I am deeply disappointed the Republican Party seems poised to select a nominee who did not support a Constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage, voted for embryonic stem cell research to kill nascent human beings, opposed tax cuts that ended the marriage penalty, has little regard for freedom of speech, organized the Gang of 14 to preserve filibusters in judicial hearings, and has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language.
I am convinced Sen. McCain is not a conservative, and in fact, has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are. He has sounded at times more like a member of the other party. McCain actually considered leaving the GOP caucus in 2001, and approached John Kerry about being Kerrys running mate in 2004. McCain also said publicly that Hillary Clinton would make a good president. Given these and many other concerns, a spoonful of sugar does NOT make the medicine go down. I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience.
But what a sad and melancholy decision this is for me and many other conservatives. Should Sen. McCain capture the nomination as many assume, I believe this general election will offer the worst choices for president in my lifetime. I certainly can't vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on their virulently anti-family policy positions. If these are the nominees in November, I simply will not cast a ballot for president for the first time in my life. These decisions are my personal views and do not represent the organization with which I am affiliated. They do reflect my deeply held convictions about the institution of the family, about moral and spiritual beliefs, and about the welfare of our country.
Needed to say this a couple weeks ago.
I think 3/4 of this country is in the bag for Obama either through voting for him or staying home and letting it happen.
I have been an admirer of James Dobson for many years, but was really irked when he trashed Fred Thompson back in the fall, going so far as to question the genuineness of his faith.
If these are the candidates in November I will NOT vote Republican or Democrat but as a matter of conscience I will WRITE IN DUNCAN HUNTER!
Maybe between now and November, we can get a “None Of The Above” on ballots.
His comments were inappropriate and should have never made such statements.
Oh, grow up, Dobson. If you can’t vote for one of the Big Two in good conscience, at least get off your arse and cast a protest third-party or write-in vote.
Well said DR Dobson
Well Said
So we should all do the “PRINCIPLED, CONSERVATIVE” thing and support Hillary or Obama.
A classic “ends justify the means” way of thinking.
And total BS.
Rush has good comments today on McCain's extreme dishonesty.
Huh, Laura does not support McCain??
Agreed. With Roe likely at 5-4 now, and two Pro-Roe SCOTUS Justices almost certain to leave or pass away by 2012, the stakes are too high.
Gotta hold your nose and vote for whoever gets the nod. Duke it out now in the primaries, of course; but McCain would almost certainly mean the overturning of Roe, even if we got little else from him.
Affirmative Action, Roe v. Wade,.....so many just EARTH-MOVING decision that could be made right. The stakes are soooooo high.
Consider the alternative:
Two forty-something, Marxist judges who’ll serve for the next fifty years and pretty much cement another full generation+ of mandated abortion radicalism.
McCain looks great in comparison. Maybe not to folks who seriously think that immigration is the ONLY issue that matters anymore, but he does.
Plus, McCain will reign in spending. Even a hater has to acknowledge that much.
Gotta suck-it-up and not be blinded by hatred.
You have the right to write in any one you want!
But besides getting an emotional kick, there is no practical benefit to write in Duncan.
Dobson is right on McCain....and a McCain nomination would be tantamount to the GOP starpping on explosives and blowing themselves up on election day.
Granted, he should have stepped up earlier and supported a conservative candidate....but ending up w McCain will turn the GOP into Whigs
Best thing for the GOP is to have McCain get out. The illegal alien amnesty lobby is not worth losing conservative support
Staying home is surrendering. Vote third party or write in Duncan Hunter.
“I do not agree with Mr. Dobson’s decision to not vote in November but, the rest I’m on board with.”
Something wrong with people not voting if there isn’t anyone who they can support? Ever heard of words like, convictions and principles? Who do you suggest Dobson vote for if he doesn’t support any of the republican RINO’s?
President McCain will bring blame on the republicans. OTOH with a demorat in WH, all blame will be on them and we might see a Reaganesque figure emerge in 2012.
It comes down to whether you are OK with Hillary/Obama as president or you aren’t.
If you’re OK with a Dem winning, you have no business in the Republican party, in my opinion.
The lack of perspective from the “conservative” media is staggering.
Bump!
I don’t disagree with his decision to not support McCain. But, then, again he might be the candidate...
