The voters had a temper tantrum last week . . . Parenting and governing don't have to be dirty words: the nation can't be run by an angry two-year-old. -- Peter Jennings, November 14, 2004, commenting on the Republican landslide.
[C]onservatives . . . can choose to stand aside from history while having a temper tantrum. But they should consider that the American people might then choose not to invite them back into a position of responsibility for quite a while to come. -- William Kristol, February 4, 2008, on conservative aversion to McCain.
It's one thing to be bawled out by the late Peter Jennings. But do conservatives have to have their knuckles rapped by one of their own, Bill Kristol? Apparently yes, as per the Weekly Standard editor's New York Times column of today, Dyspepsia on the Right.

Sell out
Shades of Peter Jennings ping to Today show list.
All the FNC guys have gone way left, I don’t listen to them any more.
Drinking too much of the NYT cool-aide.
Sellout RINO!!!!!
Hey Krisol, KMA...
Nope, and that's exactly why I fired the "Weekly Standard" right after getting a couple of issues.
They don't write for conservatives, only the "inside the beltway" crowd or RINOs.
I stopped app two years ago. I could sense the change even then.
Kristol is a liberal RINO.
I’ll pass. I want responsibility for the coming debacle to be very clear.

Don’t blame Mr. Kristol he’s just making money. True conservatism is actually in a minority not only in the country but within the GOP. W and Reagen won by reaching out to nonconservative elements and getting them to go along for the ride. Don’t be mad that we aren’t calling the shots this time around... sit and think... then read... then be mad that we haven’t really called the shots EVER. Contract with America? “Read my lips”? Medicare expansion? People here joke about blacks being stuck with the democratic party maybe we should look in the mirror.
Why are all these guys so worried we may not fall into their line and so what they say?
They need to save their self-righteous faux-indignant rhetoric for the perpetually offended and outraged left.
That’s exactly what I’ve said. We can’t laugh at blacks for being on the ‘rat plantation then turn around and do the exact same thing.
It has taken me a little longer. FNC has become MSM.
P.S. Peter Jennings said that in 1994, not 2004.
Kristol is only a conservative if you consider George Pataki a conservative. I’m sick of being chirped at by Parakeet males (as Ann Coulter calls them). These people have no passion. They just drift along with the breeze and try to get along by caving in to leftists.
Kristol and Buchanan I consider similar in that they seem to hit the nail on the head at times, then completely go off on some tangent other times that makes little sense.
Kristol has apparently swallowed the Moderate Koolaid along with the ice cubes. Perhaps he’s choking. Poor guy.
It’s actually a telling statement. He refers to conservatives in the third person.
It’s tacit acknowledgement of what we’ve been saying all along - the Party isn’t conservative any more.
The irony of the remark is that he’s admonishing conservatives for not participating in a process they’ve been disenfranchised from.
It’s like having your house stolen, and then being scolded by thieves when you decide not to come to a banquet they are throwing there.
The guy’s lost a couple of steps.
Didn’t take long for Kristol to kiss up to Sulzberger.

