"Independence date: February 17" (Kosovo Set to Declare Independence)
B92 ^ | February 8, 2008

Posted on 02/09/2008 7:17:27 AM PST by cizinec

BELGRADE -- The government has information suggesting that Hashim Thaci will declare Kosovo independence on February 17.

In talks with EU High Representative Javier Solana’s adviser Stefan Lene, Kosovo Minister Slobodan Samardžić said that the EU could not expect Serbia to sign off Kosovo’s independence, right before a unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence, said the Kosovo Ministry.

At this moment in time, by signing any sort of agreement with the EU, Serbia would be giving its consent and justification to creating a fake state on its territory, Samardžić reiterated, adding that Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica “will not sign such an act.”

The EU is attempting to get Serbia to sign any sort of agreement before February 17, since, by doing so, Serbia’s signature would be a signature for Kosovo independence, said the minister, adding that such a signature would justify the loss of 15 percent of its territory, and a violent breach of the UN Charter and Resolution 1244.

Yesterday, Samardžić, from Koštunica's Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) had said that the cabinet would fall if the Democrats continued to insist on the EU deal.

The minister's comments came yesterday afternoon during a news conference in Belgrade, Beta reported.

He said that his party's ministers and MPs will do everything they can to end the crisis, "but not at the price of the sovereignty and integrity of the country."

He blasted the EU for undermining political stability in Serbia by deciding to dispatch a mission to Kosovo and at the same time present a political deal "without any substance."

"The deal is nothing. Double zero," Samardžić said.

Samardžić went on to say that the deal was proposed to mitigate the impact of the Kosovo mission and so that Serbia would consent to the mission and a sequence of events leading to the independence of the province.

"It's unfortunate that the EU has infiltrated the Serbian political system in this way just a day after the election of a new president," he remarked.

He also observed that the political deal does not have the hallmarks of an international treaty and offers nothing more than the Stabilization and Association Agreement.

Commenting on whether Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić has the authority to sign it, Samardžić cited Parliament's latest declaration on Kosovo, which authorizes only treaties conducive to the sovereignty and unity of the state.

IMHO, Serbia and the Russians will not sit back for this.

One of the reasons I voted for Alan Keyes in 2000 GOP presidential primary was his opposition to our intervention in the so-called Kosovo conflict. All the other candidates voiced support for the military intervention in the televised debates. Keyes is running again this year, and I urge those who aren't pleased with the prospect of McCain as GOP nominee to consider Alan Keyes. His campaign website is alankeyes.com.

I have a sinking feeling that this is going to get nasty fast.

On the Balkans, McCain is pro-terrorist, as are Hillary and Obama; our current president is, at best, sitting on the fence, and England and France are pro-terrorist.

I hate to see the Russians be the ones sticking up for the good guys this time, even if their motive are far from altruistic.

With this election cycle and now this, it feels like I’m living in a bad dream. How much worse does it have to get?

“How much worse does it have to get?”

How about a general Balkan war, in the style of 1911 and 1912, with each side calling for outside support? That’s the worst-case scenario.

How's about restricting yourself to realistic worst-case scenarios?

The Russians found out the limitations of their power back in 1999, when their Colonels' coup-de-main was thwarted by a denial of overflight rights for the reinforcing units, and since then have found something much more compelling than Serbian interests to pursue vis-a-vis Europe: Petrodollars.

As to the Serbs themselves, if they chose to go into Kosovo and have another run-in with NATO, with what would they do it, and which of their borders, across all of which they could then expect NATO forces to cross in response, would they leave undefended in order to do it? You see, they've only got 5 Brigades with which to work with, and that's not enough to defend Serbia itself in the first place, much less mount offensive operations against the rest of Europe.

Simply put, not even the Serbian Radicals are stupid enough to go to war over Kosovo, and stupidity is about they only thing they've got going for themselves.

I fear this could go south fast. What if Russia comes in? Should US boys die for Albania? Will the Europeans fight the Serbs or watch and write notes of protest. Do they want Russia to cut off the gas in the middle of winter?
If Putin settles the issue with tanks it will put Russia back on the track of superpowerdom. The USA with elections and economic problems will let the UN handle this one. If we do, its our first step backwards.

Not a chance in hell. Do Serbs sound like the types who would back down from fighting for something they know in their hearts is right?

Jake Allex Mandusich -

“...was an American soldier of ethnic Serbian descent who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the US Army during World War I. Allex entered the US Army in Chicago, Illinois, and returned there following the World War I, with the rank of sergeant. While in the Army he served in Company H, 131st Infantry, 33rd Infantry Division. On August 9th, 1918, near Chipilly Ridge, France, when finding all of their officers either wounded or killed and his platoon under heavy attack from the opposing German forces, Allex, a corporal, took command. Leading his platoon forward toward the machine gun nest, his platoon was able to overwhelm the opposition. Allex alone killed five enemy soldiers, and when his bayonet broke, he used the butt of his rifle in close quarters combat, taking fifteen German prisoners.”

Is NATO stupid enough to support the very Jihadists who want to kill them?

I guess I should ask if they are stupid enough to do so again?

There’s not a big enough rock in the world for him to crawl under for that to happen.

Well, following your logic, I would suggest that you wrote a stupid sentence.

1. Serbs need 1 (one) soldier, marching into Kosovo. A single shot fired at him by NATO is an act of aggression and attack on sovereign nation

2. If Serbs move in Kosovo, and NATO and US attack Serbia, Serbs would be just doing policing actions, and NATO and US would make an act of war against sovereign nation.
Kosovo is not a nation, Serbia is

3. If NATO and US occupies Serbia after attacking Serbia, and steal Kosovo from Serbia what chances US diplomats would have in making N.Koreans and Iranians willingly disbanding their nuclear programmes?

I can all ready hear US diplomat speech in Pyongyang:
“Yes, we attacked Serbia, torre a part of Serbia and than occupied Serbia, but we are nice guys, please there is no need for your nukes, you should disband your nuke program!”

I can already hear entire Pyongyang laughing their a**es off!

- In short, after occupying Serbia, just what are the chances of making Russia accept US missile shield?

- Hoppy, if Hillary wins elections, you are to get promoted to 4 star general...
And you would probably be in charge of defending US front against Sino-Russian invasion.... on Missisipi

You are a paragon of Serbian logic, kronos.

Best of luck with that, and would you mind if I use "No Serbia without Kosovo" in my tagline after Kosovo's independence?

If you were to be honest about it, the tagline would read “Dhimmwit for hire - cheap!”
