Huckabee solicits funds from embattled televangelist

Gov. Mike Huckabee, vastly outspent so far in his bid for the presidency, has turned for funding to a controversial televangelist who is under active Senate investigation. Late last month, Gov. Huckabee held a fundraiser at the Texas estate of millionaire televangelist Kenneth Copeland, his spokesman tells NBC News.

The U.S. Senate currently is investigating Copeland, and five other televangelists, amid allegations that they are improperly using millions in charitable donations for their personal benefit, and, in the process, fleecing their flock. Copeland and the other televangelists have strongly denied those allegations.

“The Huckabee Event was not hosted by Ken Copeland or anyone employed by the church,” a spokesman for Kenneth Copeland Ministries tells NBC. “The Huckabee campaign rented a room at our facility and hosted a private function,” the spokesman says.

The event raised about $100,000 for Huckabee's campaign and nearly $1 million more in pledges, according to a blog report by Doug Wead, a former Republican strategist with close ties to the evangelical community. A Huckabee spokeswoman did not dispute those figures but would not disclose any amounts. "Any funds raised by Mr. Copeland will be fully and properly disclosed in Governor Huckabee's FEC report," a Huckabee spokeswoman tells NBC.

“The event raised about $100,000 for Huckabee’s campaign and nearly $1 million more in pledges...”

Now all Huckabee has to do is give it to Copeland’s Ministry as a seed-harvest offering.

Congressman Duncan Hunter's endorsement of Governor Huckabee
is helping to bring defense and border conservatives on board:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter...
"Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity."

They do not have the power to do that and Huckabee will be a hero if he jumps all over them for it.

Since when are the ministers/priests/ shysters/ mullahs/rabbis/yogis's/Tom Cruise/etc. subject to regulation by the US SENATE?

That happens whenever the government sees money that they're not getting a cut from, or being bought by. None of those on your list need to lobby any senators, and they don't like it.

How is someone “embattled” just because some corrupt Senator is out to get them?

Huckabee can step up to great American status if he cuts these sons of bitches off at the knees.

What is the concept, the US GOVERNMENT is going to tell preachers how much of the take to use for themselves?.

TOTALLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

Kind of weird. Maybe they expect McCain to pick him for VP and are just getting started?

You're the kind of poster here who'd have us believe that the phrase ".... active Senate investigation..." has any real meaning.

For that matter, everybody can do that. Let's try this "Hilary Clinton, under an active Virginia based investigation....", or "Senator McCain, subject of major surveillance by the Indianapolis police department during his recent visit....." or ~~~ well, I'm sure you get the idea.

Now, for your concern for the place of televangelists and holyrollers in our society ~ is it possible you'd like that reduced substantially?

I think they must have found the authority hidden in the Constitution, a few lines after the abortion statute.

"Humble man of God" has clear theological implications. Still, not all deacons and elders take pledges of poverty.

Duncan “got to know” Huckabee which means he didn’t know him before and either does’t know anything about him now, or doesn’t care that he’s pushed illegals down the throats of the people of his own state because he thinks that’s the “Christian” thing to do. I was for Duncan Hunter at first, but I lost all respect for him when he drank the Huckabee Kool-aid.

Those like Jim Baker and Copeland, who trade “salvation” for cash are despicable and give true Christianity a bad name.

Copeland also quoted Gov. Huckabee as saying: "Why should I stand with them [Senate] and not stand with you? They only got 11 percent approval rating."

Give people..give till it hurts, so Mike can live like a King in the White House..

This Copeland link has been out there for at least a month. The question is why a negative MSM article on Huckabee now? There haven't any negative pieces on him when he was serving to frustrate Romney, but now with Romney gone apparently it is open season.

For you to think that my comment “Huckster trying to buy respectability from Copeland and vice versa.” means that I want the “place of televangelists and holyrollers in our society... reduced substantially?” is quite a stretch.

It is self evident that Copeland and Huckabee are shady and phony at best. They have caused considerable scandal to the public image of American Christianity.

? Talk about a stretch. By now the 85% of Americans who have an affiliation with a Christian body, or who are well aware of what Christianity is all about (and that includes all the Pure Earth Buddhists, and just about anybody else who's awake) understand full well the difference between the televangelists and others.

Didn't you ever think that there really are people who want to give their money to these guys to make them seem to be important? Once they've done that the givers can bask in the "glory" of their powerful leader.

That's human nature!

So, let's go to the question of whether or not Huckabee's pronouncements of theology have harmed Christianity ~ first, that's going to depend on what we can agree on about Christianity. So, as I've asked others, are you sure you stay seated as the communion plates are passed?
