Robert D. Novak: Hillary's "McGovern" Problem
TownHall.com ^ | Saturday, February 16, 2008 | Robert D. Novak

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Strategists for Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign believe it is imperative to identify her high-flying opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, with the "McGovern wing" of the Democratic Party -- but they want to keep their candidate's fingerprints off the attack.

During the two weeks remaining before the important Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4, Clinton insiders want to spread the message that Obama represents the radical left-wing politics of George McGovern's 1972 candidacy, which won only one state. But they don't know how to accomplish this. When Clinton herself has launched past attacks on Obama, it has hurt her with voters.

The Clinton campaign is confident of winning in Texas because of the state's Hispanic vote. But it sees the need in Ohio to identify Obama as a leftist in the eyes of lower-income white voters, who often have supported Republican candidates against Democratic opponents they consider too liberal.

Well, it’ll be funny watching Hillary run against a liberal. It will also put her in a strange position, since she’s going to have a tough time convincing moderates and conservatives that she’s one of them.

Considering how he's worshiped by the dems, that's like a Republican attacking an opponent as The New Reagan.

“But it sees the need in Ohio to identify Obama as a leftist in the eyes of lower-income white voters, who often have supported Republican candidates against Democratic opponents they consider too liberal.”

This one statement, from the Novak piece, along with many others, shoots a hole in the lie that the nation is becoming liberal and a conservative candidate cannot win. There seem to be a lot of “conservatives” who are pushing this lie, some even on this board.

People keep bringing-up what Goebbels said about telling a lie often enough for it to become accepted as truth.

Unfortunately, you are right about all of the Clinton “skeletons” in ‘92, supposedly being enough to sink his candidacy. But who was there, and is there today, who would open the closet door (except to let a certain demographic out of the closet).

Heh heh. Well, a “moderate Democrat” is someone who thinks that some capitalists can be rehabilitated, and these ones might be spared. A “conservative Democrat” is one who thinks that the capitalists should merely be imprisoned rather than purged.

That's a good point, but there's yet another aspect of that--the acceptance of so much more that was unacceptable before the new media arrived.

Sure, now there are people who will reveal all sorts of things about a person's past...but in the wake of Clinton and Monica, and Paris Hilton, and the daily deluge of sex and homosexuality and drug use and etc. etc. etc., AND people becoming used to this at VERY young ages...I don't think any of that stuff is going to matter.

The media landscape has altered, but so has the moral landscape of the audience.

Che’s Obama is beyond what we think of as “Liberal” he is into the 70’s Radical edge of the Democrat Party, there should be -0- doubt he will cut and run out of Iraq.

He makes Ted Kennedy look like Jesse Helms he is THAT Liberal.

He was a Sharpton type in Chicago when he first started out, then he stabbed his ersatz mentor in the back by disallowing thousands of signatures on her application to run for the IL State Senate, the woman was one of those Iconic “Civil Rights” types, and he promptly threw her overboard as soon as he found a way to do so.

She’s politically toast.

One can hope. We all know better than to misunderestimate the Clintons. I'll be more convinced of her being toast of Obama toasts her the Ohio and Texas primaries. However, most polls show her ahead in both states.

Mrs. Bill Clinton would have to trounce Obama in both states in order to regain the lead in delegates. If she only wins both states by a narrow margin, Obama still maintains his lead in delegates.

I think Mrs. Bill Clinton's people are working the dead voters big time to ensure a victory. I am also certain that in the next 2 weeks, we are going to hear a lot of very bad things about Obama.

I’m sure the Clinton people would love to portray Obama as a far leftist but they can’t because most of the people who show up to vote in dem. primary’s are far leftist loons. Now republicans can sense an opportunity to finish of the wicked witch of New York and they may take that chance. I know I would if I lived in Texas or Ohio (it’s my understanding you have to register as a rep. or a dem. to vote in the primary’s in Ohio-or atleast that’s how it was when I lived there.)

It’s the only reson she voted for the war. It was her firewall for the moderates. Problem is that hurt her with the left, yet she cannot go against the left in the primaries. Especially if she is in a dogfight.

Oh it must suck to be in Clintonville this morning.

I so want Obama to win. Then the Clintons will either go away or be put away.

No way...

between the MI and FL disputed-delegates and the 'Stupor Delegates'... she's got plenty of wiggle room. Denver 2008 could make Chicago 1968 look like a love-in. The good part is that whichever is left standing come election day... will be so despised by the others supporters that it will affect turnout.

As do I. But I just don't think they will give up their quest for power. I can't see Hillary running again in 2012. You can see what toll this campaign has taken on her and it will hard for her to amass the kind of cash she amassed during the past 8 years again.

I can however see her running as Senate Majority Leader and winning because those in her party will feel like they owe her something. It would be a consolation prize.

Whether that would be enough power for her, who knows. Probably not.

Obama the radical liberal, says Hillary ? Is she serious ? Theoretically all he would have to do is read out Hillary’s speech she gave at the GM plant. But since he probably agrees with all of it, he can’t. The Clinton campaign is turning into a farce as it slowly implodes.

“If Hillary and the Clinton machine can’t beat Obama, then how will the republicans beat Obama?”

Simple. On the issues. McCain is already in the middle. Obama will never be able to come to the middle. Hillary’s only position to come to the middle will be riding the success of our troops in Iraq. She voted for the war.

That will piss off the radical left and the moderates will still vote for McCain regardless of party affiliation.

With Clinton, we really have to run only 1 ad over and over.

“49 Convictions. Unexplained deaths. A family with members that were indicted on federal charges. Won’t release information about finances. And a husband who was indicted, disbarred and impeached as President of the United States. Are you willing to trust this person with our country?”

“Hillary Clinton, We will take from you on behalf of t he common good”

McGovern will have more votes then her.

If this were happening with Republican voters there would be cries of racism. There is little difference in the stated policy goals of these two, so why would there be a preferential vote for Hillary by HIspanics?

Well, I certainly hope you two are correct but I do not believe beating Obama will be a cakewalk. So far, he has only increased his strenght despite everything the Clinton’s have thrown at him. I do notice that Hillary is trying to compete with him on issues, attempting to get him to take a stand on objectives and policies. We’ll just have to see how that plays out.

I just hope Obama isn't unstoppable.

There are two scenarious.

One --- that a large segment of old school blue-collar Democrats, especially the south and Mid-West, will not vote for Obama because he is too "Muslim" or "too black" --- and will either stay home in November or vote for McCain.

Or two --- that those same blue collar Democrats will get caught up in all the hoopla over Obama's blackness and hipster personna -- and decide to support him just cause they so hate Republicans.

Not sure which one will occur.

My guess is that the Hillary voters will be so ticked that their feminist hero got skunked that they will simply stay home.

Or if Hillary does manage to swipe the nomination from Obama, the Obama supporters will likewise stay home....... after accusing the Clintons and the Democrat party leaders a bunch of racists, of course.

“Yeah, I think she’s done, it will just take a few weeks for them to accept it (her and Bill that is).”

While I believe the end for Hillary may very well be near (I’m crossing over in Ohio to vote Barack just to get my punch to the ribs in), I am quite positive the Clintons would not be over it in a few weeks.

The Clintons are stalkers and their intended victim is power. Like most stalkers, if they cannot have their intended, they will destroy it so nobody else can have it. If they can’t stop Obama by March 4th, they will not get over it. They will destroy the Democrat party in an all-out effort/war to wrest the nomination. And, they’ll do it in such a manner as to destroy the party if necessary.

They’ll “get over it” if they lose. There will be blood in the streets when all is said and done if Hillary loses.