I voted for Huckabee here in Oklahoma this morning. Polls showed he was the only one within range of McCain. I didn’t want our 41 winner-take-all delegates to go with the Repub’s best Dem. Here is a thought: If McCain wins, and Hildabeast loses, do you think he’ll ask her to be his running mate? This is the same argument die-hard Repubs are asking us to buy into because they assert McCain is the only electable candidate. Mrs. Bill would just make him that much more appealing to a broader sector of America, right???
Boy, isn't that the truth. Dobson has himself to blame, along with others and we all have to suffer the consequences.
I’m sick and tired of the opinions of commercial preachers.
We are always able to write in a candidate’s name in November.
Dobson needs to keep his stinking pie hole shut. He’s one of the reasons he doesn’t have someone to vote for. He torpedoed thompson in the fall, I’ve lost any respect I had for him and have asked my church to consider removing his weekly insert from our progam.
I hope his ministry loses any tax free status as well. He’s acting as a poplitical operative and failing to focus on the family. He left my family with crappy choioces too. Ptooie!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO DOBSON SUPPORTED? I see rumors he was going to support the Huckster.....
Dobson is voting, just not for President. I will be doing the same thing if McCain is the nominee.
Perspective extends much farther than a political party. If this is the only thing that matters to Republicans, winning (regardless who we put in that chair), then you are right, we don’t have any business being in the party - nor do we have any desire to be in it.
Dobson should just announce that he will never vote for anyone. He’s telling us who he won’t vote for so often rather than who he will vote for that he’s starting to remind me of Rush.
To be honest, I couldn’t care less what Dobson says, does or thinks.
Our family will write in Duncan Hunter! That is a given!!
DITTO~~ I back Dr. Dobson despite the all the " Dobson Bashers" here on FR!
Who are you referring to? If you believe Dobson is a preacher maybe you are out of touch. lol.
It’s much easier to adhere to one’s values when doing so makes a lot of money. It’s more remarkable when one adheres to those values when doing so results in daily beatings and solitary confinement in the Hanoi Hilton.
“I have been an admirer of James Dobson for many years, but was really irked when he trashed Fred Thompson back in the fall, going so far as to question the genuineness of his faith.”
Why don’t you simply stop admiring him?
I totally agree. This, from James Dobson, might've made a difference if he said it earlier. As damning of McCain as his words are, and as influential as Dobson may be, it's too little too late.
Listen, there is a surge going on now for the conservative movement to rally behind our best hope. Unfortunately, it’s happening to late as the electorate was not sold. It’s unfortunate, but barring a miracle, we are looking at a McCain nomination which is truly depressing. Memories are long in conservative cirlces. I remember when McCain voted against the first tax cut, I said then I’d never vote for him. McCain is counting on consevatives coming home to him on election night to rally against a Hillary presidency. I think he has made a poor gamble. You can’t crap all over a constituency time and time again and then count on their vote. I’m with Dobson, Rush, et al.
Dobson already shot his wad and helped kill off Fred. Now he’s shooting blanks. If he really wants to help at this point and de-rail McCain, how about urging Huckabee to drop out and throw his support to Romney?
“I am disappointed that Dobson did not support Fred and went out of his way to turn off Evangelicals to Fred. Now he complains that he is left with no choice for a good nominee.”
Although I agree with Dobson on most of the issues - the man is an idiot and he led some of his bigoted flock astray.
He’d serve one term, but piss-off the base so much that the party would suffer defeat in 2012, and force a regrouping next time around. Sort of like what happened with Bush 43.
Meanwhile, we’d at least get good judges and some actual spending cuts and shattered pork-barrels.
Fight for or against whoever in the primaries, but remember that McCain gives us a few positives we won’t get from the Democrats:
1.) No surrender - four more years+ to finish Iraq.
2.) Good judges - end of Roe and Affirmative Action.
3.) Spending restraint/pork-barrel shattering.
4.) No tax increase. It matters.
So as far as I’m concerned, call McCain whatever you want, and fight him like a demon NOW. But if the dust settles and he’s left as the nominee, hold your nose and pull the lever.
Everyone is ALWAYS tired of “holding their nose” for RINOs. Me too. But we have never, EVER been so close to so many positive gains as right now. Never. We have NEVER been so close to overturning Roe and Affirmative Action. It’s worth it to hold our noses ONE MORE TIME in this cases, because it is situational case where we should. That is not always the case, but it is this time.
