McCain a 'True Conservative,' Bush Says Feb 10 09:36 AM US/Eastern WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain is a "true conservative," President Bush says, although the presumptive Republican presidential nominee may have to work harder to convince other conservatives that he is one of their own.
McCain "is very strong on national defense," Bush said in an interview taped for airing on "Fox News Sunday." "He is tough fiscally. He believes the tax cuts ought to be permanent. He is pro-life. His principles are sound and solid as far as I'm concerned."
But when asked about criticism of McCain by conservative commentators Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, the president said, "I think that if John is the nominee, he has got some convincing to do to convince people that he is a solid conservative and I'll be glad to help him if he is the nominee."
Bush said some of the criticism of the Arizona senator was the result of "probably, some personal animosity toward me. You can't please all the people all the time."
Asked during the interview about GOP candidate Mike Huckabee's criticism of his foreign policy, Bush said: "I'm sure that you can find quotes from people running for office that sound like they're at odds with me. But the pointwhat really matters in a campaign what are the basic beliefs."
Regarding attacks on his performance from Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, Bush said, "If the Democrat party feels like they can win an election by focusing on me, I think they'll be making a huge tactical mistake."
Of Obama, the president said, "I certainly don't know what he believes in."

There’s a ringing endorsement.
No thanks.
How would Dub know what a true conservative is?
Probably NOT..."certainly" is the appropriate adverb.
Neither one of them knows what a Conservative is.
Don't listen to McCain's politically motivated promises of the moment: observe his actions. This is the man John McCain chose to be his "Hispanic Outreach Director." Hernandez is a verified traitor. Born in Dallas he decided as an adult to become a dual-national Mexican citizen. His last "real" job was serving in Mexican President Vicente Fox's cabinet as his "American Reconquista Director." After that gig ran out, he worked (sic) for George Soros funded internationalist foundations, like the one that published his book.

The "New American Pioneers" proclaimed in his book are the illegal alien invaders he urges to become settlers in the USA. Hernandez believes all Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the USA should become dual citizens and consider themselves Mexicans first, "to the 8th generation." He believes there should be no border at all between Mexico and the USA, ever.
And this is the man McCain chose for his "Hispanic Outreach Director." In the past week he was asked about this choice, and McCain said he chose Hernandez because he agrees with his positions. If so, McCain is supporting invasion and reconquista.
Then I read our Constitution, Article 4 Section 4, and I can only conclude one thing: Juan McShamnesty is our new Benedict Arnold.
"Is this an example of what the word 'irony' means, Mommy...?" ;)
The statists stole the word Liberal. Now they’ve destroryed the meaning beneath Conservative too.
“W” just told Chris Wallace something to the effect of “I don’t give a damn about polls.” Love it!
How would he know?
If McCain can't tackle that tough issue now, what reasonable hope is there that he'll be able to tackle any tough issues later?
That was good ! rofl

