Shoot the sucker down any place they want to. Who cares what the enemies of this country say?

Ah yes, FreeRepublic, home of the Armchair Napoleon. You show 'em, cowboy!

What if they miss the satellite and shoot down the moon by accident? The political repercussions would be enormous!

Maybe they can broadcast it on either the internet or tv.
Granted there may not be much to watch but I’d watch it.

As for putting out a NOTAM we have been doing that for international treaties & besides we might hit a “friendly” and cause more problems.

Agreed. I’m crossing fingers-n-toes for a hit.

Howsoever...I think what’s going to happen is what always happens.

Everyone will spin everything that does happen through their own preconceived notions.

All of the anti-ABM folks have always had a two tier shield:

(a) Missile Defense can’t work because it’s easily defeated
-and-
(b) if it does work then it is destabilizing, and will cause an offensive buildup to overcome it.

To be fair, pro-ABM forces (me incl) also have a backup:

(a) A good defense is more sane and peaceful than a doomsday offense
-and-
(b) If it doesn’t work yet, American technology can make it work someday.

If they get a solid hit the energy release should be obvious as a flash of light. It it happens at night.

That would be a blessing. That damned moon has been getting single men in trouble for years! It makes women too attractive!

It is about time somebody wasted it.

What happens, probably, is that they'll fire more than one missile, so that they have a second or third chance.

The advantage here is that they will be able to precisely target this launch, so that midcourse corrections will probably be small. In most respects it's probably an easier intercept than for a ballistic missile.

A miss on this will make us a laughingstock and harm our image globally in a number of ways, and the repercussions of the journalism that follows alone will erode our esteem. I hope to god we’re not setting ourselves up here ...

I don't want to say "never," but the Aegis and SM3 system has had a number of successful "tests" of this very same scenario. If you believe the press clippings, we've done well at this before, so there's a reasonably probability we can again.

Granted, this is "real," so you never know what can happen.

Hitting the moon would be better than hitting Uranus.

Ba-dum-bah!!

Well the target is heavier and slower and you’re right, it oughtta be a no-brainer.

But all it takes is something stupid, like the kill vehicle not seperating or some motor not firing or Lordy knows what and the whole CONCEPT of the system will get tarred and feathered.

That’s what’s wrong with popular science (not the mag) these days.

A single experiement, sample size of one, is used by both sides as proof or disproving a concept.

We’ve been trained by “new study proves link” too many times.
