I don’t disagree with your view. However, all nations follow rocket firing protocols, and they announce to all ships at sea that they are test firing a rocket or missile, and they set up shipping exclusion zones.

A miss on this will make us a laughingstock and harm our image globally in a number of ways, and the repercussions of the journalism that follows alone will erode our esteem. I hope to god we’re not setting ourselves up here ...

Shoot the sucker down any place they want to. You probably shouldn't be allowed to shoot a gun unsupervised.

I hope to god were not setting ourselves up here ... As was pointed out on Fox and Friends this morning, a miss should shut up Russia regarding the ABMs being set up in Eastern Europe.

Could they shoot it down over Berkeley and let the remnants fall where they may?

How can anyone doubt the greatest military on the planet? I can't imagine how anyone who has ever been a member of said military, or who has ever worked closely and extensively with it, could not feel at least a little trepidation about the upcoming exercise ...
On the one hand, the Navy seems awfully confident. And it ain't bragging if you can back it up.
On the other hand ... I'll feel a lot better after the thing has been blasted.

Our morale and self-esteem are not so flimsy that a miss matters. Practice makes perfect.

A miss on this will make us a laughingstock It's pretty bold, but that doesn't imply that it's equally risky.
In the first place, the spy-sat doesn't work, and everyone knows it.
I don't think anyone questions our ability to launch spy-sats because of that.
So at the high-levels of Chinese, Russian, etc military, I think this is just another test/demo of one element of one system (Raytheon vs. Boeing vs. Lockheed , NMD in alaska, PAC-3, THAAD etc).
Obviously, on a public PR and perhaps funding level, it's a whole different story.
But what about funding? If we miss, won't the brass just argue for more development on different systems, etc etc?
If they hit it, might some senators say "aha, we don't need more research?" I dunno. Interesting times.

Miss, and the MSM will blather endlessly about the failed, money-wasting "star wars" program on which the never-to-be-sufficiently-damned BOOOOOoooosh wasted precious resources that could have been spent on poor CHILL'run.
Hit, and the MSM will blather endlessly (but not so loudly) about how the never-to-be-sufficiently-damned BOOOOOoooosh is an aggressive "cowboy", threatening the poor defenseless Russians (or somebody) with destabilization, and recklessly risking global thermonuclar war.
Of the two, I'd prefer the latter.

It’s a roughly oval area just to the NW of Maui. Should be a good show.
