Labor Department: Non-Farm Payrolls Drop 17,000 in January; Unemployment at 4.9%
Breaking on Fox Business Web Site now.
All BushCo lies!!!! /s
employment declines, but unemployment rate also declined? Odd. Maybe some illegals are going back home.
Diebold must have calculating the numbers!
but, but, but it’s because people have given up looking for work.
Don’t worry, they’ll focus on the billions more earned by Big Oil (They didn’t notice the prices all year). /s
Greenies to come after that in 5, 4, 3, 2...
the stimulus is working! oh wait...
bumpski !!!
This will sadden the ‘RATS !!!
AP has dug through the numbers and discovered that payrolls are down fractionally - so guess what their lead is?
HA! ;)
Subprime unemployment numbers?
If I heard my unemployment was going to be extended, how hard would I look for a new job if my live in “whatever” was working??
Hmm.The first time unemployment claims rose by 69,000 last week,so you may be right.
You better believe it will. lol
Boomers starting to retire?
Today’s report included a revision to the December number. It was revised upward to 82,000 new jobs from it’s original estimate of 18,000. So we added 64,000 more jobs during December than had been initially reported. After January’s 17,000 decline reported today, we’re still 47,000 jobs higher than what we thought was the situation yesterday.

Dealing with two separate surveys. One survey reviews payroll data at businessses. The other surveys households as to their employment status. They generally move together, but at inflection points when the economy is utrning we often contradictory numbers.
Over the last 4 years, nonfarm total employment has grown by 170,000 per month on average. So relative to the past 4 years, this is showing a slowdown.
Strange and hard to believe, but far from impossible.
The government disregards so many out-of-work people, that it would well be possible. Say 17,000 lose their jobs, but a total of 25,000 quit looking or collecting unemployment or returned to school or became stay at home moms & dads or took early retirement when they couldn’t find another job.
Doesn’t seem likely but certainly not impossible.
