down the trees....
HONOR the wishes of the tree sitters..

Burn the trees down..

Set small fires at the base of the trees and let the sitters decide..

I was thinking the sound of a freshly fired up chainsaw. It makes one heck of a noise that can not be mistaken for anything else...

I have a simpler idea: inform the “tree sitters” that the trees they are in will be cut down in 10 minutes, with or without them......... see if they really have the courage of their nutjob convictions and start the landclearing at the same time!!!

Aren’t Berkeley police mandated to make protection of lefty protestors their #1 priority?

Could the university and possibly the city itself be getting nervous about the possibility of a dry government tit?

Better yet, build paint ball gun stands and combine with a fund raiser to help pay the cost of dealing with nuts.

$5 for 20 shots.

Heck, if this was in Texas they might even pay for the new building before they were gone.