...in much the same sense that the greatest expansion of the welfare state since LBJ and $350 million “bridges to nowhere” flow from conservative principles.
This is why I hate our primary system. Where is the young GOP candidate with ideas - the GOP Obama? By the time I get to vote in Ohio, I get nothing but the old guard supported by the old guard. Bush, McCain. UGH!
Oh, brother.
I have a feeling McCain will choose Mel Martinez as his running mate or that governor from Florida.
- Open borders
- Build a fence (yeah right, suckers)
- More border guards (yeah right, suckers)
- National Guard on the border (yeah right, suckers)
- Amnesty for 12-60 million illegals
- Open Checkbook
- Myers for the SC if he can sneak her through without the 'conservative' base raising a ruckus
- Sellout on the Dubai Ports, if he can sneak that through without the 'conservative base raising a ruckus
That confirms McCain is not a Conservative.
I wouldn't care much for polls either if my numbers were tanking.
Unfortunately, the media won't publish polls that show Congressional approval ratings are even lower than Bush's. (Bias? What bias? </s>)
What a dilemma.
We got rid of the least-conservative candidate, which is good.
Now we’re stuck with the least-loved-by-conservatives candidate.
I mean, at least many of us who opposed Giuliani had respect for a number of his in-office accomplishments.
I have NO respect for ANY of McCain’s in-office accomplishments that I can think of. He voted for other people’s good ideas, sometimes, and that’s good.
But when did he have one of his own?
Hey lets morph that MDS into BDS ...
Why hell this sight is turning Liberal as we speak...
True Consevatives... Bah...
Terrorist enemies of the U.S. will celebrate on the defeat of the GOP in NOV... More Americans Die when Hillobama get in office thank a Conservative...
pst... there is a forest byond those trees... don’t be lemmings of Rush and Hannity...
Bush was doing much better, and always has for that matter, when he kept his mouth shut.
El Bush lost the real conservatives long ago.
He’s the example given in the conservative handbook under hold your nose voting.
Is Bush talking about the same McCain who had a 62% conservative rating last year?
Sounds like Bush is using a similar measure for this judgment as he used for appointing ‘strict constructionists’ to the USSC . . . . before we conservatives stood up and refused to let him get away with such tomfoolery.
Bush has zero credibility on this issue. It would be better if he kept quiet.
Sorry but when did Conservative become defined as strictly a border movement?
So Amnesty makes you a Liberal... Hey Ronald Reagan get a load of this...
pst.. .there is a forest beyond those trees.
“He is pro-life. His principles are sound and solid as far as I’m concerned.”
Someone please show me where McCain is pro-life.
He compromises with DemoRats - and that is principled? hahhahhaha!
If Juan McShamnesty doesn’t know that Hernandez’ last job was serving on Vicente Fox’ cabinet as his “American reconquista” expert, then McShamnesty is far too stupid for the job.
This is like making Larry Flynt your “family values outreach” director.
Cheers!
BUSH is not exactly a conservative EITHER, remember.
The primary system notwithstanding, are there any young GOP candidates who would fit the bill? If so, I would very much like to know more about them.
Ultimately, you are correct: we need to get rid of the old guard country-club pubbies and reinvigorate the base with a younger, bold, charismatic conservative who is as unapologetic about his conservative ideals as the Democrats are about their patently liberal ones.
Was McCain-Feingold his idea, or Feingold’s?
Was McCain-Kennedy his idea, or Kennedy’s?
Did you sleep during the summer with amnesty became the hot topic for conservatives who managed to influence enough Senators to vote it down -— twice?
That statement implies Obama actually has ideas.
Sometimes I wonder if “true conservative” means obstinate whiner. Especially after reading some comments on this site...
Mel Martinez is not eligible to serve as Vice President or President, because he was not a natural born U.S. Citizen.
” “If the Democrat party feels like they can win an election by focusing on me, I think they’ll be making a huge tactical mistake.””
And if mclame thinks he can win the election by uniting us in hate against the dems, he’ll be making a huge tactical mistake.
Nothing good ever comes from uniting in hate. The only thing such a thing breeds is more hate.
Remember....The nazi party were united in hate. They did not stand for anything other than hate. They weren’t FOR anything, but AGAINST.
I cannot take part in mclame’s party of hate.
Why do you think so many of us are fighting like cats and dogs? There has always been healthy debate on FR, not the hatred that’s pouring out recently.
I believe the reason it’s been this way is because WE are rejecting, “uniting in hate”, it goes against our grain.
“If McCain can’t tackle that tough issue now, what reasonable hope is there that he’ll be able to tackle any tough issues later?”
BUT, I am SURE he won’t cry about it !
A “true conservative” apparently means that you willing give the country away to the mexican illegals.
I’m sure bev slept right through it and left the hard work to everyone else.
His position on several issues disqualify him as a conservative. How about stem cell research? How can he claim to be pro-life when he supports using human embryo stem cells?
As for the SCOTUS nominees, never forget that Bush first tried to ram Harriet Miers down our throats first...which got Harry Ried's immediate blessing. It was only after the conservative base's outrage that Bush caved in and nominated Alito.
Sadder still is that Bush blew all his political capital he gathered in 2001-2005 on championing the invasion of illegal aliens. We had a majority in congress and the White House, and the RINOs completely blew it for us. Every time I remember that, I am moved to anger...even if only to avoid despair.
Indeed. Claiming to be pro-life while being in favor of embryonic stem cell research is like fornicating for virginity.
I don’t know. Do you? But by affixing his name to and fighting for them, he’s sure saying “I want to be uniquely identified with this great idea!”
Awwww...RINO love.
