McCain Makes Headway With Conservative Wing
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2 February 2008 | ELIZABETH HOLMES

Posted on 02/02/2008 6:54:38 AM PST by shrinkermd

Mr. McCain stepped up his attempts to court the Republican right, scoring a number of high-profile endorsements this week. Yesterday, he received the support of billionaire Steve Forbes as well as former Solicitor General Theodore Olson. Mr. Olson, who served as assistant attorney general in the Reagan administration, represented President Bush in the Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore.

The picture was a bit mixed earlier in the week when Mr. McCain got near-simultaneous endorsements from moderates California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former New York Mayor and rival Rudy Giuliani, causing some consternation among party conservatives. Some prominent pundits, including Laura Ingraham and former Sen. Rick Santorum, have decried his more liberal votes and come out in favor of Mr. Romney.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter went a step further, saying that if the race came down to Mr. McCain and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, she would rather see Mrs. Clinton elected.

Polls show Mr. McCain, who won contests in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida, leading nationally by double digits, according to an average compiled by Real Clear Politics, a nonpartisan political-news Web site. The Arizona senator has about 34% of support, compared with 22% for Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who won Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada. The other contenders, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, have 20% and 5%, respectively.

...Polls, however, show it is an insurmountable barrier for many voters -- even more than Mr. McCain's age. In a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal survey1, 45% in Super Tuesday states said it would be harder for a Mormon to unite the country. That compares with only 35% who think it would be harder for someone over age 70. (Mr. McCain is 71).

We need to take the advice we’ve been giving to our African-American friends: Don’t vote for someone just because of the party affiliation. Vote for the candidate who best represents YOUR interests.

McCain ain’t it.

UNITE??? Liberals are united, all we are waiting to see is which day it will be when McCain collects enough liberal votes to make him their second tier candidate... Hillary might really stumble alll on her own and McCain can readily fill her shoes.

Does anyone else smell the distinct order of the 1970s? Gerald Ford, raising taxes, Keynesian economics and of course my all time favorite...inflation with a depreciating dollar. Ugh. And the way the GOP establishment is circling the wagon around McNut is sickening. I’m staying home in November.

Speaking of ol' Joe....

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

I don’t think anything McCain does is going to change my mind about his extremely high negative points. So far, no endorsement has reassured me that McCain stands for anything I do. Here’s hoping there’s a pleasant surprise before the convention. McCain represents himself, not any conservative Americans.

We are are on the fast track to full blown euro socialism. Nothing we are going to do about it. If this happens, I will move to Europe where they do socialism the “best”. American socialism will be a nightmare, most people haven’t been properly programmed yet. The socialists are jumping the gun by about 10 years.

The McCain whitewash is is in full swing, the party establishment is working hard to put enough lipstick on that pig to make it palatable to conservatives.

I fully expect that by convention time enough conservatives will have been convinced that McCain is the second coming of Ronald Reagan that the true McCain record will be effectively buried.

There was another election where strict conservatives refused a mixed-political-philosopy candidate. Republican George H W Bush went down to defeat in 1992. The nation was left with Bill Clinton for eight years with terrible consequences. Disastrous political decisions and judicial appointments remain for years and maybe decades.

Mrs. GBC who until now hasn't paid a whole lot of attention to politics said last night that she just doesn't think John McCain is capable of thinking rationally when under excessively stressful circumstances.

I agree. If he flies off the handle as a Senator in a simple press conference, what's he going to do when confronted with a real crisis?

I got an e-mail with concerns that the media might be trying to block out Huckabee now. Romney fans thinking yea? Hold that though a minute. I’m a Huckabee supporter but this late complaint really irritates me. Where was everyone when Duncan Hunter was banned? Fred Thompson? Not one candidate that I know of stood up at the debate and asked “where is Duncan”? If they run off Huck, guess who will be next? Hint...It won’t be McCain. It amazes me how well we have been divided and played.