Ill say they are not covering the HIlary News.
Kristol just wants to be invited to the cool Washington brie-and-vin parties, principles be damned.
and yet another talking head mouthpiece is heard from. My question has to be what credentials does this bozo have that makes his opinion and more sound or reasoned than mine? Answer? NONE. I don my home work and if this country is going to flush itself down the crapper I would rather have a democrap leading the way.
Aside from Krauthammer, I’ve lost all respect for the Fox “All Stars,” including Kristol.
If I was at a bar and Fred Barnes sat next to me, I’d kick his ass off the stool. Everytime he brings up McCain and amnesty, he mumbles under his breath, “a position that I agree with.” Everytime.
Whoops! Good catch, thanks!
I’m not voting for McCain. I will vote for Romney. I believe he is an honorable man who will govern as he says he will.
I already know how McCain would govern.
Wait, I did write 1994. Where are you seeing 2004?
The problem with many Conservatives is that they have adopted a purity of values attitude that none can compete with and pandering to them just simply sounds stupid.
You know when I list my top Conservative traits...
Bringing the Illegal Mexican immigrants to their just deportation and building a wall around the U.S. just wasnt on that list never has been and wasnt when I became a Reagan Conservative.. So if you want to claim Libertarian then maybe you would be happy voting for that true 100 percent no complaining Libertarian Ron Paul .. .
At least I could respect that.
Anyway these are what I want in a Leader and they are in priority order. So I will flex my vote appropriately..
1. Strong on National Defense (Fight the GWOT) Stay on Offense against the Terrorist that killed 3000 Americans on 911 so more Americans dont die.
2. Strong on Family Values (Protect the sanctity of Life and Marriage (Always not just when it is political expediant)
3. Keep my taxes low
4. Keep government spending low only approve funds for required projects no earmarks or excess spending keep budget deficits in check.
5. No nanny states, Hold people accountable for their actions dont take my tax dollars to bail others out of bad decisions.
Many here have truly lost focus... Some are lemming being led by Rush and Sean right of that cliff of inevitability called Hillary or Obama.
Republicans will lose without conservatives’ votes. There’s no doubt about that. In fact, if only 20% of all conservative Republicans decide to not vote, it would cause a landslide victory for the Dims. Might be a landslide if only 10% decided not to vote, depending on the breakout of the States those 10% come from.
Kristol and the RNC are playing with real fire. They think past performance is a reliable predictor of future profits, but this year they are wrong. The anger out here is palpable and it’s not lessening. If half the voters who are today saying they won’t vote actually follow through with the threat, it will be a walk off for the Dims.
In post #1 at the very top of this very page.
“Dont be mad that we arent calling the shots this time around... sit and think... then read... then be mad that we havent really called the shots EVER”
Not calling the shots this time around is one thing, but it seems as if conservatives are no longer wanted in the GOP.
Should McCain get the nomination and manage to win in Nov. where do conservatives go from there. The GOP leadership will rightfully claim that they can win without the conservatives, and the what?
if McCain becomes the Republican candidate, Her Thighness couldn’t have gotten a more defeatable opponent if she’d picked him herself...
Hmm, that’s weird. You’re right of course, but in the original over at NewsBusters I had it 1994!
“if McCain becomes the Republican candidate, Her Thighness couldnt have gotten a more defeatable opponent if shed picked him herself...”
That may be right, but what if Obama wins for the Dems.
I don’t think Obama can beat McCain in the general.
Our elected politicians tell us that they are representing us, but in truth, they are representing government to us. They don’t care and if John McCain is the POTUS they will kiss his ring and hang out with him to be in.
I was watching a show on Showtime about Henry VIII. It is interesting to see the people around him struggle for influence and power. One opportunistic Lord said, “If you do not get to be in the presence of the king it is like being without sunshine.” The more things change the more things stay the same.
McCain will win the nomination only by creating an alliance between moderate and liberal Republicans, independents and conservative Democrats. He can win the nomination without Republican conservatives.
But he will lose many conservative democrats, independents and some liberal Republicans to the Democrats in November when the Democrat nominee moves to the center.
McCain is already "in the center". He can't gain anything by moving left - or right!. If he moves left he loses moderate Republicans....if he moves right he loses the independents and moderate Democrats that gave him his nomination.
McCain has boxed himself in!!
I don’t think that Obama will win the ‘rat primary. The Clinton machine is not going to let that happen. As to whether McCain can defeat Obama—Obama may excite high ‘rat turn-out, but McCain will certainly suppress conservative turn-out—we may be a minority of Republican voters, but that minority may well be the margin of defeat if we don’t turn out to vote, or vote third party or write-in.
Rush slapping Fred as we speak. RUSH: Fred, you used to be one of us...
“Most were retired military and true patriots, but coming from working class backgrounds were highly anti cooperate. “
Being from Southeast Texas, I know a lot of people like that, they tend to be very conservative Democrats. I don’t think they would vote for Obama or Hillary, so they’re voting for McCain.
I need a `GTH’ button on my keyboard. A Fred Barnes article was telling conservatives to `Grow up’ the other day.
Fred's been sitting next to Mort for too long. Brit needs to move him over next to Charles Krauthammer.
