NEW YORK (AP) Less than a week after being sworn in as a U.S. citizen, Craig Ferguson learned he'll be telling jokes to President Bush.
The CBS "Late Late Show" host revealed Tuesday that he's been booked as the entertainer at the annual White House correspondents' dinner in Washington, scheduled April 26.
Ferguson, a Scotsman, recently passed an American citizenship test and was formally sworn in Friday. For his late-night viewers, he described the correspondents' dinner as "like the Oscars for politicians."
It's also potential trouble for comics: Don Imus and Stephen Colbert both provoked some criticism for their pointed political jokes.
"There are 2,800 journalists in attendance, there (are) congressman, senators there, military brass, the Cabinet and I sit at the top table with the president and the first lady," Ferguson said. "And I am thinking, `Does he know I can't be kicked out now?'"
"I thought it would be the big thing, have the dinner and `as my last act as president, you go home, Ferguson,'" the 45-year-old talk-show host said. "And I'll say, `I am home!'"

Finally, someone who's FUNNY will host the thing. Wish I could go!!
Oh, Craig has made his little jabs at the right, but out of all the late-nights, he’s the only one the wife and I can stomach.
Plus, we love that Scottish accent!
I enjoy Ferguson’s show. I switched to him after I could no longer stomach Letterman’s contempt for the right.
Ferguson used to tell jokes at Bush’s expense, and then say to the camera, “Give me my citizenship, Mr. President, and this will end!”
But he does seem fair overall, and loves this country. He takes some cheap shots at Rush now and then. I just hope he doesn’t now feel secure enough to join most of Hollywood way out on the left.
And welcome to it, Craig. Congratulations.
I thought Fergie was one of those "Goofy Noofies"... but, I could be wrong . . .
I loved Lewis Black’s description of what it was like to do this gig. He’s a lib, but he’s funny.
He does appear to be appreciative and excited about his newly gained citizenship.
Same here, and same here.
Ferguson has far & away the best monologue in late-night tv. Letterman has become grouchy & old..very ‘establishment’. And his corny bits that he won’t let go... ugh.
I still can’t believe they’re actually going to give the Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien.
It’s neat to see someone embrace and be so excited about coming here, for a change, isn’t it? All we ever hear is how much the world hates us. Gwyneth Paltrow keeps going to England to bad-mouth us (but somehow ended up at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center..a fact no one seems to want to publicize).
I know there are funny libs, and I’ve been known to laugh at them on occasion. But I’m just sick and tired of these comedians that turn around and berate my belief system at the same time they’ve got their hands out (so to speak).
I met Craig several years ago then worked with him after that. He’s a really nice guy. Too bad he drinks the Hollywood Kool- Aid.
Lewis Black wouldn’t know funny if a piano hit him on the head as he walked through a plate glass window cause he was staring at some long haired ‘hot young thing’ that turned out to be a guy.
I’m glad to know that his ‘regular guy’ persona isn’t a total lie. Do you think he’ll succumb to Hollywood Cranial Rectumitis completely, or does he have enough in him to remember us sane people?
I haven’t spoken to him in years so I don’t know how he is these days. I hope he remains humble. He was a working actor before but never had the exposure he now has from his talk show.
