From MSDS for N2H4:

“Potential Acute Health Effects:
Very hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of ingestion. Hazardous in case of skin contact (corrosive), of
eye contact (irritant), of inhalation. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator). Liquid or spray mist
may produce tissue damage particularly on mucous membranes of eyes, mouth and respiratory tract. Skin
contact may produce burns. Inhalation of the spray mist may produce severe irritation of respiratory tract,
characterized by coughing, choking, or shortness of breath. Severe over-exposure can result in death.”

You can't launch the shuttle in a polar orbit from Florida. There was a shuttle launch facility prepared at great expense at Vandenberg in the early 80s, but abandoned and never used.

Sure it was. It was used in the Bond movie "Moonraker."

If I ever see a Desert Tortoise, I’ll crush the sob. :)

I used to live in High Desert of SoCal. I bought the property, and later, had my home built there.

Clean air, no crime, wide open Desert to ride my dirt bikes, atv’s, etc. Until this left wing, nazi sob from Barstow let himself be used by the enviro-wackos. Now, 95% of the Desert is closed off to all but human traffic. (and developers, of course)

I lived and played in the Desert for more than 15 years, and I never, ever, not once, saw a desert tortoise. To boot, as it turns out, the Tortoise population continues to decline. Why? Because of the rapid development, the freakin’ birds don’t have as much prey to eat and they’re eating the Tortoises!

Sorry for my rant, I relinquish my soapbox now. LOL

I used to have one as a kid. One of my relatives, who lived out in the desert, caught one and gave it to me as a pet. I named him Herman, and he lived out in the back yard. On Saturdays, before mowing the lawn, I had to go out and hunt for him so I could put him somewhere safely out of reach of the mower blades.

I sure hope you didn’t take that seriously.

And, if you did, you don’t own a gun. LOL

Are you trying to make a point about gravity, or destroying it?

Nova had a piece on "AstroSpies" last night. The Soviets had a manned spy station in orbit that had a cannon.

From what I took from the show is that they actually fired it remotely, after the first crew departed, and it worked.

However, what wasn't clear is if the resulting vibrations damaged the station, because things started to go wrong during subsequent crewings.

You can't launch the shuttle in a polar orbit from Florida.

Other than 1.) population centers, and 2.) lack of shuttle thrust to probably achieve the desired altitude with large payloads, what else would hold them back?

The reason the Vandenberg shuttle launches were canceled is that the USAF was never thrilled with sat deployments from the shuttle to begin with, and SRBs for Vandenberg launches were going to use a brand new lightweight carbon fiber. Then the metal SRB destroyed Challenger, and well, you get the idea.

Sorry, but hydrazine (H4N2) doesn't create oxygen, although it can serve as a mono-component fuel when it's catalytically decomposed . Also, hydrazine is an unstable volatile liquid that is quickly destroyed in the atmosphere. It's also rapidly bio-degraded and wouldn't provide much long-term environmental risk compared to something like PCBs.
Personally, I wouldn't worry much about it unless a large tank somehow survived reentry intact and crashed into my house.

It would be nice to remind the ChiComms that we can shoot down any satellite up there.

You mean the reactant for the thiosemicarbazides synthesis? Yeah, I know, but hey, I didn’t make the image, I just ripped it off from somewhere on the internets.

Re: ” It was no accident that the debris was in Texas, as that was the state the shuttle was attempting to land.”

Exactly where in Texas was the Shuttle supposed to land? DFW or HOU.

The Columbia was on course to land at the Cape, not in Texas.
To get down from the shuttle’s orbit to the Cape... the flight plan was over Texas. Back to Orbital Mechanics 101 for you!

You’re mixing up the quotes. The OP said that the debris field was over Texas because that was the state where it was trying to land.

I ask if it was trying to land at DFW or HOU and said it was on its way to land at the Cape.

???
Hydrazine is basically a little wing of alar, with one of the H atoms lost to the bond with the rest of the alarmolecule. Hydrazine is not alar by a long shot.

Hydrazine:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrazine
chemical formula N2H2

Alar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alar
chemical formula C6H12N2O3

Why can’t they send a space shuttle to pick it up, bring it back to earth and repair the bloody thing?

I dislike the idea of blowing it up simply because there is already too much crap in orbit.
