In 1956 Adlai Stevenson, running against Dwight Eisenhower, tried to make the political style of his opponents vice president, a man by the name of Richard Nixon, an issue. The nation, he warned, was in danger of becoming a land of slander and scare; the land of sly innuendo, the poison pen, the anonymous phone call and hustling, pushing, shoving; the land of smash and grab and anything to win. This is Nixonland.
The quote comes from Nixonland, [] by Rick Perlstein []. As Mr. Perlstein shows, Stevenson warned in vain: during those years America did indeed become the land of slander and scare, of the politics of hatred.
And it still is. In fact, these days even the Democratic Party seems to be turning into Nixonland.

Whats particularly saddening is the way many Obama supporters seem happy with the application of Clinton rules the term a number of observers use for the way pundits and some news organizations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent.
The prime example of Clinton rules in the 1990s was the way the press covered Whitewater. A small, failed land deal became the basis of a multiyear, multimillion-dollar investigation, which never found any evidence of wrongdoing on the Clintons part, yet the scandal became a symbol of the Clinton administrations alleged corruption.

If any knows about eternally spring hate, it is absolutely unquestionably Paul Krugman. He and his cadre of toadies at the NYT editorial section are professional attackdogs and do nothing each week but hate Republicans and all things non-liberal.
They invented the politics of personal destruction. So if they suddenly find it distateful they might want to offer a ceasefire starting with their own columns. And that ceasefire needs to include the dyke Dowd and that queen Frank Rich and whomever writes the main editorials for the NYT.
Wow. Sounds like Adlai Stevenson slandering Nixon.
It is funny to hear the Clinton Party, the War Room party, complaining about hardball politics.
Whitewater was not a small failed land deal. It was 300 elderly couples being bilked out of their life savings, and it led to convictions for a sitting governor, Jim Guy Tucker, among others.
EVEN the Democrat Party? Seems to me the Democrats became masters of the politics of personal destruction when Reagan was running for office, and it hasn't stopped since.
Good gosh, where is the barf alert on this one!!
They are the “real victims” after all.
My two cents:
Tailgunner Joe McCarthy was right. Richard Nixon was on his side. They were both right. The commies and socialists vowed revenge on them both, Senator McCarthy died and they succeeded against President Nixon. They print and regurgitate their fellow travelers lies and accusations as the truth and two generations of Americans have soaked up this tripe unopposed by the mainstream media. This is just more of the same.
That was a capital offense.
Now what of his lesser sins?
The famous "Checkers speech" defended against one accusation. He had been accused of getting a "Rich Men's Trust Fund" that enabled him to live in a style far beyond his salary as a Senator.
During the speech he questioned if the accusers (the Democrats and MSM friends) would announce their sources of funding. Oh! the shame of such invective! Shame, Senator Nixon. Shame!
Folks, those were the days when Eisenhower's chief White House aide Sherman Adams received a $200 vicuna coat from a businessman and had to resign.
Mean while Senate Democrat LBJ was stealing TV and radio licenses and his chief aide Bobby Baker was dancing with the Mob. Alger Hiss was hailed a hero and honored after years of serving Uncle Joe's workers' paradise -- while first-hand witnesses like Whittaker Chambers joined Nixon as charged with a capital offense: exposing Communists.
Go figure. (We have -- and history proves we were right.)
It is typically Krugmanlike to turn things upside down and blame Obama - and even Nixon! - for the dirt that’s flying around in Democratic cricles today. Almost all of the sleaze is coming from the Hillary campaign; even most Democrats can see that, but not the liar Krugman. The man is disgusting.
